User Review : R.U.S.E.

Ups
  • Fantastic landscape graphics
  • Very strong requirement for strategy
  • Very flexible game
Downs
  • Hard to read numbers on chip counters of large groups
  • No North arrow (a lot of descriptions in single player use compass bearings)
  • A lot of irritating videos showing other aspects of the story flash up. Generally whilst you're in t

For Strategy Lovers

First of all, this will NOT appeal to a lot of RTS fans. The scale of the game is from a Generals perspective looking over a table in a war room. Mainly you will play this extremely zoomed out (unable to see much), where units and battlegroups appear as chip counters rather than rendered individuals. All units are fairly easy to destroy (with the right weapons), there is very little micromanagement, not the same focus on economy, and is more about capturing and holding territory in the form of a front than building a base and destroying theirs.

I am writing this review based on playing the campaign for several hours, but wanted to write it now hopefully before any negative reviews for what I think is a fantastic effort from Ubisoft. In my opinion, this is the best strategy game I have ever played (apart from chess).

Let's face it, in all other RT"Strategy" games, generally you build more units than an opponent, then overpower their base. This probably involves disrupting their economy so you DO have more units, but still that is generally the limit of strategy. Not a criticism, I loved SupCom1.

RUSE is different. Maps are huge, (think SupCom1) but there are few options for quickly moving troops across. Add to this a relatively small unit cap, and you will soon realise that the game is about picking where to fight, and when to pull back. Concentrated attacks on one front will leave you weak somewhere else on the map.

I lost several missions whilst still learning (and playing the game like another RTS) because a single tank managed to get behind my front line. It does have a steep learning curve.

Add to this the intelligence/counter intelligence aspect, which can disguise where and what you are attacking/defending with, and you have a VERY unique game. Ambushes are very easy to fall into, but also set.

PROPER 3D terrain. This includes line of sight and shell trajectory restrictions.

The controls were awkward at first on the 360, but after several hours have now got the hang of them. They are actually very good once you are used to them.

I admit to not having played this on Xbox live or skirmish yet, but already love this game.

Try the demo on Xbox live, but bear in mind that the controls take some getting used to, but are very intuitive once you do.

GOOD JOB UBISOFT!

Dante's Inferno and R.U.S.E. are now Backwards Compatible!

Just a little while ago, Major Nelson posted on Twitter that Dante’s Inferno and R.U.S.E. have been added to the ever-growing list of backward compatible Xbox games. The games are available for purchase through the digital store, or just insert your old disc and the game should automatically download. Dante’s inferno is awesome. Great game.

spwittbold2107d ago

If they would add Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge and Ninja Gaiden 2 to BC I'd jazz my pants.

Switch4One2107d ago

I'm waiting for Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1 to come to BC.

MWH2107d ago

What a great game LoS was.

Switch4One2107d ago

And out of nowhere as well! It really had no business being as good as it was.

MWH2107d ago

True, it's rare to play a game with moderate to no expectations then have your mind blown away!

The unfortunate thing is that at the time many reviewers were not kind to it because it did Castlevania differently and because it copied from God of War. i found those reviews sad because they missed a great game for stupid reasons. Same for Dante's Inferno.

One thing is for sure, we were the lucky ones 👍🏻

Switch4One2107d ago

I immediately got a God of War vibe but it was done so well that I didn't care that it deviated from the series so much.
The story, the setting, the Sir Patrick Stewart, the gameplay, all wonderful!

MWH2107d ago

Don't forget the music it is amazing.

I thought the same and that's what those journslists keep missing. Games copy from each other all the time and since the begining, GoW itself borrowed from games like Devil May Cry and Rygar but it is the excution that should also count and everything about this game was top quality.

Nice to see a fellow gamer who enjoyed the same rare gems.

Surprised that RUSE has been added. Wasn’t that game taken off Steam and the Microsoft Store a few years back due to publisher rights issues?

What Happened To Strategy Gaming

What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions? Money…

You need look no further than the strategy gaming genre for confirmation. I recall a time. A very long time ago, when finding a good strategy game was as easy as stopping at an Electronics Boutique, and going to the strategy section. You could pick out almost any game and not miss.

These days that’s not the case. Why? Well, money, and “they” think we Americans are stupid.

I wonder it XCOM will deliver, and finally fill that void missing in consoles. Nothing really worthy in the strategy genre.

All those games that IGN and gamespot rate with a 7 or 8, like Halo Wars and such, it should be more like 3's or 4's.

Those games utterly suck. About the only game that has gotten it right on the console is R.U.S.E

I disagree very strongly with you. Ensemble did an OUTSTANDING job with Halo Wars. Go on there on any given weekend and you'll see there are more players in that than Halo 3. They built the game from the ground up for a console, and it shows. Albeit, the game is pretty simple compared to pc-strategy games, but the reason for that is obvious, the controller. I have played that game a lot and can say that it is still fun, relaxing, and a great change of pace.

Tell me please, how does Halo Wars "utterly suck"?

Robochobo4274d ago

It's still here, I enjoy playing the Total War series so much. The mods for each one keep it fresh, and the Third Age Total War mod for Medieval Total War II (Based off the LotR) has kept me busy for weeks. Continuous DLC for Shogun Total War II adds days of game play and makes it feel like a new game each time you run it. Games like Tropico and Sim City can have you invested in spending time building and sustaining massive cities for weeks/days as well. When Rome Total War II comes out at retail, the strategy genre will boom yet again, and will usher in a new era of what a RTS/Strategy game should be considered.

Dood mods are fucking awesome
Ive brrn playing the Game of Thrones mod myself

And to answer this narrow-minded title
They're on PC!

iamlegend99994274d ago

Well I still play Warcraft 3. I will never stop playing that game.

h311rais3r4274d ago

There's plenty o strategy games on pc.

I miss dune 2000! I hate going through hoops to try to play it. The only game that kept me so captivated that i played for over 24 hours straight!

Looking back: R.U.S.E and why gamers don't reward new IP development

Digitally Downloaded writes: "What happens when you take a genre that console gamers don’t usually get to enjoy, work hard to make it look good and play well and then release it? Encouragement to never do it again."

i actually enjoyed the game and how it played

rdgneoz34354d ago

I enjoyed it as well. Just towards the end, I ended up getting stuck on one of the last missions and since there not many playing it, trying to look for help wasn't easiest.

gamerz4354d ago

RUSE makes good use of the Move controller.. but it did get a little fussy when there is a lot of units right next to each other.

Ju4354d ago

I liked it. I am glad some people take the risk to actually make games I like, even knowing the masses won't buy it. Don't give up, people.
