Monthly Fees In Monster Hunter 3 Could Be Scrapped

The Monster Hunter franchise is something of a power house, but when it was announced Monster Hunter 3 would have monthly subscription fees for online play in Japan, it raised a few eye brows.

However, it might not be the case in the West, and it's something that Capcom will be looking at closely as the game's Western release approaches.

The only game we ever got on consoles was Monster Hunter on PS2. There's no real trend to base anything else off of.

As for my opinion, I'd rather not have to pay monthly for a game I can play freely on a portable system (and that I play more than when I'm on a console).

1.3 - even if it's free now. boyscott their azzez
publishers alwayas try to test their water with those subscription based games. put out a popular game and say it's subscription based and see the fans reactions. "oh they have negative reactions. okay, i guess that's not the time yet, we'll just say it's free for now. and two years from now, we'll try agian when the dumb fans forget all about it."

1.4 - well believe it or not
japan does tend to pay subscriptions for games we generally dont pay to access in US, this isnt just limited to Monster hunter.

i assume capcom wont charge for the online, unless they REALLY want MH to be stillborn on arrival.

the game is having issues being accepted on consoles in japan as it is, and it wasn't exactly popular in the US. the PSP versions in the US have seen a huge turnabout, but console sales are still up in the air...

They should. It'll be F-ing BS if they charged us. I'd understand if it was Frontier but it's not continually growing with content as Frontier. Frontier is crazy!

Now let's put it on the PSP and/or PS3.

I don't like paying subs for Japanese games. Besides FFXI, I've never played a Japanese game with subs model that had support anything short of abysmal. And even though FFXI is well supported, the customer service is awful compared to devs based over here in the West. They've a long way to go before I trust Japan to treat me well for the money I pay monthly.

I don't understand... How come we can play so many FPS online for free and when it comes to games like this we always have to pay? Uncharted will have co-op and competitive, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 has some online modes too and what about Resistance 2 were the multiplayer it's so massive? All of them free.

Think of Monster Hunter as a mini-MMO or rather medium sized one, in terms of everything about it, I would say that it pretty much could be slated as an MMO. That's probably why they have/had the monthly fees. To get far in that game anyway you pretty much HAD to have someone help you (unless you wanted to take the long route of playing the game). So under that guise people would then have to pay to play online to get help for Monsters they needed stuff from.

If true, this could be good or bad, depending on the breaks.

On the one hand, online right out of the box and no need for annoying subscriptions. On the other, if not particularly motivated, Capcom could take a 'You Get What You Pay For' stance. As Monster Hunter games are difficult enough when running perfectly fine, I shudder to imagine tackling one without a smoothly-functioning online infrastructure.

Is this game like an MMO online? I could barely understand why I was getting charged monthly for WOW (the one month I actually played the game before canceling) So I really dont see the point here.

Well, WoW and MMOs in general constantly demonstrate where your money is going in the form of regular tweaks, balances, patches, fixes, and updated content. Besides the occasional expansion, most content comes from updates which your monthly fees support.

I dunno what justifies Monster Hunter charging for online besides banking on its popularity. How is it any more robust than Demon's Souls or WKC?

If you only played WoW for one month, how did you get charged? It's free the first month.
