Unlockables are outdated, says Tekken chief
58
The age-old tradition of featuring unlockable characters in fighting games is "outdated" and "no longer useful," according to Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada.
All 40 characters will all be available from the start of Tekken 6.

Unlocking characters is more of an annoyance then real "fun", but its always been an annoyance!
Paying to unlock ANYTHING that already exists on the disk should be ILLEGAL. You shouldn't be able to buy a product (Remember you now OWN the disk) and have to pay more to unlock additional content on that very disk you own. Thats straight up fraud and there should be laws against it.

I'm ambivalent because for one, I'm used to unlocking characters and it adds some replay value. On the other hand, if that frees the devs up to make something a bit more worthwhile to unlock, I don't mind.
This is Namco we're talking about and their two big fighters (Soul Calibur and Tekken) have always had ambitious features besides unlocking characters. T5 came with 4 full unlockable games, people. While I don't know if they can match that with T6 (the can definitely try on the blu-ray edition because of the space), I don't think they're going to screw us on replay value.
DLC on the other hand... It's a wait and see.

Generally speaking with software you own nothing and is only given a license to use the software. Ever read the eula of any software you buy?
This is no different than buying Windows Vista and have all versions on the same disc. You don't get all of them do you?
Now I do detest DLC, especially the kind that normally would be free or included. However, consumers aren't entitled to anything and can vote with their wallets. Apparently the masses have spoken....

1.7 - "All 40 characters will all be available from the start of Tekken 6"
You won't be paying for anyone. Unless there's actually more than 40 characters, and the extras are already on the disc waiting for you to pay for DLC. <_<
Anyways, it will be like Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection HD for PS3. All characters unlocked. The only thing you need to do is play the game a lot to get money to buy outfits.
But I still like the old way of unlocking characters, it actually forces you to use all the characters. Just look at Tekken 3 for example. It was so successful because of all the different modes and characters and outfits you could unlock!
Developers are making unnecessary changes to games because they think "times are changing". I guess that's why modern games don't have the same charm as those older classic games.

I actually don't mind unlocking characters, at least it gives you the incentive to fight with different characters(SPAM if you want) and get stuff.
I remember playing Soul Caliber 2 and getting all the characters and doing the missions to get the items. This is all replay value.

1.12 - They are such LIARS
It pisses me off when devs try to make up fake excuses as to why they charge for new characters. We ALL know they're gonna release more through DLC and we all know it was their plan from the start.
SCIV got away with charging $5 for a character that was %100 on disc and they've lead the trend of what going to keep happening this gen. We'll praise free DLC even though it actually SHOULD be free anyways.
Naruto Ninja storm is the only game to release a bunch of free characters, but they're only support characters and Naruto Ninja Storm has no online fighting/competitive mode.
Anyways, having all the characters unlocked from the go is fine and welcomed because it leaves me with more time to play online and prevents the occurrence of them possibly charing to unlock everything, another thing SCIV that use to be done by cheat codes

Fighting games usally have high replay value anyway, but nothing is more satifying then unlocking stuff. Look at Street fighter IV there are nine that need unlocking. The boss require you playing with everyone. Characters that you know you will rarely play with. Useing online play as an excuse, the player can't get mad at the other player for unlocking something they could have unlocked themselves.

Might as well cancel my pre-order then. T5:DR (PS3 version) got old fast because everyone was unlocked from the start. Online was garbage - you couldn't play a match without someone quiting half-way through because they were losing.
To bad everyone will lap up the DLC, though. Just look at SF4.

If you play alone and have no friends it gets old fast. I played probably like 4k+ rounds of Tekkan5 DR and the online isnt that bad it has the best of any fighting game I played and they keep improving it and tweaking it. I am very confident that 6 will be worth while, although some unlocks would be nice for SP mode.

Hmm from what i've seen myself , and read , T5 DR is easily one of the worst online experience . between the lag , the blocked regions ....
besides imo , unlockables or not , fighting games are quickly boring if alone , as it should be , it's by essence a multiplayer kind of game .
At most you would play dress up in SC as an ex , or mini games like all SC's modes , but that too burn outs quickly .

8 - As a long-time Tekken fan...
...I think this guy is talking out his ass! If it wasn't for having to unlock characters in past Tekken's, there would be MANY characters I wouldn't be able to play with today! Having to learn a character you wouldn't normally use to unlock another character is what made me get good at the game. The other, and most important reason, is that it also teaches you how to defend against that particular character as you need to know some of his attacks to go through the game with.
To be honest, fighting games are always best when played locally as there is no lag and your opponent can't quit halfway through.....unless he wants to get punched in the head in real life :)
The main reason why I'm not buying Marvel vs Capcom 2 is for this very thing. Everything is already unlocked so there's really only online to play through (as there's also no individual endings either)

setting up the easy mode with one round and abusing one single move against a obviously stupid AI (given the level chosen or maybe regardless of it) is hardly a teaching and learning experience ...
And this is precisely what many people actually do with those modes . Not some dreamy and rosy "lets use this opportunity to learn everyone properly" .
Besides imo learning with CPU is a big nono in some games , especially Tekken . You pick up bad habits and reactions because of the cpu's own quirks , that could be troublesome to get ride of for a while .

8.2 - Well...
...if people want to choose easy mode with one round, then of course they won't learn anything. I've never done that as I don't see the point personally.
I totally disagree with your last point. I challenge any newbie to finish Dark Resurrection on ultra hard mode by just button bashing! The CPU blocks practically everything and while some people thinks thats bad, I think it did me a lot of good.
Since the CPU turns into a blocking god, it made me learn about attacking when there's an opening, reversing reversals (chicken), stopping multi part throws, learning character juggles and how to avoid the juggle starters distancing and, most importantly, distancing.
The problem with online is that you can only learn from playing very good players. If they're crap, you probably won't learn much or if there's constant lag. Like I said above, the best way to play Tekken is locally if possible.
Back on topic, I rather the old days were I could brag to my friends "Look at my shiny new character that I unlocked" (Bryan in this example in Tekken 3) than theses days where it's "Hey look at the achievement/trophy I unlocked" which has no real value whatsoever.

Well that what many of us do unfortunately . in my case it's a first reflex , since i want to play locally (and then online) as quickly as possible . Then later i'll deal with enjoying (or not) the story .
The funny thing is , the game fully unlocked changes nothing for you guys , besides some pychological switch, that imo doesnt even exist anyway , since you'll complete any fighting games you own regardless , and even got this generation stuff like trophies and achievements as incentives .
While instead pre-unlocked characters indeed offer actual and contretes advantages , like immediate access to your characters for matches against people , locally or online ... wich is supposed to be the main interest of the game .
Ps : I never mentioned buttons mashing . Tekken's CPU is on god mode on hard , but hell it's often the case with most well done game .
Doesnt change the fact imo that whatever the games , they still got attitudes and quirks that you'll read after a while , maybe too much ...
readings and play habits that could be detrimental imo against real players .
Anyway i guess we'll just diesagree on this , but could agree that playing against people locally is always better .
PS2 : As for braggings rights sorry but meh :p . Until the 00's those games all featured cheats codes , or it was easy to trades saves with memory cards . not to mention that my crowd would ridicule anyone acting as if it was that hard to unlock characters :p

Well I suppose it depends on the people you play with (regarding unlocking characters with cheats) I personally didn't know anyone in my old 'Tekken group' who used cheats to unlock characters, they'd be dissed lol.
But anyway, for me story, endings , cutscenes etc is what actually makes me play with every single character in fighting games. In the original Tekken, I had to play with every single character to see their ending and unlock their counterpart character. That gave me value for money and was a great incentive. I can bet you my house that if all those characters were unlocked from the get go and there was no story, I would have no incentive to play with everyone. I know this from the fact that to this day, I haven't played with all the characters in MVC2 and the Virtual Fighter series and probably never will.
Especially in this day and age, I look for value when forking out £40 on a game. If it's already a solid game and has extras to keep me interested, all the better. Namco knows this to some extent or they wouldn't bother with their extravagant endings to unlock and all those bonus modes.

I've been a fan of fighters for ages. I can't believe how out of it some dev's are with what fans want. This will definitely cut down on replay value in T6. Though I guess I'll still beat the game with each character to see their individual endings. That is if endings aren't "outdated".

See you admit it yourself , you'll play it regardless , for endings or other reasons . no need to force the same things down others throat .
PS : i also always do play the story mode completely , i just want to do it on my own wish for the good reasons .
Not when i bought a game , unwrap it , need a character but cant use immediately online or in multi because "hey lets make you jump through hoops so you could learn !! even if you played all previous games of the series"

What some of you guys calls a reason to play the story is just a chore for many of us .
The ones among you who enjoy doing story/arcade modes would do so on their own anyway . trophies/achievement would be your reason enough to inflict yourself hours of bad attempt of storylines in what is basically a multiplayer game .
The rest of us would just put the game on easy mode with one round , and basically cheat .
i've yet to hear a good reason why i should be playing characters like rose to finally be able to unlock gouken , after unlocking her and others ...
There is also always the trivial issue or morons calling characters unlockables/bosses "overpowered" . people that feel that playing with a gouken is "cheating coz its a secret char" , and yet would get torn appart easily with it in their hands , given his glaring flaws and weaknesses .
Oh and finally , there is always the fun , this particular generation , to play a fighting game , unlock everything , and not always be able to copy saves . So here you go at friends house , at people without the game , for a session of fun , and instead you're stuck with a limited range of characters , unless you waste time unlocking them again ...
PS : And wtf with bringing up dlcs ? How are both issues related or mutually exclusives anyway ? Capcom released a street fighter 4 with unlockables colors and instead dlc costumes for christ sakes ...

I think that weapons/abilities in competitive fps games and characters in fighting games should all be unlocked from the start.
I also think that all difficulty modes should be available from the start.
The only stuff that should be unlockable is skins, levels, hidden endings/movies and trophies/achievements.

15 - Doesn't make a difference
I don't think having the characters already unlocked will make the game any less fun. Chances are you'd probably want to complete the game with every character to get all the endings, and you usual unlock different characters by completing the game with another character. Therefore there's no difference whether or not the characters are already unlocked if your still planning to complete the game with every character.

16 - Good
The worst thing you can do is unlockable characters on a fighting game. I play Baek and I don't like the rest of the cast. I would hate to have to put it on 1 round 30 seconds and mash my way with characters I don't care about just so I can unlock my character of choice.
On top of that I have to unlock ALL the characters in case I throw a tournament and someone uses a locked characters. Bosses should never be unlocked unless they are balanced or tested.
Example KLIFF in GGXX and old ROBO KY
