Autoweek met with Gran Turismo creator and godfather Kazunori Yamauchi at SEMA and asked him the usual phalanx of questions--most importantly, when the heck is the game coming out?

1 - Have you played Forza Motorsport 3?
"I was watching the guys at our company trying it out in the office. I tried it a little bit. It's very similar in a lot of aspects to Gran Turismo. Some base components of the game are very different from Gran Turismo. It's a little bit different from what a simulator is. You can feel it when you drive it."

- ouch

1.1 - Maddens, is that really an ouch?
This man knows what hes talking about, and races real super cars. Considering stuff lost in translation... I doubt its as sharp toned as it seems, and looks to try to just say the titles are different.

Its not like hes saying GT is better than anything on the market thats been released in years... like some.

By The way: Lets count the 360 folk who NEVER.. EVER... go in stories marked "Playstation3"

I think this is more important:

"From our perspective, it doesn't seem like that long a time. To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that's the amount of time it takes to get it right"

"zomg longest GT to make EVARRrr"

I can feel it when I drive it, it feels like a real car, not just a simulator, XD unlike GT games which you know, feel nothing like the real cars.

funny part is, GT has been going down hill since GT1. such a shame really.

1.3 - Hmm...
who's opinion do I trust more? Yamauchi who has actually driven many of the amazing cars in the GT games, or Nai who probably isn't old enough to drive?

Should I care what butterbutt thinks or believe what I know from driving real cars, GT and FS,
Hmm all I care about is what I know. Not what some fickle little fanboy who drives his moms car and revs his engine at the red light. \

*edit*

LMFAO at the guy below me. I know nothing huh?, what do you know, bet you couldn't even find the fuse box in your car.

@AP3

http://www.metacritic.com/s...

Its been going down hill, GT3 was good but had even had a 70

But then GT4 turned around and gave it even lower scores for not doing anything special, especially no damage.

Then we had GT5P and GTpsp, and now GT5 with them state there will be no weather system *after I had been pointing this out for months*

So yes, the series has been going downhill.

BTW when your the only "sim" game with over 300 cars, your going to sell no matter what.

not to mention taking sells from over 15 years of games, and claiming it to be amazing is sad. thats 50 million for 7 games. not to mention some being sold old they only cost 2$ to buy on disk.

do your research little fanboy before trying to come after me.

@Gaf, that is stupid, "if you owned a super car I wouldn't put logos oni it" nor would you race the bloody thing, your statement right there is so doubled sided its pathetic. So its okay to race the car and wreck it but not to put stuff on it.

way to spin bud, way to spin.

Apparently you know nothing. And describing yourself isn't helping your standpoint in any way.

Glad I could help.

LOLOL!! Going downhill since GT1? Does 50 Million sold in the GT series sound like "going downhill"? I don't think so. If GT was going downhill there's NO WAY the Million and Millions of people would continue to buy it (including myself).

Learning how to fix your micromachine using your imagination doesn't count. In fact, I encourage 4 years to keep striving for the real thing. Glad I could try to find inspiration for you. Good luck in your future endeavors.

LMAO, Nai tries to not act like a fanboy, yet he calls the guy above him "butterbutt."

Damn, fanboys are getting more stupid every day.

On topic - What he says make sense, Forza isn't as good as simulator as GT in a lot of ways, and the only thing it really held over GT was damage, which GT has now implemented. On the other hand, the livery stuff is really good in Forza, they should have something similar in GT, but the way I see it is, if I owned a supercar, I would NEVER cover it with logos and stuff knowing how much the car itself would lose in value.

pm from NaiNaiNai (please mods ban him)

"LMFAO
so if you owned a super car you wouldn't put logos on it because it would hurt the cars price.

Yea because racing the car wouldn't do that.

Way to spin it droid."

Dude can't even take it when someone gives their opinion in real life. I'd probably only consider racing stripes at a maximum. Is it really that difficult to understand that if you owned a supercar or hypercar, you wouldn't want to paint it with a custom job?

Oh yeah, fanboys don't have a brain.

the man & his company just ooze with confidence and tact and [he] knows that he doesn't have to openly backhand T10's project with grandiose claims and puffed up assertions that aren't true. Instead he uses subtle sharp elbows and jabs which keeps PD more than an arms length away from its competition. Similar to the Hyundai Genesis compared to a Mercedes-Benz E Class. The Genesis is an ((OUTSTANDING)), if not Great effort, but is just not in the same league with MB no matter how hard they try.

I wonder how deep customizing is? GT5 Has autobrake and possible rewind? "such as driving lines, ABS, automatic braking, you can reverse your game" Its about time they fought back against forza, his comment suprised me lol.

1.14 - They asked Kaz this:
AutoWeek:
"Have any manufacturers paid to put their cars in the game?"

Kaz:
"There have been cases where they've shown that interest [in paying to play], but I don't think we've ever shown interest in [accepting money to include certain cars]."

AutoWeek:
"Wouldn't that be a profitable venture for you?"

Kaz:
"A lot of times it develops into a relationship where we collaborate to raise the level of the game."

And with just that, my respect for Polyphony Digital has skyrocketed beyond space and time. O_O

They have TRUE passion in what they do. Money is of no concern, other than what is needed to make the game.

Thank you Kazunori. We share the exact same view, not to mention T10 themselves stated that the game is geared in-between full simulator and arcade racer. That is what brings a "mainstream appeal".

2.1 - "Mainstream appeal?"
Come on, Burnout is mainstream. Car sims aren't. And GT nor NFS has lost sales due to not catering to this mysterious "main stream" car buyer that cant be quantified(of course only by the Turn10 folks who know game markets/sales more thant he more successful franchises, go figure.). Seems that there are more people interested in buying GT & NFS than there are Forza.

Getting people to play GT/NFS/Burnout/Grid has never been a problem...without automatic driving.

I had to laugh at a comment by a guy named bmount. He posted he's selling his PS3 because it's too hot and noisy. Instead he's getting a 360 and Forza 3. Good luck dude, that thing will be just as hot and a lot noisier.

-How many racetracks do you have in GT5?

There are 20 different environments and around 70 different track layouts.

-What other features will GT5 have?

There will be 400,000 polygons per car, 100 times more than were present on GT4. GT4 had 4,000 polygons per car. You can customize and tune the cars, too.

-What did GT5 cost to make?

[He and translator do some figuring, converting yen to dollars] $60 million. There are other games that cost more. Considering the size and scale of the game, I think it's probably a fairly small amount.

90% of the cost is delays. XD

Please despute my comment then, if its so stupid then it must be wrong right.

So please post why its wrong.

Nai, I take it you've just Turned 10? You type like a kid

Why is your comment stupid? Lets start with, no official release date has been set, so no delay has been made. Then lets go with Gran Turismo 1 took 5 years to make, and so is Gran Turismo 5. Then lets finish off with how the hell a 'delay' can be the cause of 90% of GT5's production costs. You reason like a child, so you must either be a child or an employee at Turn 10

6.1 - Yeah, that's an insane amount of polys.
You only see that number in CG production. The count was 200K for GT5: Prologue, but the car interiors weren't smooth enough, even then.

Factor in damage, and those extra polys are going to help out a lot.

As I said a couple of weeks back PD have increased the number of polygons per car and also on the tracks (although he doesn't speak about it here)

Previously they were 200,000 Poly's but now they're 400,000 Poly's which is just adding insane amount of detail to each car.

PD are doing a great job, keep it up!

It's great to read that this man can speak his mind against the competition but still keep a good sense of respect and humility in saying it., brilliant.

I think it's very reassuring that come March, GranTurismo 5 will be quite epic and could be a very good contender for next year's game awards.

I actually have Forza3 and do very much like the gameplay, especially adore racing on the longer real-world tracks of ( LeMans, Nurburgring ) but also the awesome made-up tracks of ( Fujimi Kaido, Rally di Positano and Sidewinder Proving Grounds ).. I thought these are the main stars of Forza 3 ( Turn 10 should think-up and build more of them as download in the future ) while the cars take 2nd for me.

The vid is good, he ( Sarazzin ) used to be the tarmac specialist for Subaru WRC in some events.

But still think and believe GranTurismo 5 will be greater and better.
