Neocrisis: Sixaxis: The Good, The Bad, The Future

Neocrisis: When Sony introduced the Sixaxis controller a lot of people thought that perhaps they were copying Nintendo. Regardless of if this is true or not we now have Sixaxis in our PS3 controllers and it got me thinking what the future will be for Sixaxis. So we will discuss the good, the bad and the future of Sixaxis.

I strongly disagree. Sixaxis is just another additional control on the PS controller, you know like back when clicking L3 and R3 in on the PSone in Ape Escape?
Well, Sixaxis is like that, don't think of Sixaxis AS THE CONTROLLER, think of Sixaxis as PART OF THE CONTROLLER.

Think the possibilities for game developers now. There are 14 buttons availble on the PS3's controller (Including seperate D-Pad buttons, excluding Start & Select) and has been since the Dual Shock, games such as God of War has used every single button in multiple combinations.
The Sixaxis also adds six additional control methods, one for each tilted direction. in total that means that without combinations of buttons pressed, developers can choose 20 individual control methods for context in a game. I think that upcoming games such as God of War III and Heavy Rain will prove many Sixaxis doubters wrong.

Besides games such as Flow, Flower, Warhawk and the Sixaxis controlled parts of Ratchet and Clank: Future keeps the Sixaxis very 'useful' to the PS3. So keep it, I say.

It feels so good gliding as Ratchet with Sixaxis, it's awesome wrestling and pulling souls in Folklore and it's absolutely amazing guiding arrows in Heavenly Sword. Placing mines in Killzone is quite an interesting implementation (turn/release), although it does feel a bit gimmicky compared to those I just mentioned.

I think it needs some time getting used to. I remember almost vomiting when I first used a mouse in Wolfenstein.

Oh man, you just reminded me of that again. Jeez, I mainly remembered falling from the sky, cutting through rock, the chopper and the mini hurricanes. Gliding was stunning, wow, I should really play that section again, that was AMAZING.

way better than Wii Bowling.... it takes "two needed" motions to bowl at best, back then forward...

wii is just a flick of the risk...

no offense, wii is fun...

2 - sixaxis is good when done in small doses
the godfather was a good example of this. throwing people off of roofs or into pizza ovens by shoving your controler forward or choking somone then getting them to their feet is also cool. small psn games are also good with the sixaxis like the sking or skydiving games also flower. but i can go wrong like the case with lair. do it right and it can be very fun, do it wrong and i can kill your game

:)

Folklore was the first game I played that used the Sixaxis and it really added to the game. I thought it was so inventive to use phyiscal actions to defeat enemies and some of the bosses were incredibly fun because of the Sixaxis.

When it comes to games like Killzone 2 I found myself not even noticing I was using the Sixaxis so that means it was done well and that's what the devs should be aiming for. As Cajun said you need to think of Sixaxis as just another method of control and if done right it can add a ton to the experience.

4 - A gimmick
That is how the motion control was implemented with the Ps3.

If Sony knew what Nintendo was planning to do with the Wii controller, then it should have done the same with the Ps3 controller.

It's obvious a controller in each hand with motion control and/or rumble is the future. This gets the gamer more involved with the game.

Also, this wii-mote-like controller is ideal for FPS for fast aiming/looking/targeting - nearly as fast as a mouse.

C'mon Sony and just bring us the Play-mote already.
