MGS4 Storyline Is A Measuring Stick, Not A Detriment

The cardinal sin of fiction is to "tell" rather than "show," and there's a great deal too much "telling" going on in MGS4. In this way, it stumbles a bit and falls from the ranks of "professional" to "amateur with raw talent."

I'm a sucker for good stories. It's the number 1 thing I look for in a game unless I am just looking for a fun multiplayer game. Graphic is the last thing I usually look at.

MGS series has one of the best stories. It's sad how some can't wrap their mind around a simple conspiracy theories/real life government actions.

I never realised how deep metal gear's story line was until i played mgs2. If you download the mgs database on ps3, you'll see how deep it is. It has the best story line in gaming. And if people can't understand it and say its written poorly...COUGH...CNET.....COUG H..... then go play gears of war. Thats probably more on their brain level

2 - Isn't it ironic
The people that complain most about MGS's story are non-Ps3 owners?

Wonder if it has to do with their comprehension skills.

2.1 - whats funnier, is that xfans wnated the game on their system so much, that it was all they posted here on n4g.
for a game that they didnt want, they sure posted alot of stories about it.

In direct comparison, i wonder why ps3 owners dont SWEAT any of the 360 exclusives....oh wait, its because they are also on pc.

I love my bluray player, for some reason my bluray player has the best games this gen. With more to come XD

I agree everybody (mostly 360 fanboys who have never played the game) complains about mgs4 being more of movie than a game. But even if you took away all the cutscenes it still has more gameplay than gears, halo, cod4, and most other big name titles. ontop of that mgs4 has the best storyline of this generation and Kojima managed to tie together 20 years of mgs history. I enjoyed every cutscenes even the less entertaining ones, because they where all done with such perfection.

No matter what anyone says mgs4 will remain my favorite video game of this generation until somebody tops it, which I don't think they will. IMO the only games that have ever topped a mgs game is the next mgs game.

4 - according to CNET.COM
A great story is see an alien and shoot it. That basically it.

I for one like my story with a lot of back story, characters and their personality, environment, and something to disturb the order of the world. MGS does that and more.

5 - Too bad CNET
Wasn't intelligent enough to comprehend the game. It was easy to follow, and the story was absolutely incredible in both scope and delivery.

While I'm not going to read the article, I can say that there are things that could have been done to improve the MGS story. The story is very deep and it is a good story, however some of the story is redundant and some things are just not needed. The last epilouge of MGS4 was not needed in my opinion, they should've just ended it on the gunshot. But most people do not expect the level of storytelling from games that exists in the MGS universe so they think it's convoluted. It is, but, then again, so was X-Files.
