Sony On Developing for an Open PS2 Platform

Kiev, Ukraine – PlayStation development took center stage at Casual Connect when Sony Europe's developer relations manager George Bain addressed an audience of Eastern European developers.

The PlayStation 2 has sold 131.3 million units to date, he said. The software sales for that platform have been over 1.4 billion.

The PlayStation Portable has sold 41.3 million units. Software sales have been 169 million.

And as of June 30th, the PlayStation 3 has sold 14.4 million units, with software sales of 94 million.

he most important information Bain had for his audience was news that, in Europe, the PlayStation 2 "is effectively an open platform," adding, "You no longer have to submit a game for content approval." He used examples from Russia and Indian developers, saying they can "create low-development cost titles and release them in their market."

Without the need of a licensed publisher, it's a direct relationship between a developer and Sony.

I agree with that, Blu-ray beating HD-DVD was just the first step. But right now, it seems that cheaper blu-ray players are also going against the PS3. Price right now is a big issue for Sony, I really hope they give a $50 price drop or make a bigger bundle.

4 - I love this idea
I'm sure for the time being it's only for the region that they live, but SONY can pick up new games and new developers this way.
I'm looking forward to see Russian or Indian developers coming up with fresh ideas.

What I wish would happen is that Sony would release a set of API's that anyone could use to develop for the platform (I know I'll get disagrees) like Microsoft did with XNA. Except that the platform should truly be open so that you could hand a DVD to a friend and they could play your game, too.

7 - based on those numbers
the PS3 attach rate is 6.5 as of June 30th. I thought i remembered reading a recent news story about the attach rate being around just under 5. Might be mistaken, but shouldn't a console's attach rate go up rather than down as time goes?

i think your right ...

and as far as companys go Sony is Destryong all others in History of these industry of ours ...

even tho 360 is doing nice right now .. is kinda of amasing how much sony has manage to sell a 400 dollar console.. an we all know that with time the price is gona go down and with that sales will go up and with the news out of Japan that Blue Ray is going up as hell there sonys ps3 is gona have a long and good life..

o well good that some smal DEVs are gona get their shot at making PS2 games.. and who knows if sony sees something REALLY good out of it they will put their money in to it and Get some kick ass new groups to make PS3 games

Does this affect the localization of games certain regions didn't get (i.e. many jrpgs that never came to the U.S.)?
