Blizzard, PlayStation Network, and more under wide DDoS attack [Update: FBI now investigating]

Several gaming servers have been at the receiving end of DDoS attacks over the past several hours. Blizzard's Battle.net servers, Riot's League of Legends, Grinding Gear Games' Path of Exile, and PlayStation Network are among those under attack by a group of hackers calling themselves Lizard Squad.

They said Microsoft was next. At least they were decent enough to give them a heads up.

Edit: One of the guys is already doxxed. Hope it was worth it.

Lawboy23529d ago

They found him...where was he

xXSilentXx3529d ago

i think the boy of 14 was scammed by a bug or so he cant be that guy!

thorstein3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

That looks more like a kid who wanted to be a part of something but got yanked in and used. All those attacks coming from China and we're to believe it was just this kid at this house n Ontario?

chrismichaels043529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

All day long, xbox fans tried using this nonsense as an excuse to bash PlayStation. Now it's affecting Xbox as well. Now is the time for everyone to drop the ridiculous fanboy bickering and unite as one cohesive gaming community to show these mischievous online groups that we will not be shaken by their foolish attempts to get attention. Because at the end of the day, the only people being inconvenienced is us.....the gamers.

Lawboy23529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

@ Chrismicheals

What are you talking....stop spreading rumors....this is the problem with the internet now

http://support.xbox.com/en-...

@ enemy

Yeah I've been following there twitter all day because I was worried...I think they said they were going to attack xbox live about 6 hours ago...I can check

@ Chris again

No the problem with the internet is ppl talking about things...when they don't what they are talking about...we were talking about the kid being caught...which you responded to my question with xbox live being down while I am playing on xbox live...that blows my mind....what was ur point

Enemy3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

@ Lawboy: They appear to be taking credit for an oncoming Xbox Live attack. https://www.facebook.com/ha...

@ above: No one's saying the kid acted alone.

chrismichaels043529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

@Lawboy2 - This is exactly what im talking about. The "problem with the internet" is people like you. These online groups are causing problems for all gamers and while I'm asking for the entire gaming community to unite...all you want to do is argue.

M-M3529d ago

@chrismichaels04

He did it on purpose, it's the only reason why he comes to this site lol.

Retroman3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

Did'nt these hackers learn anything from GEO HOTZ case "dont do the crime if you cant do the time"

mydyingparadiselost3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

@enemy
Maybe you shouldn't be posting links to phone numbers and addresses, especially for people that aren't even involved or for someone who is possibly but not proven to be involved.

moujahed3529d ago

The link you posted regarding the X-Box Live status states that Social & Gaming is limited. Although you may be online, others aren't able to log in. Chill dude, we are all in the same boat no matter what platform you favor.

morganfell3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

@Lawboy2,

This is from your link capture at 209 Eastern Time on Aug 25th.

http://i.imgur.com/uHSeluP....

As regards this being a 14 year old it is entirely possible. All one need do is read their twitter feed and it sounds like the comnprehension level of a 14 year old. Also its DDOSing, not exactly an action that requires mature skill.

DragonKnight3528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

HE LIVES IN SCARBOROUGH?! HA, I should go and pay him a visit.

gangsta_red3528d ago

Wow, this didn't even happen to Xbox and PS fanboys are so desperate to try and pretend it did so they can not feel bad about this attack happening to their system.

The point Lawboy is making is stop trying to throw Xbox Live into this mess when it never happened to them. You want gamers to unite, then start by stating the truth and we'll go from there.

Sony and Blizzard should pay the FBI for their services for finding these guys.

zugdar3529d ago

Only if they don't pay taxes. Otherwise, that's what your money goes to.

lodossrage3529d ago

Why should they pay the FBI for doing their jobs that they don't even do half the time while being payed tax payer money?

Clash1153529d ago

I don't think they should pay and I also think the big part of them investigating is because these people made threats towards a plane. I could be wrong.

purely blizzard servers.. nothing to do with xbox live.. get your facts straight before posting nonsens.

sevilha823529d ago

#Masterh0ppa:Did you even read the article,i think it´s preatty self explanatory, limited serviçes not compleatlly down ,and by the way this was several hours ago so it´s more likelly to be fixed by now, next time don´t let your fanboyism and brand loyalty blind you when someone is only trying to help and inform other people.

the attack was more than confirmed by the part of MS,just not as strong as Sony´s,mostlikelly because they already where taking preacations

MS is better equipped to deal with these issues than Sony.

sevilha823528d ago

@Gameplay:I agree, their infracstuture is much more stable and vastly superior, plus the fact that they had like 12 hour of heads start to prepare from possible attack due to Sony ,LoL,Blizzard and others where attacked much earlier, but it´s over now luckylly it will take several months for us to see another similiar attack.

Cheers

It's LizardSquad. Just some kids trying to be big. They're gonna end up just like Lulzsec, everyone notices them then they go to prison and everyone forgets them. On top of DDoSing Xbox Live & PSN, they cause a airliner flight to be diverted because of a phony bomb threat. That takes it to a whole new level. An FBI rep has replied to ShackNews.com saying this is a national security matter. The guy even tweeted Islamic extremist stuff and stated that he wasn't afraid of the FBI. This poor kid is throwing his life away. What's the point of all this anyway? No one admires them or fears them they're just another wannabe hacker group.

TheBurger293529d ago

Good let him. I fell sorry for nobody that gets enjoyment from causing major problems to A LOT of people. Hope he enjoys prison :D
They cause a flight to be diverted? wow what would cause someone to do this crap?

Kivespussi3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

Some Sony employee was on the plain. So they tweeted and said there is a bomb in the flight. Here's a "best of" tweets from the account for those interested

https://twitter.com/LizardS...

https://twitter.com/LizardS...

https://twitter.com/LizardS...

https://twitter.com/LizardS...

Pretty stupid if you ask me. DDoS'ing a bunch of servers is one thing but a fake terrorist claim took it to another level. They just ruined the rest of their lives with just one tweet.

Can't say I'll miss these guys.

Kivespussi3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

Sorry, I meant plane, not plain.

And "some Sony employee" that I mentioned was John Smedley

XtraTrstrL3529d ago

What a dumbass name too, Lizard Squad. Might as well be Penis Squad. That's what they'll end up being dubbed by fellow inmates in State Prison. Considering they'll probably be the smallest, nerdiest dudes in there, they'll be dealing with a whole lot of penal all day long.

Bhuahahaha3529d ago

and probably some inmate there will pimp em up and make him act as their girl

PlayStation Doesn't Need a Dedicated PC Store Launcher

With all the PlayStation games that are now coming to PC, is it time for Sony to release a dedicated PC launcher?

thorstein2d ago

No, and they already solved any need with the overlay that's coming.

Vits2d ago

Unless they are trying to kill their recently created PC business, I would advise against opening a dedicated PC store. It's an extremely hard endeavor, and people, in general, are very comfortable with Steam. Even Epic, with their billions of dollars invested, is still struggling to find a foothold, and they have Fortnite.

just_looken1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

Money is one thing security is another but again millions have 0 knowledge past 2020.

Epic store for years struggled with a shopping cart/account theft/credit card theft

Rockstar launcher/store to this day over 5 years later still has horrific user interface security flaws lost account's and stolen CC

Then you got that activision need phone number oh we lost it launcher

The crown jewel is the ea launcher/store ea app 3 yrs old still has hundreds of threads were people lost games/accounts/game access or just straight up crashes.

Edit" Oh ubi launcher were you buy a game that may or may not be there again or work and the launcher 5yrs old still has no 4K support if you launch it on a 4k screen there is a high chance it will just crash.

ocelot072d ago

Can tell who ever put this together is not all that clued up on pc gaming.

It's just a known fact. The PC gaming community prefer Steam and Steam alone. They don't like different launchers. I personally don't mind them. But majority just stick with steam. Hence why EA and Ubisoft went back to on releasing on steam and why Microsoft release games on steam as people hated buying from the windows store.

The only other launchers that I imagine are doing ok is GOG due to being drm free and epic games due to the free games every week. Sony shouldn't release any sort of pc launcher n

Nitrowolf22d ago (Edited 2d ago )

It literally says in the OP that PC gamers don't like multiple launchers lol. It even mentions Steam being the go to for gamers

Tacoboto1d 23h ago

Title: "PlayStation Doesn't Need a Dedicated PC Store Launcher"

N4G: "Can tell who ever put this together is not all that clued up on pc gaming"

When you don't even read the headline...

ocelot071d 20h ago

I read it and had a brain fart. As read the title then this "With all the PlayStation games that are now coming to PC, is it time for Sony to release a dedicated PC launcher?"

So I hold my hands up on that mistake. Rest of my comment still stands.

Giblet_Head1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

Steam and GOG are highly preferred because of the rich feature set. Ubisoft, Rockstar, EA, Epic etc have all set a precedent over the years for customers to instinctively expect individual publisher launchers to be so extremely half-assed that the majority simply don't want to bother dealing with what is almost an inevitable disappointment by comparison to Steam or GOG. Those publishers and their inaction or general disinterest to improve have effectively ruined any future adoption to be taken seriously.

Einhander19722d ago (Edited 2d ago )

This is just another ridiculous double standard article.

It's like how Microsoft can spend 20 years of making nothing but gaas and live service style games to sell microtransactions, dlc and subscriptions and get praise for doing it, but if Sony wants to make a single game like that every website under the sun is writing articles saying how Sony is anti-consumer or whatever.

derek1d 19h ago

Yep, huge double standard look at the tortured reaction to the ps5pro, websites hyperventilating like Sony is forcing people to buy it.

just_looken1d 12h ago

Wait my xbox from 2004 has avengers gaas on it? wow your so smart

m$ Gaas started with the other companies like sony

Gamepass yes they are deep into that but its still a huge money saver sense you do not own your games then get a service like that.

Now there pc xbox launcher that is trash for years now

Microsoft needs to be guiding Blizzard to be what it USED to be, not allowing it to continue to be the greedy bastardization of itself that it has become.

XiNatsuDragnel5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Okay i will be interested if they become old Blizzard but might as well be dead.

Rynxie5d ago

They will never be old blizzard. Most of all the OG's left from developers to those on the top (even some decision making folks left).

Vits5d ago

Shame most of the people that made Blizzard what they were, have already left a while ago.

ApocalypseShadow5d ago

I was about to say this. How can they be blizzard when they're no longer blizzard from yesteryear?

blacktiger5d ago

Rare was the thing I lost heart

victorMaje5d ago

Exactly. Blizzard hasn’t been Blizzard for a long time.
Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Knightofelemia5d ago

Blizzard is not the same Blizzard like it use to be.

PassNextquestion5d ago

Were you expecting Microsoft to hire everyone that had left Blizzard long before they purchased the company...

Microsoft has let the Blizzard company they purchased continue to be the Blizzard company they purchased.

thesoftware7305d ago

Wow, PassNextquestion,

You fully understand what that saying means, unlike some people on here who just have to say negative garbage talk.

When someone says, "Just let *blank* be *blank*, "they are just letting them operate how they operate.

It's pretty much how Sony "let Bungie be Bungie."

This comment section is full of outright haters, but you have to "let N4G be N4G"

GamerRN5d ago

This site leans so heavily in one direction...

BISHOP-BRASIL4d ago

I don't think people commenting are necessarily blaming MS for anything here, this is just collective longing for what Blizzard/Vivendi was before Activision's meddling.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil9d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19928d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop7d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom7d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor8d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog7d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit7d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 7d ago
H99d ago

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts8d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H98d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop8d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum7d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai8d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville8d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

mastershredder8d ago
