"shadow of collosis (dont know how popular it is...) "

Shadow of the Colossus wasn't exactly "popular"... it was more of a Cult hit Classic with a lot of underground fans of Team ICO's games, and it's still considered one of the best PS2 games.

Team ICO's games like SoTC aren't really all that mainstream, and not everyone can fully appreciate their games to the fullest, but Team ICO's games have been pretty groundbreaking/unique, and they've garnered so much respect and praise from the gaming industry and that's why I think they deserve to be in this list.

Good list, but I only like Team Ico's contributions. I recognize Gran Turismo as an awesome sim, but I've played two in my life and am not a fan of the genre.

I always thought GoW to be a bit overrated though a great accomplishment by Western devs. It'll probably stir some feelings, but I compare it a lot to Halo. Both popular games, but I don't think either did anything so spectacular in-game that they can be considered the "groundbreaking" successes they are by fans and critics.

But I still played and enjoyed both and I think Sony's recent newer efforts have been more in line with my personal tastes, if that matters. If they ever bring back Colony Wars, I'll probably burn my other platforms.

1.6 - Talking about Twisted Metal...
I think Motorstorm 3 should DEFNITELY have weapons!! >:D

The game's already crazy enough without weapons. Just imagine an off-road racing game with weapons and 4 player split-screen! With weapons, they could add other modes, such as "destruction mode" and other crazy stuff.

Lunatics unite! >:D

They should also allow 4 player split-screen in the campaign mode AND online.

I love the description of number 3. I still haven't played any of the Slys, but I've got a copy of the first game recently and very interested in playing because of Infamous (Doing my research). Funny how I ignored R&C for so many years and was more a Jak fanboy instead, approx three years ago, I realised that was a mistake and I hope I can sink my teeth into the Sly games as well.

I just feel we need all these mascots back again on the PS3 or gain some more platform mascots due to most of developers making new franchises (except Insomniac). Because its great and all with the PS3 and the developers having many mature titles and having grown up with the original audience, but theres one thing I think stopping the PS3 compared to the PS2 and that is those trinity of 3D platformers, that is what summed up Sony to me since the PSone.
Anyway, Eyepet is on the way (not a platformer, but a start for Sony to grab the tweens) and I hope this starts the flood of less mature titles, because I like maturity, but sometimes cartoon innocence and action is bliss and shifts units.

I agree.

And very similar to you, Last generation for some reason I totally ignored the Rachet and Clank franchise and I was all over every Jak and Daxter game... I just love Jak and Daxter and it's one of my all time favorite Platformers next to Crash Bandicoot, and I really want to see a Jak and Daxter PS3 game.

I remember playing the demos of the Sly games, but never bought any of them even though I enjoyed the demos, but I do plan on buying all 3 Sly games sometime this year, as well as past Rachet PS2 games.

I discovered Ratchet properly a year before I got my PS3, I was initially put off by Ratchet because of basically, the first game not having a strafe and seeming 'too kiddy' and 'chunky' compared to Jak. In the end I needed a new series to get into and played every single one of them over the summer and found myself addicted to the Ratchet series the summer before before I started Uni and interestingly discovered God of War shortly after. This then further fueled me to get my PS3 not only for Naughty Dog's 'Project Big' which turned out to be Uncharted and I got my ND and Ratchet fix in the same year, brilliant.

I really hope Jak is coming back on the PS3 too. Ratchet needs more allies in the child-friendly mascot army on the PS3, Sackboy is good, but he isn't quite Jak or Ratchet.
Jak would be more than perfect to come back and I at least know four people that would buy a PS3 for a new Jak, Killzone 2 may've been a system seller, but I'm pretty sure that the REAL system sellers is the stuff that Sony has already done in previous generations.
But hey, realistically, these type games are only going to appear when the PS3 is more affordable and is more aimed at a kids as well as serving the more mature owners, just like the prev two gens and like on the PS2 its still early years on the PS3, because the platformers didn't start flooding in until about the third year of the PS2. Still Eyepet could be the beginning of something and a sudden audience balance. It's not like adults can't play 'kids games'.

I agree with you both 100%....

When you mention games like Jak,Ratchet,Sly,I get giddy.I love stylish caricature/toon based game with a "think outside of the box" mentality.Quirky and unique...

Alot out there these days are way too generic.

Now add in the next Team ICO game and Uncharted 2 and this guy is quite the happy gamer...

Yeah I have the Sly series and its really great. If you ever get the chance, you should defintley pick it up. One of the best plots I have seen in a platformer. I also really enjoyed Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter for the ps2. Great titles.

I agree with the Franchises on the list, but not so much the order... I think they should be in this order:

5. Twisted Metal
4. Gran Turismo
3. Jak, Sly, and Rachet
2. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus
1. God of War

Twisted Metal is the longest running Playstation franchise of all time, and it definantly deserves to be in the Top 5, and I'm a die-hard fan of all the Franchises on the list except for Rachet and Sly.

Some other franchises I would add: Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot. Those 2 franchises were PS1 Classics from Insomniac and Naughty Dog.

I think SOTC is a classic,but..........

I still like ICO the best.I love the whole platforming, puzle solving aspect.

In their next game I would hope/wish they go with a more action/adventure/platfoming aspect much like ICO had. Then add in "SOTC boss segments" as you go through the game. The best of both Worlds. You get both the great gameplay aspects of ICO and the incredible boss fights of SOTC in one game.....

I just cannot wait to see something, anything, they have ASAP...

Sir Dan needs a new game set in the future ala Star Wars, similar situation as before, bought back from the dead to defeat evil overlord, perhaps a stereotypical villian like Empopror Ming, give Sir Dan a lightsabre and let him pilot a little spaceship ship, call it 'Medievil: Next Gen' that way it'll fit in with 'Medievil Reserrection' for PSP and be a little double pun to do with the future Sir Dan woke up in and being on 'next-gen' hardware.
Interestingly enough, Studio Cambridge still haven't announced or made a game for the PS3 or done anything for the PSP for a while.

BRING SIR DAN BACK!

(Never played Skull Monkeys unfortunatly.)

Gran Turismo and God of War are the big two.

From this gen alone, Uncharted seems like it could bloom into something big and Killzone stumbled but has redeemed its self.

Still need to get Jak and Sly on PS3.

12.2 - Semi-related thing...
Right. About a month ago, at uni, during a creative industries careers week this chap from SCEE came (forgot his name, check notes at some point) in who was the head art director of Sony NorthWest (UK) studios include Studio Liverpool, BigBen and Evoloution Studios...Now, he was talking about games as art for most of the lecture and how game development worked, he had a Sony Vaio and a PS3 on the desk and was showing people some of the games such as Motorstorm: Pacific Rift and Wipeout HD.
In the circumstances, it would of been really rude but I was going to ask him if since Sony bought Pysgnosis, did they also buy all the published IPs Pygnosis owned. Basically, I wanted to ask this guy and get him unoffically announcing the possibility of a Rollcage 3 (despite just being published by Psygnosis and developed by ATD), I had respect for the guy and decided not to hound him with 'gamer questions' whilst he was generally passionate about the point of games as are and the game industry. I'm still hella curious though and I had a chance, but leaving it was probably for the best.

12.3 - I just assumed that is owned by Sony since Sony bought them
Colony Wars was one of the first PS game that got me into PS. I loved that game. I still wonder why Sony never made a PS2 version.

@iceman2885. Yeah. I love space sim as well. I am still waiting for a Space Sim for this gen.

Seriously...it's not like Space sims haven't met awesome critical acceptance as well as very good sales numbers.

I could go for a good space sim this gen, I'd be willing to bet it would sell well.

If they own Lemmings, then I ASSUME that Sony own Colony Wars as they do Wipeout previously from Psygnosis. Now, I really liked Rollcage and would love to see how a Rollcage could work on PS3 with Sixaxis, the core concept would work a lot better and give even Wipeout HD a run for its money if made by STudio Liverpool.
For all we know, Sony could of got a 'Rare' deal like MS did last gen and own the rights to all of Pygnosis's old IP before becoming studio Liverpool, maybe we'll never find out.
But the case with Pygnosis publishing, NOT developing Rollcage, really makes me wonder, technically, do Sony now own Rollcage?
I missed my chance at asking, but at least I gave a guy some respect instead of taking it away.

I'm fairly certain that Sony own Colony Wars now due to actually being developed and not just published by Psygnosis, another intesting franchise everyone forgot about (not by Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool)...does anyone remember Dropship on the PS2? That franchise is ripe for a reboot.

Psygnosis....Quess what? Way back In the day, when I was a young pup,I could have worked with Psygnosis back in 1989 as my first artist/designer gig......

I could have worked on Shadow of the beast,Leander,Killing game show...But I chose the Bitmap Bros and games like Gods and magic pockets....So it turned out OK.I have moved on many times over since, but still have a warm place in my heart for those times and games...

Oh and Cajun,or anyone else, check out "Skullmonkeys",do yourself a favor,platforming/claymation at it's finest.Quirky and sylish, action and originality at their best....

17 - that's not really a top five.
you can't just lump Ratchet, Jak, and Sly in one category.

they are distinctly THREE different franchises, and fantastic ones at that.

for me, i'd say my top fave Sony franchises are:

Dark Cloud
God of War
Twisted Metal
Syphon Filter
Ratchet and Clank
Sly Cooper
Jak and Daxter
Gran Turismo
Wipeout
Killzone (1, Liberation, and 2 are very good games - even the first)
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus

new IPs that are bound for classic franchise status:

Resistance
Warhawk (old franchise, but the Online only reboot is fantastic)
Uncharted
inFamous
Motorstorm
Little Big Planet

Sony doesn't get enough credit for the quality of their first and second party offerings, while other companies get heaps of praise thrown on them for really only having a very small number of classic franchises (Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, Microsoft has Halo and, well, Halo - Gears is owned by Epic Games). Sony has quality and quantity titles.

i was at work today, and one my co-workers actually said that he hates first party games in general, because they aren't good. my brain nearly exploded. to each his own, but still...

anyway, Sony is doing what they do best, and that's allowing their first party devs the freedom to explore new avenues and stretch their creative muscle.

so far Naughty Dog, Insomniac, and Sucker Punch have been able to pursue different game types (and pave the way for their classic franchises to be reborn on the PS3), with more studios soon to be doing the same (ie, Zipper with MAG, although that's not much of a departure from their niche.

we haven't seen the end of Heavenly Sword. the first was a fantastic game that was utterly MURDERED by jaded, nitpicking, immature fanboys.

considering that the game has sold nearly 1 million units worldwide, you'd think that a sequel could happen at some point in the future. a surprise announcement of Heavenly Sword 2 at E3 this year would be awesome.

too bad Ninja Theory has moved on to other things.
