OXCGN's Bionic Commando Review - Like Spiderman, 'cept a lot cooler.
17
OXCGN:
"I love games where I can pretty much destroy the scenery by either jumping on it or punching it to pieces (anyone who has teamed up with me in Fable II knows what I mean).
Bionic Commando has delivered a game that not only allows you to 'wreck up the place' but it also allows you to shift certain parts of the map if you just don't feel like hunting after bad guys."
9.5 / 10

Okay I get that this game is an acquired taste but 9.5! lol
I guess OXCGN is true to their word of having a wide spread of views and opinions. Either that or someone's got a hard on for swinging with Capcom! lol

2.1 - a 9.5?
like...really? it's THAT good? I think I missed the reviews for this game! and considering IGN gave it a solid 8, then this one maybe worth getting after all!

I'm having a go at Prototype atm, but looking forward to getting my hands back on this. I did give it around 30 mins initially to see if it would be my type of game, and it was interesting just getting into the game, so it looks like this will be another game I'll be investing some time into.
Damn you developers, making way too many great games, with not enough time in a year to play them properly.
If you check out Bionic Commando's official website out, they have gone to great lengths with the content, storyline and details that many other sites lack.
You could spend hours in there and still not go over everything . .

Hmm, you have an radically different review to many other reviews, I might pick this up in the future due to my trust in your site due to recent multiplatform reviews and respect for all systems and yeah, Prototype is awesome.

4.1 - That demo had to be the worst I've ever played!
Love BC: Rearmed and then they didn't even give gamers a chance to try the single player of this game.
Capcom's first commercial flop this gen.

I simply no longer waste bandwidth or time on demos - period.
Years ago, the developers had the time and resources to make decent demos. Often an almost completed chapter of the start of a game.
These days, with uge costs, shorter time spances and having to have the team broken up to create the demo, the demos have just gotten worse, not better.
WHich is understandable in the current climate of faster production, more $$ costs etc. I play no mind to anything a Demo can supply, as it is always a pale example of the finished product, and kudos to those developers who refuse to make a demo, more power to them actually. It means they can put more $$, resources, time and effort into what we will be getting, rather than what we might be getting.

4.3 - @Oz
I agree on rising costs and the strain it provides on development teams but I disagree about their effectiveness and demos supposedly getting worse.
A demo is and should be part of any developer's marketing toolkit where it suits. RPG's and entrenched franchises (COD, GTA, GH) are perhaps the exceptions to the rule.
Bioshock's commercial success was off the back of an incredible demo.
I'd argue recent releases of Red Faction and UFC have created buzz and sales for games that were previously overlooked. I'd also argue that last year's Burnout Paradise, Left 4 Dead, and even earlier Crackdown generated buzz and interest otherwise absent.
Most importantly look at the effectiveness of XBLA demos in generating interest and purchases.
But like all marketing, there's a downside for every upside. And there's been stellar examples of stuff ups...
Bionic Commando is just one case in point, and it was not a poor reflection of a good game, it was an accurate reflection of the game's pathetic multiplayer and the inability of the developers to understand their product and audience and market it appropriately (ie the fantastic single player with a single player demo).

6 - 9.5?
I dont think we played the same game.
A 9.5 should warrant something which is either innovative, awesome experience with excellent level design or a good story. It should have at least one of these.
Bionic Commando had none. It was straight out only a "solid" action game and was inferior to its arcade counterpart imo.
I take it the reviewer has not played a tonne of action games and thats fine, but if you're talking on the basis of gamers who have played many games before, this formula is tried and true.
At best a solid game, not great, not bad.

6.1 - Agreed
8.5 I could swallow given the leanings of the reviewer but 9.5 really indicates a level of quality that's only really earnt by the best of the best.
Bionic Commando is not... Bionic Commando on XBLA on the other hand... ;)

7 - I understand
All the hard work that developers put into making a quality title, I really do, but Bionic Commando concentrated to heavily on the graphics, and not enough energy was put in to testing the main control scheme for the game, swinging.
The game controls horribly, and although their are some brights spots like decent visuals and sound, the main reason we play games is to enjoy out time playing them, not cursing at your innocent TV because "Rad" wont do what you tell him to.

7.1 - I disagree
I spent at least 15-20 min on the second part of the 1st stage just playing around w/ the swinging mechanic. Once you master the timing it becomes almost second hand like walking. It really is fun, using the arm to explore and move about the map.
After Unwanted and Terminator, I had low expectations considering GRIN also developed this. But the visuals are at least next gen, the script is adequate, voice acting is actually superb, solid framerate, no screen tearing (PS3 version tested); sure the MP leaves something to desire but the SP is obviously where the bulk of the dev time was spent (thankfully). SP Challenges represent the bulk of the trophies, and I found most of them to be attainable but not all are easy, i.e. grenading 4 guys at once. It's the perfect weekend rental for you A/T whores.
So it is rather confusing GRIN and Capcom would've released that awful MP demo. I was surprised by the game and give it a solid 7.5-8. For all you MGS fans, I love playing through the game listening to David Hayter's voice. Felt good :)

Seemed a bit repetitive for me and the multiplayer was a lagfest with a large learning curve!
