Take-Two Reports PS3 Biggest Revenue Generator

Kotaku writes: Sales were up at Take-Two Interactive, thanks to sales of games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Midnight Club: Los Angeles, but the publisher saw losses also increase to the tune of $15 million.

The company pointed to two other titles, NBA 2K9 and Carnival Games as leaders for the quarter, laying out its fiscal 2009 game plan. That includes two batches of Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable episodes due by October 31, 2009, one of which has already been announced and dated. The company boasted that more than 3 million games in the Carnival Games series have been shipped.

Take-Two list the PlayStation 3 as its biggest revenue generator on the publishing side, with 35% of the quarterly take. That beats out the Xbox 360, which brought in 28% of its publishing dollars, and the Wii, at 11%.

For the entire fiscal year, Take-Two brought in $1.5375 billion in revenue, with $97.1 million in net revenue. That's much better than the company's 2007, when it raked in $981.8 million, resulting in a loss of over $138 million.

EA and Ubisoft have also reported that they're making more money from the PS3 but how? Microsoft lying about their total hardware sales again, I guess. That or every refurbished Xbox 360 that goes out whenever they need to repair the RROD counts as sold to retailers (or consumers).

1.2 - "Microsoft lying about their total hardware sales again,"
They've always been reporting the shipped number of consoles, that's why the actual difference between Ps3 and 360 software numbers in the US has been shrinking and shrinking even with Microsoft reporting more hardware "sales"

More people own 360's = More software will be purchased for that platform. Or so I thought until EA and Ubisoft reported otherwise.

This is a very confusing... the 360 has more user base and according to NPD sells the most games.. So kinda weird that developers are making more money on the PS3 than on the 360.

NPD only covers American hardware / software sales. Maybe when you stop believing that America is the only country in the world this will all become easier for you to understand.

1.15 - Misleading
360 sold is misleading.

a gamer - bought system twice (becoz RROD) - still 1 gamer for developer. But M$ counts as new gamer. 3 years warranty is up. So from now on 360 sold will be misleading to developer.

Maybe it's because M'soft take a bigger revenue cut.

John Carmack said they weren't going to ship rage on 3 DVDs because M'soft would take too much of their money.

Maybe devs don't have to sell as many copies of their games on PS3 to make their money back.

Just a suggestion ... I may well be completely wrong. :S

1.21 - This is what brings third party developers to the systems.
When they know they can make money with it and sell games they know to make more of them for the system. What's more important is that the PS3 has a smaller install base and yet brings in more money for big companies like this. Kudos Sony for making a platform like the PS3 that is appealing to those interested in making money and great games.

I still can't figure out with that 8:1 attach rate the 360 has, what publishers games they are attaching to. MS must be embellishing their sales figures. This is why they don't publish hard sales figures like Sony does.

Jtucker is right thou.

To put things simple. The Game companies (Sony, Nintendo) charge a fee to other companies for every game sold on their consoles.

Sony charges the cheapest fee, lets say 3-4$ from every game sold. While Microsoft and Nintendo (Definately Nintendo) charge around 8-10$ (This are just estimates don't respond)

Sony's always had the cheapest fee and ironcally makes its losses from this

I thought I was the only one. I could never figure out how they do those calculation. Those attachment rate does not seem to reflect in these reportings on revenue at all.
Or maybe is because 360 games drop in price a lot quicker than PS3?
Whatever the reason may be, those attachment rating are bs. It proves nothing in the end.

1.31 - Use your brain, guys
The reason PS3 is making more revenue for 360 is because PS3 game sales in Europe beat 360 game sales. That "million" lead is not in all europe, it's basically just UK. Since the dollar is very weak against the Euro and GBP in comparison, a game sale in Europe is much better than a game sale in America.

So much for America being "the most important territory in the console war", lol. Tables are turning and the only thing Xbox fanboys can do is spread FUD and negative articles surrounding Sony and PS3, but if that didn't help the Dreamcast against PS2, it'll barely help the 360 against PS3, if it does.

Yeah a game is 60 bucks here. the last time i went to UK i thought everything was a reasonable price until i change my currency to pounds. Damn it is a big difference. A sale in Europe is worth more than a sale in the US. With the current exchange rate the typical price for a new game is about 90$ here (Norway) now. Don't know what games cost in the US, but I imagine it's alot less than that.

2 - First EA, then Konami, now Take-Two
Playstation 3 is healthier than ever and 2008 is indeed the year of PS3. PS3 owners are buying more software across all publishers, 360 owners are not buying enough games period. The RROD is affecting 360 gamers purchases after all and it seems it's why this vicious Sony attack is occuring: to cover it up.

2.1 - My point is PS3 owners spread the love (ie: money) across all game publishers....
360 owners buy more of the same games, probably exclusive to their console. You can't spin these facts reported by Take-Two. I guess Ubisoft will be next.

And of course your point is completely wrong konami released a single game on the 360 its no surprised that they made more on the ps3. Especially given that mgs4 is only on the ps3. Take-Two also released more games on the ps3 this year. Last year they released more on the 360 and big surprise last year they made more on the 360. As for EA they release trash so I guess that just means ps3 owners have poor taste in games
