PS3 MGS4 80gb Bundle sells thousands in Minutes, Kills Amazon in the process

Well, good job folks. We told you that amazon.com would sell the Metal Gear Solid 4 80GB bundle today. And you all listened. Thousands of you swarmed the site, got rid of their inventory in seven minutes, and best of all -- you killed amazon.com.

Demand for the Metal Gear bundle was so high, that the popular online retailer simply couldn't handle the traffic. If this is the fervor in just one store, imagine how well the bundles are going to sell when they release nationwide next Thursday.

I guess I was wrong about the ps3's sales afterall. I'm sorry to everyone who argued the fact with me. I'm impressed but this is just Amazon lets see how it fairs in stores where it really matters. I say this cause some stores aren't even doing mgs4 preorders, like Blockbuster for instance.

Shame too, they did Gta4 but not mgs4?

1.6 - uhhhh
It released an limited edition system based on a series that has a strong, large, and dedicated fanbase early.

Should I be surprised by the fact that it sold well or something?

edit: sorry for the negativity, but it's just such an obvious thing it shouldn't be news. It reminds me of the onion.

edit2: the halo3 bundle didn't come with the game, wasn't released early, didn't come with the game, was a lot uglier than the system on its own, and, oh yea, DIDN'T COME WITH THE GAME. It also didn't come with a superior version of the system itself.

^^

i dunno, should you?
did Halo 3 bundle crash any servers?
ore even GTA4 bundles?
just wondering since they are teh huge!

i'm still skeptical that this bundle would do this to a site such as Amazon, but who knows, it's probable.

1.9 - This is funny...
If any of you seriously think that a PS3 bundle release took down Amazon.com, you will have another thing coming.

Where is this articles references and sources? They list nothing. Amazon.com hasn't said anything (okay, so I guess that will give you a slimmer of hope that this is true). Reputable news sources (PC World, MarketWatch, CNN, etc) all have said that inquiries to Amazon.com have not been returned.

This story is lame, provides no proof and it just allows you all to sit there and think something is true when it's not.

edit - Here's the most I could find from an Amazon spokesperson:

I noticed the outage on Amazon this afternoon which lasted several seconds. I doubt it had little to do with the PS3 sales. Amazon is a huge site and can withstand the strongest of Christmas sales and lightening deals on a daily basis.

I am glad to see them selling so well but I work on data networks all day... plus it happened at like 3pm or so.

1.13 - Circuit City and Gamestop Preorder
Circuit city has had a preorder bundle for two weeks and still list "limited quantities". I'll admit it's on the main ps 3 page and not listed as a hardware option. Glad to see some units moving

Holy Crap! I have COMPLETELY understimated the selling power of Metal Gear Solid.

There isn't even anything specialy about this PS3 is there? It's not gun metal. Why not just get a ps3 and mgs4?

because the 80gig is backward compatible with dual shock 3 controller.

Also expect GTA sales to rise as well in the coming months as install base of PS3 increase, the life time total of GTA could possibly surpass that of the 360. When that happen, do not be surprised...You heard it from me first. There are alot of semi-GTA fans who are waiting this bundle.

2.3 - It's a steal cuz it's almost basically
as good as a real price drop at $499 including game, dual shock, 80gigs, with backwards compatibility... and I hear depending on where you get it, PAIN comes along with it.

My Gamestop is being all coy about how they are gonna handle selling it. >Yeah unfortunately they're my only option close enough< they want me to call on MGS4 release night to see if they even have any; but they aren't saying whether or not they'll sell the MGS4bundle starting midnight... hell, they proly don't even "KNOW" how they're really handling anything anyways...

Yeah, I agree. It takes a lot more than a couple thousand users to bow down a huge website like Amazon. I'm sure Youtube has at least 1 million+ users worldwide at any given moment.

Probably server maintenance or something else. Don't jump the gun.

Only the video game section isn't working now.

So I guess a mixture of the influx of the PS3 Gun Metal, mixed with all of the Wii buyers will ahve crashed it.

now you are not thinking things through. several thousand ps3s sold but they likely had 20,000 or more people beating the site all at one time. remember, the bulk of the network problems are not generated by the people that got through and made a purchase.

5.5 - Still...
....it speaks volumes about how good this bundle is selling. Even if the servers didn't crash (and I personally think we're overestimating powers of some servers. In my experience, even big servers can have crashes from things like this. Depends on how they went about accessing the site and at what time they did, and if they try to get on at the exact same time), it's still selling out, which means that SOMEONE is buying them.

Pwned will be if when the server comes back they still have MGS4 Bundle on Stock. ^^

I doubt they do. Because that's a hell of a deal. But is hard to think that MGS4 crash Amazon, when GTA4 couldn't. ^^ Snake > Niko

But on topic....we knew this would happen...MGS4 is the man with the plan!

6 - This is awesome....
I know many gamers who are buying this bundle as there first PS3. All I want to know is how many will be available from now until the end of June. I have no doubt they will sell every one of them.

Metal Gear Solid 4 "Welcome Boxes" are taking over amazon japan. They get to choose from white, black, and silver. As well as Gun Metal. There are 6 PS3 sku's in the top 100 on amazon japan. With the MGS4 game at number one.

dont blow it out of meaning. the people that are buying the game are the people whose ps3 stopped working and a few xbox customers, not the loyal ones just the ones who like gaming. its good for the industry. that great for konami.

6.3 - @3sexty....man please...
I don't care how many were available to buy....I am concerned with how many were in DEMAND. PS3 is about to close the gap.

There could have been 600,000 people ready to buy for all you know. There are 42 million ps2's in North America. I went to the page just to see and do the MC HAMMER when it sold out. It crashed as soon as I clicked at 1:05 EST.

I am not a depressed person, so sorry for only looking at this awesome news as....u know......awesome?
