Sony: Eye Toy has more potential than Wii Remote
55
The PS3's ability to track the position of an object in 3D space using the new Eye Toy offers up more potential for motion-sensing gaming than the Wii Remote, Sony told CVG yesterday.

It has potential, I'm sure. It's just that...the Wii is a novelty item at this point.
No matter how good the Eye performs...people will get the Wii because of the media's hype. The same goes for anything. Some people actually believe Barrack Obama is a kind man...

So sony's the indie, amazingly under-estimated victim with no hype at all?
Wow... if it works and it's fun and is marketed like the ps3 has been all along it'll sell well, maybe even dominate. I can't believe that a 6-month old system that's selling really well despite it's price and only just developing game catalog has fans with a victim complex already.
There's a lot to this. Sony could certainly market it like Nintendo has... but I doubt most of the PS3 gamers would be happy. Imagine Sony ignoring an upcoming AAA title (like Metroid) and promoting their equivalent of WiiFit, just to secure the casual market. With nintendo, at least people expect party games (Mario Party, Kart, etc.)... but gamers would make the WiiSports backlash seem like a teaparty compared to what they'd do to sony. So maybe it will be ignored, but that may not be the Wii-Hype's fault. It might be that Sony thinks their gamers would burn their PS3's in the streets.
Also, if the Wii's a novelty then Sony's Eyetoy implementation should have nothing to worry about... So buck-up, son. Things aren't that bad.
*edit @ boglin*
They're certainly marketing at the people who already own the system who happen to download an optional preview and go to the vc when their blue light glows. In other words, less than half of their own install base even know about the MP preview channel, and quite a few of those don't care (young children). Certainly they're marketing to a lot of people (possibly even millions) given that small percentage. But that's tiny compared to what they'd gain in marketing numbers with just a few well-placed commercials. In other words, fab-cheap idea that works well for the already sold target market, but where they're actually spending money tells you what they care about.
Btw... I'm a diehard nintendo fan. I love the vc marketing idea, but to do a real, supportive marketing campaign multiple, non-online media outlets are still required. (At least for a few years)...
*edit2 @ witchking*
Nah, Metroid is too complex to be reduced to just point, strafe and shoot. That's not it. It's all about the money, baby. Nintendo's not letting go of much this round. It'll sell and we'll love it. But they don't believe that it's going to pick up the market they want most at the mo.

How is Nintendo ignoring Metroid??? Or am I just not getting the true meaning of this statement? Wii owners are able to download a Metroid Prime: Corruption Channel to preview movies/game play etc. Likewise, its the month of Metroid!!??!! Already we've got Metroid and Super Metroid on the VC?? As far as I'm concerned that's smart marketing to the consumer base who already own the system, which if you think about it...is millions....

I think the issue is that Nintendo announced the Zapper-gun-thingy at E3 but lo and behold, the AAA FPS that is coming out isn't compatible with the Zapper-thingy. At least, that's my assumption in how Nintendo is "ignoring" Metroid.

Could be cool if it works correctly (lighting issues fixed, background movement ignored, etc.).
A comment at another site reporting this said it reminded him of some infrared tests Sony had done previously with a wand being tracked.
If, say a wand or other accessory could be tracked by color, temperature, a light radioactive coating, etc., it could really be a great innovation in control.
As to whether it rivals the wiimote... is it really that hard to see that they're different things? Simple movements will be possible with this, but if you want varied attacks you're still going to need some sort of controller to send varied commands. Once you add that you've got the same principle with a different, creative implementation.
Of course, Sony's going to say it's better. That's their job. It may be, but we'll have to see how it works in practice.

You mentioned something that I was planning to comment on - IR. It seems that Sony is concentrating on the Wii remote's motion-sensing capabilities but ignoring its ability to be used as an IR pointer as well. Of course, Eye Toy software can most likely be developed to provide similar functionality.

9 - Definite potential.
I hope that they use it to the fullest. Training sims, Singstar competitions, interactive dance games - give the Wii a high-tech run for it's money.
Please note that those types of games are an affront to my good sense. (Nintendogs, Face-training, etc..) I'm just talking smart business here.
Oh, and Eye of Judgment is a day one purchase. Especially considering you get a starter deck, a game and a camera. For $60 bucks was it? Damn. (Never mind that you become addicted and pay thousands in booster packs, but $60!)
Cheers,
- C

12 - Hope Sony has something more than a card game
to show the potential of the PS3 Eye Toy (i`m sure the rpg-card freaks will find it fun though), and i don`t think a rpg-card game will show what it`s all about. The Singstar-support is ok too, but they need something else in addition.
The Eye Toy on PS2 was pretty cool when it came out, but i grew tired off it pretty fast, so i hope they have some more lasting concepts than last time. Still nothing like truing it for the first time, great fun and something to show off to visiting friends or people that don`t usually play video games. Hope Sony has some other Eye Toy news to share soon though.

3D camera tracking with a single fixed position camera? What happens when the tracked object gets obscured? Wiimote will always know where it's at.

Hahaha off course SONY will say that about their own product. Have you ever read Arthur Schopenhauer's 38 ways to win an argument? Notice how Sony and the developer apply some of Schopenhauer's techniques.
When asked about how the Eye Toy tracking capabilities compares to the Wii Remote, notice that he DOES NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION AT ALL. He just says "With it, we made this card game, we can make other things with it." He gives you something vague that pushes you in the direction he wants you to think in, so you can draw your conclusions based on that.
They do this bullsh!t all the time.

20 - More Potential
More potential problems.
And people thought bright sunlight directly into the Wii sensor bar was a problem.
Now I'm going to have to worry about anyone moving near me, maybe even turning on lights, and I don't think I'd be able to play a racing game with it, as simple as that is with the Wiimote.
This could be a disaster when/if it gets into peoples' home. It's has to be hard for this little thing to detect a person, and there are simply too many variables for which to test, from body shapes, to different lights, to other people in the area.

That tends to be my gut reaction. I'd love for this to work, but...
We just don't know. Right now it's all marketing. Until there's a product we can't know if issues have been resolved or not.
If... and this is a big IF... if they've been even mostly resolved then this is a world-class piece of tech.
Not saying that Sony couldn't... just that the odds are bad.

Sorry, Sony did. Apparently they disagree with you.
Also, saying something is or has more of anything is a comparison.
You know what? This is a market battle. There are only so many dollars out there and each company wants them. Saying "it's not next gen," or "it's got more potential, shouldn't be compared" doesn't amount to anything when someone's getting ready to buy a console for Christmas.
I hope that doesn't sound hostile. I get so sick of this "we're being outsold by millions but we should ignore it cause the wii is pedestrian/lowest common denominator". It's video games... it's all pedestrian.

23 - the new eyetoy has better tracking
better face recognition, faster fps, higher definition, works better than the first in low light settings(you won't be playing this outside either).
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
the PSEYE will rock.which is cooler:
remote control-wii remote(back to the future 2:"you got to use your hands?"or
hands free control-pseye:"wow!" "that's sure futuristic."
for those millions of gamers who bought eyetoy games, the choice is easy.it just needs more styles of games.like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
and if sony gives us control of the XMB with pseye support like this, then yes,it has better potential:

or this for online gaming:

If the new eyetoy is truly "sixaxis"(x-y-z) 3d, and doesn't get confused by friends, pets, ceiling fans, then kudos to sony.
Until it proves that it's only cooler hype.
People were just as vocal about how the wiimote might be perfectly implemented.

24 - Augmented Reality
About month ago I watched "Beyond tomorrow" rerun from 2001 !!!(I think) and they showed prototype of toy camera (It wasn't call eye toy). According to Beyond T. Sony has been working on Augmented Reality since 1995.
IF new Eye Toy supports that technology then eye toy is much more then a camera.

25 - Marketing Fluff
With every statement that a gaming company makes, you have to work hard to look past the "Buy this product" part and into the fact. Realistically, I don't see how it's possible for the EyeToy to be implemented in the same ways as the Wii Remote.
For example, how would bowling work? You would pretend that you were holding onto something, and from your movement the eyetoy would be able to determine speed, tilt, etc.?
But, actually, that's not why the EyeToy won't replace the Wii remote; when it comes down to it, consumers don't buy all that many non-included accessories like the EyeToy, and developers don't base their killer apps around them. It's pretty unlikely that hugely important software a la Wii Sports or Metroid Prime 3 would be based around the EyeToy.

34 - Eye toy isn't better than wii-mote
Tplarkin7- nice question- How do you move/or the screen) in 3d space with the eye toy? It woun't be the same playing lets say (an example) "gears of wars 2 for ps3 and wii"
With the eye toy it would not be the same playing that game as with the wii-mote
Eye toy looks good thou, just not hardcore promising games, but simple ones. That ducky boss card was funnny.
But this can't compare with the wii-mote. I'll be surprise if thier able to pull a game like elibits (Its fast pace game which eye toy doesn't seem capable of doing fast moving games ect...)
