Sony demos PS3 wand with LittleBigPlanet

Footage from Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference has slowly been trickling on to the Internet over the past couple of days, the latest batch of which comes in the form of five-minute plus video of folk utilizing the PS3 motion-controller with LittleBigPlanet.

1 - I actually. . .
really like the wand integration for this game. It adds a new challenge to the game, and because the wand is so accurate it can do some really fanastic things (like guide a vessel for Sackboy to travel in, or hold up an umbrella to protect him from acid rain). This one has my approval.

1.1 - Yea i'm impressed
The intergration could be alot of fun. You could have 4 player games where 2 players are on wands and 2 are sackboys/girls. One wand has to protect 1 sack and vice versa.

It could be alot of fun, even competitive challenges.

Yeah I thought it was looking really cool and fun until I saw the umbrella then it really clicked with me even more and went from merely cool and fun ... to brilliant.

That's what motion controls should be about. Precision and accuracy.

1.5 - What I really like...
Is how this further opens up LittleBigPlanet (and other games) to the rest of the family.

You can be the 'hardcore' gamer, and actually get a lot of fun out of collaborative play with someone who has never held a DualShock before - they get to interact in a much more accessible way.

Awesome!

wow.... That was nice. But the only problem I have is WHERE THE FU*K IS MY ANALOG STICK SONY?????

I am serious guys, I mean here I am criticizing Natal and asking 360 fanboys "How the hell do you move in a shooter" and here Sony is making the same mistake.... If Sony thinks that I am going to play Killzone 2 with a DS3 in one hand and these controllers in another, then forget it.. It's great with the controller only.

I am not getting hyper, but this is seriously potential down the drain if it doesn't come with an analog stick... I saw that RE5 gameplay vid and it was great.. The accuracy was spot on, but still the movement was with DS3 which is stupid.

Seriously Sony don't make the same retarded mistake you made with a PSP... Just throw in an analog stick in a final build... This is something that can really be deemed as a hardcore Wii and can really help move PS3s.... JUST DON'T BE CHEAP AND ADD AN ANALOG STICK SONY (won't mind if you throw in some triggers and ⃞△◌X buttons as well).

@Darkeyes, I agree. But, the DS3 could be the way to go. Not to say, the DS3 as a physical controller, but maybe parts of it. Sony (or 3rd parties) could bring a "half-DS3" with the stick and some buttons as an add on (makes this quasi a Nunjuk). That'll work. And if you don't want to spend the money, you can still use the DS3 (because you got one anyway). You gotta buy the Nunjuk for the Wii as an add on separately also. Not a big deal, I think.

I wonder if motion control will be in The Last Guardan. Like to stroke the creature or something, or climbing because in a video that was up here yesterday the guy that helped design the motion wand thing said that it can tell how hard you grip the wand.

yet it somehow give the impression that it is now a dumed down wii game using those controls. After this I bet someone will do something similar for either wiiware or a full retail wii game.

You know, I really don't like how gimmicky this motion controller thing is but I do like the way it's used here. A lot.

edit: I actually think the DS3 in your other hand setup would work well. It'll be like the Wii, which is actually pretty comfortable.

"How the hell do you move in a shooter"

Good question. And also how do you control the camera? They would need to include two analog sticks to do that. One joystick on a wand would be playable with one hand, but not two of them, besides that would be something that's already there (Sixaxis), which requires two hands. They could separate the two joysticks onto something stationary or use Dual Shock as they plan to currently, with a holder or cradle perhaps. I don't know if one could control two joysticks with one hand though. That might need some getting used to.

1.17 - The ps3 can support 7 players...
for some games. Pixel junk racers was one example of a 7 player game. That being said, I could see them adding wand support for LBP so you could have up to 7 friends playing instead of just 4. Think about some of the obstacles you could make where the people with the wands have to deal with each of the sack players as they do things on different parts of the screen.

If there's no analog sticks on the wand, then screw it! To make this successful with the hardcore, they needed to find a way to get most of the buttons on the wand! I liked the gamer access mock-up; Little big planet has the least buttons in a PS3 game and still he couldn't use the wand to play the game.

I hope they didn't fail this for the hardcore.

Another "help me play this game" game mode.

Looker better implemented than Mario Galaxy, but if the person helping you isn't any good, decides to a douche, then its just going to ruin everything.

Well doesn't that apply to EVERY co-op experience ever? If your partner isn't going to be helpful, then co-op is impossible. So ... that's not like some kind of new concept for this implementation. Also, this is much more immersive than Mario Galaxy. In Mario Galaxy, all the second player can do is point to star pieces and collect them. No actual effect on the success of the first player. In this, both players really have to work together to get through the level, so it is actually a co-op experience, and not just a "I will play, and you get to point at stuff but not actually have any effect on what I'm doing" type of situation like Mario Galaxy.

I mean that one person is actually playing the game while a 2nd helps the 1st get through certain parts. Not really the same as two people helping each other at certain parts while they *both* play the game.

congratulations sony by showing the motion controls used in two different gaming genres, From social party gaming (LBP) that has made the wii popular. To hardcore Third Person Shooters Resident Evil.

All while Natal has managed to show one hardcore game Burnout Paradise, which is not even its demographics genre of choice (shooters).

Sony wand look more practical and since its a next gen more precise version of the wii controlls, automatically adds 3rd party suport because developers could easily port games over to the other platforms while upgrading to the ps3 next gen graphics.

Thats why i feel natal will be left out in the cold since its so different than the other, in order for it to suceed it will need Microsoft 1st party support which we all now it lack of.

And it will need exclusives from 3rd party support, which at this day of age is harder on their wallet since they dont have the install base advantage.

You did notice that the LBP "integration" involved new game mechanics right? Specific parts that the MC could interact with. That its not usable with older levels.

Oh so now Motion controls are accepted lol. I'm sorry but i would like to see a game made from the ground up for both Natal and the wand before i start praising Sony or MS. Seriously I could see both working in different ways but see this as nothing more than a wii clone in this vid.

@ Beans:

Nothing more than a Wii clone? So what. If you haven't noticed, the Wii is the most popular gaming console this generation, and is on its way to being the most popular gaming console of all time. So how is adding the functionality that led to Wii's popularity a bad thing? People like the Wii, they think this type of interactivity is fun, and when it's utilized in fun ways with good software, it's hard to beat. I still enjoy playing Wii Bowling.

I'm excited for the Motion Controller because the PS3 already has a great bowling game in High Velocity Bowling, it's a fuller, richer, better game than Wii Bowling, but the controls aren't as intuitive and they aren't as fun. When it gets patched to support the motion controller in the Spring, it will have that intuitive control style of Wii Bowling, but coupled with its already more advanced, realistic, versatile setting (with better graphics, to boot), and trust me, Wii Bowling will get shelved and High Velocity will be my new bowling game of choice.

LittleBigPlanet is a top-notch piece of software, it's a great game, very charming and fun, and it is well-suited to motion-controller implementations. LittleBigPlanet is a good complement for motion controls, and motion controls are a good complement for LittelBigPlanet. Don't pretend like there's absolutely no way motion controls can bring something new, exciting, innovative, or fun to the table, because it's clear that they can, and when you have the right software and the right implementation of motion controls together, you have magic.

Even if its a Wii clone. I don't want to play all my games with a motion controller, but others I might, like Baseball, Tennis or Golf. Currently you have a choice to get a Wii if you want to do that - and still keep your usual gaming habits (and can live with the visual downgrade). In the future you just need one machine, and can get both. That actually a great idea, I think. While there is Natal, which does neither. It forces the player again to change their gaming behavior, or M$ doesn't take themselves to seriously and keep the controller as their main input system (but how is that "changing the future of gaming" then ?). Oh, its another buzzword, I get it...

I honestly don't think we've seen the real potential for this yet.

There's still the 3D space as well as other games like FPS's or stuff we haven't thought of yet.

The problem with Natal, is that it won't cater to any real hardcore games unless you use a controller which beats the purpose of their whole "controller-less" concept. How would you play a third person shooter or first person shooter using Natal?

We've already seen it with racers, but it looks really inaccurate and who honestly can hold up their arms like a steering wheel for more than 10 minutes before you start getting tired?

Both have potential, but for some reason I don't really care about neither until I've seen something that isn't a gimmick or Wii-like.

Well, then those levels aren't for you. When you bought LittleBigPlanet, those levels weren't even on the table as a possibility. Now that they're coming, you can either buy a motion controller to enjoy them, or you can just continue playing LittleBigPlanet as it was when it came out and ignore the motion controller levels.

They will do a LBP lemmings style with sackboys walking and you keeping them alive with the motion controler. like survivor sackboy THAT would be cool!!! and make your own levels. but i hope they make an oblivion like game using the wands, couse i really see that working out with the wands. maybe insomaniac can do it, couse they can do almost anything.

LBP (or Sackboy) dynamics aside, you could actually just use the creator to make some stand alone "wand mini games" which of course you could upload for the community to enjoy. The physics and everything else are all there for you.

@dreamcast

Exactly which makes for a swell party game, the wii is not the most popular for casuals because of its robust online which everyone knows lacks.

Its popular because its funny quirky party game console, imagine 3 people playing this game together 2 with motion controlls with one trying to sabotage the game, while the other job is to help all under the influence of alchol priceless.

EDIT @Beans
the game doesnt have to made from the ground up, sony just demostrated that it will not jeapordise hardcore fans that dont want anything to do with the wand, by showing the option that you can still play your Resident Evil 5 the same way your used too with dualshock.

But appeasing the casuals that dont have the motor skills to use to analog sticks at the same time, but letting them in on the fun because if you cant point you can play. Sony just killed two birds with one stone.

They are games being worked on from the ground up but isnt it grand to know that when it launches the odds are in favor of a game you already own and mastered will probably be backward compatible.

To be honest I'm not impressed with just using the wand as a pointer. Is the only use of these motion control gizmos to replace a mouse in terms of control? Because using a mouse would probably be easier than using this. Using a mouse in RE5 would give you the control and accuracy of a motion controller. It's only because accuracy has been dumbed down from mouse to analogue stick in the first place that people think that this kind of accuracy of movement is amazing.
