Why the Sega Saturn Needs to Be Represented on the Virtual Console

JMcEvoy2006 writes:

"While it won't make many lists for the greatest home consoles, the Sega Saturn holds a special place in gaming history. Though it was obliterated by the PlayStation, it was the second most successful console of the era and had some classic titles. As such, these titles need to be released on the VC."

1.1 - I would love.....
to play Panzar Dragoon Saga on any of the major 3 consoles.

I missed out on many Sega Saturn games, as at the time like many people, was playing on the PlayStation.

PD Saga, Guardian Heroes and Burning Rangers are the ones I'd love to play.

I would buy a Saturn and the games of Ebay, but although the console can go for around £10-£20, a copy of PD Saga could cost around £150-£200, with GH and BR around £80-£100. Way to much!

1.4 - All three on all three would be nicer
But I think in reality the Wii is only technically capable of emulating Genesis. If they recoded Saturn and DC games they might work ok, but as VC (under emulation) I doubt it can happen. Saturn is actually MORE complicated to emulate than Dreamcast and needs a hefty PC to run games smoothly (SFF being the best emu out ATM). Both DC and Satrun could be emulated on Xbox 360 and PS3 I recon. Would be nice to see a Saturn collection similar to the recently released Genesis collection. HD and tropies/achievements, great stuff!!

I wish more people would have supported Sega throughout the years, who knows if they did maybe we would have the DreamCast 2 right now. Then again since sega has become a dev/publisher they have brought out many games for all consoles that i really enjoy. VC and Yakuza being some of my favs

Maybe if Sega hadnt released a trinity of total crap hardware in between the mega drive and the dreamcast then they would have had that support ?

9 - For sure
I have a Saturn. And I have about 65 games for it. Iron Storm was pretty awesome. A 2d turn based WW2 strategy game.

Hopefully one of the consoles will pick up these games for download.

10 - Good luck
The Wii doesn't have anywhere near the power required for a Sega Saturn emulator. Do you have any idea how damn complex that thing is? The thing had several sets of ram ALL at different speeds, two processors for the cpu itself, a processor for the GPU which was a god damn mess by adding on 3d at the very last minute, a processor for the sound processor itself "It's superior to the playstation soundchip surprisingly" and the fact that it's still not perfect on the PC and requires one hell of a processor to run it at good speed is telling. For it's time it was powerful, but it's incredibly hard to emulate due to being something akin to the PS3 cell in overall complexity.

This will never happen for one obvious thing: Storage.

Saturn's games came on CDs. CD games were upwards to 650MBs in size. Of course many are much smaller but they still take a heavy toll on the Wii's measly 250MBs of internal flash memory. It even takes a toll on those 2GB SD cards.
Just look at some downlodable PS1 games from the PSN. Any given game can weight 300MBs while the big mammoths like MGS1 and FFVII weight for a whopping 800mb and 1.3GBs respectively.

Sega Saturn on the Wii's VC will NEVER happen.

I really enjoyed the Panzer Dragoon games and also loved a game called Lunacy. I still have my Saturn and games but maybe checking out some titles I may have missed would be cool.

Personally, I say that Radiant Silvergun alone would be more than enough to justify bringing the Saturn to the current-generation consoles.

Saturn is a masterpiece console. when you want the best shmups and the best 2d fighters saturn is the place to be. I love my sega saturn. House of the dead, radiant silvergun, fighting vipers, shinobi legions, xmen vs streetfighter, nights into dreams, rainbow cotton, sega rally.

20 - My Saturn
Collection dwindled a bit over the years for various reasons. Somehow though I still have Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Virtual On, Import versions of Xmen vs Street Fighter, Fighters Megamix, King of Fighters 94, Panzer Dragoon, and some other titles. Loved playing Dark Savior. Game was tedious at times, but fun exploration. I wanted to dig out ThunderForce 4 the other day. May still do that...Great article guys.

Both the SATURN and the DREAMCAST needs to be on the Virtual Console. It's already been proven that these sort of games can be compressed and emulated (Turbo Grafx CD games are already available.), and still look like the original. There are way too many exclusive games on those systems that haven't seen the light of day in a long time.
