Valve Should Really Shut Their Mouth

"Twiggy", PushSquare: "I have absolutely no problem with console exclusives. I love them, actually. Console exclusives are what make me a Playstation fan, a Nintendo fan and an XBOX fan. Granted I write my column on a Playstation website, that gives me a vested interest in the Sony side of things, but I still find it interesting the way a console exclusive can really define the philosophy of a platform. Halo and Gears Of War define the XBOX 360 just like Mario and Zelda do the Wii. Valve choose to keep their games exclusive to the XBOX 360 and PC platforms and I think that's absolutely fine. What I do object to is their "fanboy" mentality they use to justify the decision. Insomniac Games handle the situation well - whenever asked about plans to release a multiplatform game they simply reiterate their Playstation alliance; no need for insults or backhanders. Why can't Valve do the same?"

1.2 - I definitly agree.

I am a die-hard Valve fanatic. I have been since Half Life. I have played and replayed every single Valve game atleast 3 times each. I play CS 1.6 still to this day. I play Team Fortress 2. I play Counter strike Source. I love Valve. I think they make brilliant games.

But sometimes they need to shut the f*ck up. It is their choice to not develop for the PS3. But they don't have to be pricks about it. They can easily say "we won't develop for PS3 because we don't want to" and that is perfectly ok. If you ask any Sony exclusive team they would probably say the same thing about the Xbox or PC.

But the way Valve is going about this is just wrong. I value Valve as a developer, but what I value more is the respect that developers (should) give each other.

How can you say it's there hones opinion when every timed ask the question on why there is no PS3 version of games made by Valve the answer is different every time. To be honest Valve is lazy plain and simple there is no reason today (being PS3 going on its 4th yr) that any developer can not learn to develop on the PS3, 3 of Sony's top developers have already said they will provide help and tips on developing and have already help many new company's to make there game look exactly the same than there 360 counter parts Batman AA is a great example of this they took M$ flagship engine and made the game look and play great on the PS3. There is no excuse any more any developer who just wants to claim they don't have the resources or any other stupid excuse should just get out of the game all together this is not 2006 anymore.

their lack of professionalism is what bugs me the most. if they want to stay exclusively to 360 that's fine but as a 3rd party developer i strongly disagree about insulting other platform(s). it just doesn't look good for that particular company. there is absolutely no need to attack another platform as a developer. sony is no direct threat to valve, unless valve is a first party developer for ms, but they are not. so why all the negative statements? this only puts valve in a position with one less option when it comes time to expand.

(off topic)i don't know what it is but lately i've been seeing a lot of ads on tv where bk is insulting wendy's or mcdonalds. even ms VS mac. subway vs dominos. is this some new marketing technique? bash your competitors so you look better.

I don't understand the fascination PS3 fanboys have with Valve. I'm sick of seeing all the melodramatic outrage whenever Valve says their not going to develop for PS3. It's not even like Valve is going out of their way to say these things...their always responding to a question that everybody already knows the answer to..."Is Valve going to bring [Game name here] to the PS3?"

I play on PC and PS3, but why would you want them on the PS3? Do you really want to have to pay for DLC every time Valve releases an update, and Valve releases a ton of updates.

Game journalist need to stop baiting Valve.

Valve does not charge for "updates". They are free on PC and 360. And yes, they release a lot of them. "DLC", yes...they are forced to charge by Microsoft...but so is every other dev. The DLC they release on PC however is free.

Honestly, what's not to understand. PS3 gamers once asked for Valve titles, they said no in an indistinct manner and have since repeated themselves without being asked giving more and more insulting, lame, excuses.

Imagine if Kojima, after being asked numerous times for MGS4 on the 360, just gave 360 gamers the finger. They are getting a MGS game, but Kojima seems to be distancing himself from it with a semi-polite face. Which is far more than anyone at Valve has done.

They actually have given the finger.

I did not mind Valve but the crossed the line dissing the PS3 their excuses are about as dumb as an ashtray on a motorbike. Bungie, Epic, NaughtyDog, and Insomniac and all other developers have my respect with out causing a fanboy war saying one console is better than the other. A Valve game on my PS3 is a insult to my machine I was going to get Left 4 Dead 2 on my 360but I'll take my money elsewhere Valve is starting to act like Activision.

Isnt Valve showing a great example of how NOT to run a business? Like saying stupid things about one audience/group and by doing that alienating them from that group which means that that group asscociate Valve with something negative.
At least to me, these days when I hear of Valve I think of them as something negative not as a great developer and that wont help Valve to get my money if they do decide to develop games for ps3.

Companies that do exclusive (or predominantly exclusive) Xbox games are arrogant and talk crap about the PS3 in a very childish, immature and UNPROFESSIONAL way (Examples: Turn 10, Valve, Epic, etc.).... Sony developers, on the other hand, are professional and do not generally bash the Xbox, including Dave Jaffe, the most outspoken of those firmly in the Sony camp.

I guess you become who you choose to affiliate yourself with!

That's true, Jaffe even did an interview with Kotaku within a Gears 2 game. Outspoken for sure, but childish towards competitors? No way.

Why couldn't Valve just say something like this?

"We've got a really good thing going here with the PC community, and it's there that we would prefer to focus on. Since Xbox 360 is closer to home in terms of the pc-like architecture and online service, we can focus more on a 360 version without the costs of a brand new PS3 development team. It just works better for us as a developer that way. At the current time, we do not have a team that is experienced in developing for PS3, but perhaps in the future we would certainly like to look into it."

Or---

"We have a really good relationship with Microsoft, and the PC community is as always our top priority."

Both would have been fine, and probably true.

Agreed!! I think that if Valve does not want to develop games for the PS3 then that's fine. However they should not continue to belittle the PS3. Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I feel that people in these positions should not be fuelling the fire since they do have some responsibility.They don't want to be developing for the PS3, that's fine.

I also feel that people should stop asking them about PS3 development because they may must be fed up of answering the same question all the time.

Why is people getting upset with this?! I asked this question and gave a comment of letting this crap go and I lost a bubble. I have no control over that. Anyways, the guy just said that he liked the 360 & PC online community better. Now I do agree about the slander Gabe did in the past about the PS3 was wrong. But there were no mention of slander to the PS3. He just states that the online community (in his opinion) is stronger.
