Here's Why Star Wars: The Old Republic Isn't Coming to PS4/Xbox One; New Expansion Announced Soon

During an interview with Shadow Realms Creative Director James Ohlen, who also serves in the same capacity in Star Wars: The Old Republic, DualShockers got some quite interesting insight about the reasons why BioWare Austin's Star Wars-themed MMORPG isn't being ported to consoles, and a new and unannounced expansion.

Because the game almost died on PC until it went F2P, that's what's holding that game together, why waste more resources porting to next gen with more financial risk? If anything, a PS4 version would be the only one that makes sense due to hitting the "10 mil sold to consumers" mark.

well paying for f2p games is a simple thing on pc ,not so much on consoles. sony and ms will probably need a cut too.
that being said ,there are far better f2p games out there
this one has possibly the worst f2p model ever.
the game forces you to feel inferior.
i initially had a sub, i played for a week and had to leave.i started on f2p the following month and the game treated me like a 3rd class citizen.my friends got so frustrated they bought me my speeders and other essentials from their own ingame money.
also my lv 15 char was levelling slower than my lv 30-40 friends .hell the game even forces the f2p players to BUY the sprint feature .i quit and moved on to ff xiv

Baka-akaB3534d ago

Well that often happens when a game designed for subs goes f2p . It wasnt designed with the model in mind and ends up an hybrid mess .

I thought they were making a new one but it wasn't coming out for ps4. As a huge Star Wars fan I really want to play this series but I don't do any gaming whatsoever on PC. Not a bias but consoles have always more than satisfied my gaming needs in ways pc just hasn't. I may have even played the older one if it was re released on consoles. I think it was on the original xbox back in the day but xbox died so didn't buy. I really hope they make a new one for consoles. There just aren't enough Star Wars games for consoles but pc has tons.

FarEastOrient3534d ago

They said they're blaming the engine and tried to mention keyboard and mouse as one of the issues too. FFXIV, War Thunder, etc uses keyboard and mouse on the PS4 so this part of the argument is invalid.

Blasphemy3534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

The engine for the game really is bad and horrible optimized(at least it was when I played it). I would be surprised if PS4 or the ONE would come anywhere near close to running the game with how it looks now. I thought the game was good but it could have been SO MUCH better. The developers intentionally mislead alot of people with the game and it was the reason why the game did so poorly. It's how they would word certain things when describing the game making you think the game would be more amazing then it really was.

SilentNegotiator3534d ago

They probably barely made profit on PC. Spending money to bring it to consoles would cost them money that they wouldn't be guaranteed to get back.

Software_Lover3534d ago

I was all in when the game first went F2P for about 3 months. I had a subscription and everything. Then it just started feeling tedious. I have only gone back once and that was for 30 minutes.

sorane3534d ago

They made $168 million just in the last year of the game so it points more to a very big profit.

SilentNegotiator3533d ago

You know the game's estimated budget is over $200 million, right?

sorane3533d ago

$150-200 million I heard. Which means they made most or all that back in just 1 year. The game is 3 years old so my statement holds true.

Spotie3533d ago

Except, since it's an online game, costs will persist. That's saying nothing about the problems it obviously ran into. Odds are that it hasn't made back as much as they'd hoped.

Why, then, would they take the risk of porting it to consoles where it could see a repeat of its PC struggles?

lemoncake3534d ago

I actually played this game on PC with the xbox controller and it worked quite good after macroing a few keys together. I don't see why it's technically difficult to port onto the current gen as they would be more than powerful enough, it's probably due to licensing issue and projected sales why it's not being done more than anything else.

ShadowKingx3534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

never say never, i never thought diablo was coming to ps4, i never thought the new final fantasy was coming to consoles primarly because of the controls, no one thought day z would come to console, war thunder and a bunch more that are coming from the pc side. so i would not say isn't coming. the fact of the matter is, its possible and if the devs get desperate enough it will.

With Exodus, ex-BioWare devs aim to be ‘a titan’ in the RPG space again

The elevator pitch for Exodus? Mass Effect meets Interstellar meets Final Fantasy.

shinoff2183131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Mass effect 1 was dope as could be. Part 2 seemed dumbed down and on a budget. You couldn't even run around the citadel. You got to choose from a small list of areas to go to like a store etc. I like rpgs that have actual towns that you can walk around. It kinda takes away from the experience imo, and I'll point out there weren't many space rpgs, so there wasn't alot of competition for the crown.

I pray the day I can type out a comment without my phone or this website acting like I'm touching more then just my keyboard fake clicking on these ads, or when I'm typing fast it can keep up.

mkis007130d ago

I remember running around the citadel being kinda annoying after a while. It was cool to explore once but became a slog. The size was definitely amazing at first though.

shinoff2183130d ago

To each they own I guess. Rpgs without cities or a city Ala mass effect are kinda eh. Doesn't make or break it sure but it's a negative in my book.

jznrpg102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

I totally agree with you. I was very disappointed in ME2 and 3. They became more shooters than rpg after 1. They weren’t horrible games but they were less rpg than first game by a good amount.

MrSmiley130d ago

The last great game Bioware has put out was Mass Effect 2. Everything else has been pretty lackluster. Inquisition was pretty good, I guess. Major issue being the over-padding of uninteresting side quests made a lot of the content feel like an MMO.

I think they have one more chance to actually pull out a banger before EA shuts them down.

porkChop130d ago

Mass Effect 3 was great. The last 15 minutes weren't what people were hoping for, sure, but that doesn't negate the rest of the game being great.

MrSmiley130d ago

I gave it the old college try, but it didn't grab me like the others did. I never actually made it to the end before shelving it.
I did grab the remasters on sale and have been slowly playing through them. Might actually sit down and finally finish the trilogy.

Hofstaderman130d ago

I know right? This might be a purchase for me after I check out the reviews

GhostScholar130d ago

All right all right all right! I’m down for this

Knightofelemia130d ago

Until someone bigger buys them up and pushes them around again.

notachance130d ago

this wasn’t made by Bioware, some ex-Bioware devs made a new studio and this is their new game.
