'The future of shooters is RPGs' – Bleszinski

Epic Games' distinguished design director Cliff Bleszinski believes that RPGs will mould the future of the shooter genre.

Speaking to Develop, Bleszinski said: "I had a conversation with Harvey Smith – one of the lead designers on Deus Ex – and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs. He said he completely agreed."

True to form, Bleszinski was cryptic when discussing the Gears franchise in this light. When asked if it was important that the Gears series remains innovative in the future, he said:

“It depends on where things go. I mean, one could wean that from the comments I made earlier about the future of shooters is RPGs and see where things are going with us.”

Ah..Gears might have rpg elements..hmm

As much as I love rpg's, like-wise Gears, mixing those two together would be a horrible idea, for one reason, I remembered when I started Gears 1, and they gave me Fenix, I was "yh this is a badass", and he was...he was strong and accurate and whatever since the beginning, so me having to worry later on whether I want him to endure more damage or be more accurate wouldn't be such a gd idea, even though Cliffy B directing a rpg may end up well

@ below: well yh sure, but think of it this way, they already have two games out of the trilogy out, and I bet more than half of the ppl that bought Gears are probably mainstream gamers, you get my point you know the ppl who just want to pick up a game and start shooting, even though it would be nice if we could have something like weapon upgrades in the game, but that's about it

A GEoW quality type shooter with rpg elements = win

I like when other genres add an rpg spin to their games.

It already happened with action / adventure games like zombie-fest Dead Rising and Castlevania: SotN.

I say bring on the level-ups! Just limit the grinding and fetch-quests... :)

Errrr... ever heard of Gears of War 2 - Horde mode?

It was out before CoD WaW's zombie mode - which is just a twist on Horde mode.

IMO - those aren't RPG elements.

1.8 - Deus Ex is great
but rpg elements for gears could be upgrades for the weapons, or better armor.

Idont think gearswill ever be very RPG like.

Well if Borderlands plays as good as it looks then I'll have to agree I think RPG elements add depth to a game no matter what the genre.

When Gears of War 1 was released I thought it was fun but got bored quickly because all you do is shoot and cover - shoot and cover -shoot and ....... more cover. Fun for a while but got old quick. Thats why i didn't buy Gears 2. The Next year after Gears 1 I bought Mass Effect and I was much happier with that game. You shoot and cover but there are upgrades, Interesting Story, and deeper gameplay. Same thing happened when Killzone 2 came out. I said yeah it looks cool but it might get boring since there are no upgrades or building of power. I opted for Fallout 3 instead which i was much happier with. RPG shooters might not have the multiplayer aspects of the regular shooters but they have much better stories and more engaging gameplay. I won't buy another shooter unless it has RPG like elements or is a RPG.

you're not saying much my friend.

Mass effct 90%+ average
Fallout 3 90%+ average

and you call them trash?

some people really need to think before they SPEAK!

if you dont like these Games Say it for yourself but dont be saying the game is Trash when the gaming world doesnt think so! I also think that some japanese game devs need to look up to the Western Rpgs and learn from them because alot of of jrpgs are giving us the same old thing.

Ahhhh the good ol days when PS2 ruled the world and JRPG's were actually good.

But in seriousness Lost Odyssey,Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 were all cool IMO.....but Mass Effect, Fallout, Fable and Oblivion and just better made, more unique games that give you more freedom and are actually relevant to American/European/Australian culture. JRPG's come off as wacky and kinda retarded honestly.

That's your opinion, but I personally enjoy Action RPGs much more than turn-based, which is usually what the Japanese do, but not always for example Demon's Soul is made in Japan but is a action RPG, plus dont say that they are trash like it's a fact, you should atleast say that its your opinion, I really enjoyed them

Well I think JRPG's are trash so their you have it. I played FF once thought it was the most idiotic thing I've ever seen. Saw the demo once for Blue Dragon, walked away in horror that anyone outside of a 10 year old could find that entertaining.

Deus Ex is probably one of the best videogames ever created. It was released almost ten years ago and it's still unmatched in many ways... It's a shame no developers followed its path since then. I guess it was too sophisticated for the mainstream audience publishers want to reach

Well apart for the horrible animations, terrible voice acting, bland boring character designs and repetetive locations (copy and pasted) which all look the same they're a techinal mess also.

Not to mention the uninspired stories (or non existent) and dull as hell soundtrack.

Maybe the gameplay is the saving grace for these games but for RPG veterans who started playing them before PS1/pre-PS1 era these games are very far from perfect or even good.

Mass Effect not so much but Bethesda games are poor poor attempts.

Im 18 and I've been playing rpgs ever since the SNES era!!! If I take your logic into consideration , I am part of those So called Veterants and I STILL think that Oblivion , Mass Effect and Fallout are Well done RPG's.

like said earlier on , you dont like the Game its okay But Dont speak for Others.

Your not very smart..... Mass Effect, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 have great stories with interesting locals and great gameplay. The wasteland in Fallout 3 looked awesome. Oblivion's landscape was breathtaking for the time it was released in 2006. Mass Effects Story won so many awards in 2007 you need a whole page to list them all. Anybody who thinks regular shooters like Killzone and Gears hold a lick, in terms of story, to the games i mentioned above is crazy or you didn't play them seriously.

Valkyria Chronicles is not as fast-paced as WRPGs like Fallout 3. Cliffy B is referring to a more action-packed RPG. VC is turned-based, from what I saw.

What was so good about the story in mass effect. It didn't seem that great to me. I'm not trying to say that jrpg's have better stories, but the story in mass effect wasn't really great either.

Might as well just kill off the entire RPG genre and just call it RPG elements. Every frickin' American developer likes to ruin RPG's by turning them into shooters, and now some Japanese devs are doing the same. What's even the point of having any different genres any more? Just have shooters as a genre and mix in different elements. That's all people want to play right? A shooter with RPG elements, a shooter with racing elements, a shooter with puzzle elements, a shooter with action/adventure elements. Might as well just eliminate all other genres and just churn out shooter after generic, mainstream, heavily hyped, underperforming shooter. *sigh* /rant

Or to be more apt...RPG elements in FPS is the way to go. If a first person shooter was an RPG it wouldn't be an FPS. We can all argue that some games now have RPG elements, but I think it would be very difficult to make a FPS a complete RPG since you don't see the character you're playing as that much (unless third person shooter). The only game that I can think of that really did this well so far was Oblivion and Fallout 3. True RPG experiences that I feel should be the future of FPS. Please...Stop with the mundane war shooters...WE'VE HAD ENOUGH!!!
