Nintendo oversaturating their core titles

From article:
"Nintendo brought some of their best franchises to Wii already in the first 3 years since launch, but with sequels to 3 Nintendo games coming this year, is Nintendo oversaturating their key franchises?"

Although Pilotwings was in developement, I have a feeling Nintendo next year will be the best yet for announcements as Nintendo stale sales will push them to preform better in the upcoming years.

I do find it odd how Nintendo is releasing sequels to games not even 3 years old. What is this Activistendo?

Well as long they make their games more challenging.

Besides, Metroid another M is not a direct sequel to metroid prime. ( its just a different time period), different gameplay mechanism.
Zelda TP was a GCN game.

Its a bit over the top really.

Nintendo just releases the same games over and over with a little variety. How many more mario karts and mario tennis and mario soccer do we need?

I find it odd as well, Galaxy 2 was sort of shocking as I'd rather see Nintendo visit other stellar franchises, but is Nintendo and Activision are the only ones guilty of this? Uncharted 2, Gears 2, 2nd Ratchet game, another Onrails RE, Lost Planet 2..I really could go on.

Seems gaming is following Hollywood's lead...Not so sure that's the right path to follow.

4 - you can never oversaturate as long as all the titles are top quality
you cant have too much of a good thing but if nintendos top franchises turn into badly reviewed and recieved games than you have a problem. 5 super mario games in a year wouldnt be too much as long as they are all all around excellent.

4.1 - Kinda disagree....
You CAN have too much of a good thing...and most of the times it leads to something not as good...even BAD. Too much sugar over time can lead to diabetes...too much fatty foods leads to atherosclerosis...too many games can lead to....just that...too much of the SAME thing. Think about Halloween or Easter when you were younger. If you were anything like ME...then you probably raked in the candy...only to have a good chunk of it sitting in a bag and getting old months later. It's not because you didn't like candy anymore...you just got tired of it.
Even if the games are GOOD...or GREAT...it is hard to believe that anybody can push a genre forward releasing rehash after rehash. Plus, critics will eventually get tired of it and rate it lower JUST because it IS a rehash of a title. Not saying that Nintendo are in this position TODAY...but there is the DANGER that they get comfortable cashing in and NOT innovating on the SOFTWARE side.

I was thinking about this as I was playing Rachet and Clank 8 and checking my MW2 (COD 6) preorder while posting my user review of uncharted 2. Since I RRODed I haven't been able to play Halo OSDT or Resident Evil 5 or SF4 so I've had more ps3 time, but at least I have Fallout 3. And I realized - the wii needs to innovate in software and quit rehashing these old titles.

Did you see the screenshots of Gran Turismo 5? Incredible.

Oh the irony.

In n4g thinking terms: It's different when those titles do sequels.

aslong as the games are quality then keep them coming =) im a little disapointed in mario galaxy 2 looks a bit more like mario galaxy 1.5 but maybe it will suprise us, as for metroid other M and the new zelda game im realy looking forward to them.

I can't see how Nintendo's "big three" are oversaturated.

Other M is the first Metroid of its kind since Super Metroid in 1994.

Zelda may not see release until late 2010 or sometime in 2011; that will be 4 or 5 years after Twilight Princess, which was a GC port. There hasn't been a proper Wii Zelda yet.

Mario? NSMB will be the first console 2D Mario platformer in a long, long, loooooooooooong time.
Galaxy 2 will probably get a release 3 years after the first one.

Meanwhile, COD and Madden see releases every year.

You want to talk dipping in the same well, look no further than music games, sports games and CoD. I don't think I've bought a madden game since 08 on Wii, and I'd sell it back if they'd give me more than 2.50$ for it. What am I going to buy with that? a PowerAde?

I had W@W for Wii and it was ok, but Conduit online blew it away.

I don't care at all about music games, they just aren't my thing. But I mean Activision must really be trying to destroy these 'franchises'
I can garauntee that but a week after MW2 releases people will either be returning the game, burning the game or talking about what MW3 needs to improve on. Like that Jay-Z song says "on to the next one"

Nintendo is smart in that the try to keep certain franchises to a minimum 1 game per gen; Brawl, Kart. Though the times they don't, they often times try to do the same franchise but try something new or different.

Would I rather have Star Fox or Wave Race or Pilot Wings or Kid Icarus instead of galaxy 2? Damn Right. But am I excited for NSMBWii? damn right.

Plus I've said this before but I feel TP is a gamecube game with tacked on Wii controls (not a bad thing, and I know you are a big fan of TP so I'm not trying diss you here) I feel the ground up Zelda for Wii is the one we should consider Wii's true Zelda. And if we do that its only 1 Zelda game on the system.

As for other m...C'mon, you see my avatar ;)

SMG vs Wave Race vs Star Fox is so hard for me to call ;) They should make all of them!

Arius -- Oh, no offense taken at all. I love LoZ:TP as much as anyone, but the motion controls WERE tacked on. It was a GC game that got delayed a year to bolt on motion controls. I think it truly did work for most of the time, but those controls felt like what they were...at best, launch title technology.

You're spot-on with music games. If there is any genre that is competing with WWII shooters for oversaturation, music games are it.

...and finally, Other M. What I wouldn't do for more gameplay vids. Team Ninja are such a tease.

oobob -- I'm still holding out hope for Retro's secret game to be Star Fox. What a game THAT would be.

First all the wii haters claim nintendo isn't making enough of their core franchises and now that nintendo has stuff they are getting to release these people say they are oversoing it. These people need to admit that they will whine about what nintendo is doing no matter what they do.

Nintendo demolished all competitors and people are jealous not to mention worried. They are probably worried because it seems that the Nintendo wii is finally hitting it's stride for this generation. This past year has been full of quality releases for the platform and next year promises even more. This is probabloy the core reason why there have been anti-wii article after anti-wii article flooding n4g these days.

It is an systemic response to the upcoming strong titles. I expect more and more of these articles and i plead with the community to just ignore them. Part could be propaganda from their competitors who have alot to gain from gamers missing good titles on the platform. Or they are just average lazy game journalists or fanboy bloggers. Either way, their reasoning is still flawed and self defeating. Enough for christ sakes.

9.1 - Agreed
I love all the Wii haters though, they are amusing as all hell. But seriously the only thing oversaturated is the amount of articles a day n4g allows that bring the same old nonsense to the table. This article excluded as I feel the author does bring up a good point. I'd rather have a new Star Fox than Galaxy 2.

Whatever though, I have perspective, and with all things considered, Wii dominates this gen, thoroughly. When you have to add together BOTH competing systems just to have a "competitive argument" that should give you all the perspective you need. Wii's going to become Nintendo's best selling console EVER in all but 6-8 weeks. That is over 60million consoles sold in 3 years. PS2 was at 40-45m or so during the same time frame.

During a year where Wii is down yoy it is still outselling its competition often times, COMBINED. Also, notice how the only argument haters have is Wii being down yoy after breaking every record in the book last year for console sales. There's far more positives in Wii's favor than negatives, but negative stories generate the most hits, it seems.

Wii sells the most software, the most hardware, competitors are following its lead by shoehorning motion controls onto their competing consoles.

But no one cares about that, let's see what negative, often times RIDICULOUS criticism we can conjure up tomorrow. It's all about perspective and that's what's needed on these forums, and others like it.

There are legitimate criticisms to be made about the Wii and ALL consoles for that matter, but here it just becomes a pi$$ing contest filled with flamebait and fanboys.

Count me out.

EDIT: I'm not so much dissing this particular article as much as other ones I've been seeing on here lately so I'm addressing that observation on this post. I just want to be clear here so that intention doesn't get lost in translation as internet talk often does. This article is not flamebait and is one that brings up a legitamit argument.

"This is probabloy the core reason why there have been anti-wii article after anti-wii article flooding n4g these days."

Shnazz, you have to understand, it's more or less been this way around here from the beginning. Rewind three years and you have people complaining about the name, or what the controller looks like, or the lack of graphical power. A year later, you have all the complaints abut the marketing push for fitness games and getting non-traditional consumers to buy these games. A year after that, you got the seven-hundred "Wii is not hardcore, Wii music is going to destroy the industry" articles, the offshoots of which we're still getting today.

Personally, I think it a bit of a shame that a lot of the people from those days are gone. Whatever happened to gametheory? I rather miss his rants about how he wanted to shoot me and have everyone who disagreed with him put in a concentration camp.

You can't really take any of these things seriously. For instance, I imagine in a little we'll be getting swamped by a wave of 'Bayonetta is outselling MadWorld! Wii is not hardcore!' articles that will ignore obvious differences in production values, game style, and theme but will nonetheless all reach the same conclusion (which they reached back in '06). It's like birds migrating south for the winter -- it's not something they consciously think about, they just sort of do it.

Anyone here who reads a ps3 thread understands that you can't take most video gamers seriously. Core n4g readers are mouth breathers who think "Hello World" is a bedtime story.

It comes down to this -- whoever is on top gets the most fanboy hate.

Last gen, the PS2 was the least powerful of the "big three" consoles, sold the most hardware, and still got a massive amount of hate (especially from shooter fans who thought Sony couldn't compete with anything Bungie made) despite having a fantastic library of games.

This gen, it's the Wii.

Comes with the territory, I guess. If Microsoft "wins" next gen, they'll be on the receiving end of the most fanboy angst.

People can claim over saturation when it becomes like Guitar Hero.

They release those things so much that they might as well start a guitar hero of the month club.

Naturally. Just suck it.

This gen has been gold.
Bwii was good...
Excite truck was crazy fun
mariokart was pretty much the 3d version I wanted along with millions also.
Galaxy got 3d Mario closer to what I wanted.
Jungle beat release was awesome also
prime3 is my fav 3d prime.
I'm looking for a Zelda that makes the old snes gamers happy in 3d.
Resort beat everyone to the punch. Really great game.
Paper Mario for the wii was great also with the adult jokes.
brawl on the wii made me respect it as a fighting game.

I guess all that is missing is the really dark games from nintendo.

Fzero
starfox
giests ?? But they also helped with fatal frame.
Silicon knights was luaghed at throughly by the he gamers this gen. You have to wonder about something though. Have you noticed how many of nintendos best leave them and steadily go down hill.
Factor 5 got pi$$Ed for making a hard game that was said to be slow yet killzone 2 has no problems doing the same. Graphicly no one has out done lair on the ps3 yet from what I've played of it.

I like what is happening though. These guys are shown how dirty their competion really is. It is almost like they where lured away from nintendo and then destroied. Money runs every thing though.

It would be nice if hvs became a first party. If you talk to those guys they pretty much funded the conduit whichmaybe needed more funding yet still ended up pretty good.

I think there is more willful ignorance these days and also a shift in what devs and gamer want due to them both aging and some even becoming devs.

Gaming has lost a lot since the 16bit age. This includes arcades.
