Activision Q3 Financials, PS3 Second Highest Console Earner

Activision have just posted their financial results for their third quarter ending September 30 2009, which shows that the PS3 still has a significant amount of sales that Activision cannot overlook.

The Wii continues to sell relatively well each week but publishers haven't found success with software on the console. It's seems if it isn't publish by Nintendo, the software doesn't find a audience.

Edit @ below

When Starcraft II and Diable 3 launches Activision will be printing money. Next week ActiBlizzards shareholders may be taking a bath with $100 bills after Modern Warfare 2 launches.

So who need who more? Activision is a the joke of the gaming industry these days. I HOPE they drop support and take their rehashed games with them. Like Sony said, they just like to talk a lot.

Funny thing is that I don't buy CoD, GH, or any other of their listed big sellers. Games I bought this year were Wolverine and Prototype. Guess I'm not in Activision's main focus, wonder if that means they'll be putting out less games I like and more I obviously don't?

And deserves to.

@1.6: Why should they be "reeling"? They are kicking ass. They are on the verge of what could be one of the biggest game launches ever in terms of sales, World of Warcraft is a freaking money machine, DJ Hero just came out and should make some bucks for them, they have Diablo 3 and Starcraft II coming along into a PC market that is DESPERATE for titles.

ATVI should be a $13-14 stock right now, minimum.

Love or hate Activision, they are going nowhere but up as a business.

They honestly shouldnt have anything to b1tch about the system. Yea it costs more but the costs are way more than made up for.

Also we all know which console Activision advertises for, this isnt in the least surprising.

Those PSP numbers are disappointingly low. No wonder developers don't want to support the PSP.

What games did Activision bring to PSP in 2008-2009?

Nothing but movie tie in shovelware mostly...

Maybe if Activision TRIED they would get some money out of it?

EDIT

BTW...completely off topic but if you want a PSPgo in Canada they are a $169 at myaxs.com (this is a store run for customers of TD Canada Trust but you can use ANY visa to register i think if not...TD VISAs start with 4520 01)...they also have the DSi for $139 if you like that platform!)

4 - What Activision games were
released that account for Xbox moving up 3% year over year while PS3 only moved up 1%?

Was there an Activision exclusive?

If not...Activision had a point about b1tching on the PS3 since they were not seeing the growth on that platform that the were seeing in the Xbox.

Next year should tell the tale I guess.

no exclusive. Most (I said most, not all) third party multiplatform titles do better on the X360 due to its user base. Of course, every now and then you have exceptions, but that would be the rule of thumb. Also, when you look at activision's big sellers, you'll notice most of them are sequels to games that were released on the X360's first year (CoD and GH both saw a release on the X360 in its first year, and both saw strong sales despite also being released on other platforms like the PS2 and the PC). The X360 is the platform to play CoD games (despite the PC version having better graphics and controls) as it has the biggest CoD user base and has what many believe to be a more FPS friendly controller than the PS3, leading to strong CoD sales on the X360 year after year.

7 - interesting
The biggest point here is that despite being the leader in HW sales, the Wii doesnt have the biggest game sales. A lot of Wii owners dont buy as many games as 360/PS3 ones do (dont go crazy, I own all 3), and the ones they do buy are mainly published by Nintendo.

Despite the fact activision has released very few core offerings on wii, it was still realtively close to the sales on ps3. Meanwhile this leaves out the inevitable observation that World of Warcraft is still it's top earner. meaning that overall ps3 was actually in 3rd place with wii hanging close behind. Sorry if anyone has something to brag about it's 360.

Though who wants to brag about giving the most money to Activision anyway. They beat their ips to death and gouge gamers as far as they think they can. As far as i'm concerned they are grimier then EA at this point. Give me capcom or konami any day of the week.

9 - Proof that the 360 continues to be the main console money earner for developers
There was talk recently of developers earning more money from the ps3, but I guess we can put that down to wishful fanboy thinking.

Dude, it is no secret that the 360 generates the highest attach ratios.
Added to that, they have more installed base.

You do the maths.
It is not hard, and activision's most recent report is another instance of proof.

Why get angry?
The facts and maths agree with me.

EA makes most of its money out of the PS3

the only thing that makes the 360 on the top is COD

9.4 - Let's get real here.
All this is proof of is Activision made more on the 360 this particular quarter. And Sony still brought in more overall with the one two punch of PS2/PS3.
At any rate you can't base developer trends in the industry from one quarter from one developer. Many other developers, Activision included, have had quarters where the PS3 came out on top.

Ubisoft routinely reports PS3 revenue over the 360. So does EA. This doesn't happen all the time but can we make sweeping statements about the entire industry based on this?

Of course not.

I bet PC was a lot more than $32 million just look at WoW
over 11+ million active subscribers X $15 the monthly cost X by 12 months

If this calculation is correct Activision Blizzard makes $1.9 Billion per year on WoW alone, its almost like they want PC to fail releasing figures like this, with WoW it would be impossible to make less than $250 million per year on PC never mind the other games

10.1 - Money made from mmog's is reported seperate from PC data.
They made 301 million on WOW this quarter, which was reported separately from PC game data. I did the same thing and looked at the PC data first, without realizing it didn't include WOW.

Wonder how much more Microsoft brought in over Sony for Activision if Windows based PC's were added in to the MS total? Regardless, the 360 is the top singer earner this quarter. You should just get over it.
