Guitar Hero 4 Details and Pictures

It seems the next game in the legendary franchise, Guitar Hero, will take a step towards the Rock Band style of playing, but it also seems they are taking it a step further than what Harmonix had done. There will be the ability to create and play your own songs and there will be the ability to create and customize your own character and this time around you will also be able to create your own guitar. You can look at these amazing pictures from the latest GameInformer magazine on www.psnathome.com

Actually Activision and Red Octane had filed patents on a "band" and "drum" (and other variations) spin-off names of the guitar hero prior to Harmonix releasing "Rock Band".

I guess with Rock Band being the hit that it was it forced them to actually try to do something with those patents.

Actually Harmonix wanted to make Drum Hero when they were working with Red Octane, Activision did the patent on Drum Villain months after that.

2 - play your own songs!
"There will be the ability to create and play your own songs"
This is what I've been waiting for! Hopefully there will be some high-quality customizable drum kits and sounds you can use.

Hack your 360 and use the tools at scorehero.com - and you can already do any song you like. It takes ages to do a good note layout of course, but its worth it!
I have 4 hacked guitar hero titles on the 360.... only one I made myself.

What will make it awesome is if you can download the actual note list for the track you want instead of having to manually do it yourself.

I can see the PS3 and maybe the Wii version being able to do that due to the way they are programmed, but with the X360 being quite tight in handling mods and custom add-ons (hence why Unreal T 3 got delayed), it may not be an option.

That or something built in the game that works it out, but somehow I think that will be quite difficult and inaccurate if incorpareted.

We'll have to wait and see, but it sounds to good to be true at the moment, especially as Activision and Red Octane will be losing out on the cash of DLC of tracks.

Oh, and hopefully they'll be some sort of unoffical add-on for the Rock Band drums to have the extra pads at the top. You can do wonderful stuff with programable USB ports nowadays.

3 - I won't be buying any more peripherals
They need to make all these intstrument "controllers" universally compatible to their particular console for all these rhythm games (if not total univerality). Doesn't look like they will cuz the RB drums have the bass pedal ORANGE but the GH4 has the right-side "cymbal" colored ORANGE.

That's great they're giving players the tools to make their own songs but that doesn't catch my interest as it sounds closer to homework rather than fun to me ...but that's totally IMHO and I'd expect people to be pretty stoked for that. I wonder just how intricate the music you make can/will be.

So IF I buy GH4, I'll buy it used w/o peripherals...especially since GH3 was very disappointing for me.

Ugh... I was an early, rabid GH fan - after GH2 everything has been downhill. GH4 looks to be more of the same. They should be trying to set themselves apart from Rock Band not playing catch up. They should be revamping the guitar controller to make the game more compelling not making incompatible knockoff controllers for a game everyone already has.

Create a song is an interesting ploy for the hardcore crowd, but it will fall flat with the mainstream. Am I really going to give a crap about some random instrumentals made by whomever? Probably not. It would actually be cool if you could program real songs and share them with the community - if they had a radio-like royalty structure, but that would be too much hard work. They just want to say "hey we've got the same stuff as Rock Band and more!" and cash in.

Thanks for ruining a great franchise Activision.

4.1 - GH is the MegaMan of rhythm games
I agree, the honeymoon is most definitely over for me and GH. I imagine that only the most devoted of fans or those looking to have their first crack at it will be picking this up. Otherwise, Rock Band is really satisfying all my rhythm game needs.
