User Review : Dragon's Crown

Ups
  • Arcade beat them up
  • Beautiful 2D graphics
  • Easy to pick up and play
Downs
  • repetitive quests

Bring the Arcade home.

Vanillaware has been rather quiet about their last project, as a matter of fact, it is so under wraps, one might even question its existence. And yet the one that still remains on people's minds is Dragon's Crown.

I won't bring up the controversy surrounding the art style but I will tell you that once you dive head on into the game, it is painted tableaux that you won't soon forget. The games takes you from bleak and gritty labs to forts in flames and magical forests where treasure awaits you.

Ah, the story of Dragon's Crown is one that is as easily forgettable as a Taylor Swift's song. But I'll be as bold to say that no one will buy this game for the intricate story telling.
No, rather, it is the sword to the face "let me get out there and pillage everything in sight" that keeps the gamer entertained and enthralled to see new areas and find new loot.

The areas that surround the kingdom, in which Dragon's Crown takes place, are diverse and breathtakingly beautiful.
Vanilla ware doesn't disappoint in giving us hand drawn 2D eye candy and haunting tableaux that the player will revisit for the sheer amount of loot and the importance of leveling up.

As a matter of fact, loot and leveling up goes hand in hand, being aware of what to bestow upon your game character depends on what level you are, and it gives Dragon's crown a welcome RPG element. The execution of equipping new found loot and garment is well done, easy and painless.
Part of the appeal to replay certain areas for a better score will be to obtain better loot and to level up accordingly.

Dragon's Crown character selection is varied and well balanced. The wizard and sorceress seem to be easy to wield as their area spells can be quite damaging to foes and villainous things that lurk in the dark.
The dwarf and the elf will please damage seekers and those who seek intricate combo making, while the fighter and the amazon may be suited for beginning players with straight forward attacks and the ability to block (for the fighter).

The arcade feel of Dragon's Crown gives the player the desire to come back and play a quick game for those of us who are short on time. Quick spurs of gameplay and easy customization make this game a joy to come back to.
The multiplayer aspect adds dynamic to the game whether it is done via local co-op or online play.
The repetitive nature of loot hunting and grinding may repel some players, while some will appreciate the easy to pick up gameplay.

No need to line up quarters on the arcade cabinet for this one, if you haven't picked up Dragon's crown yet, you're missing out on the Beat them up of the past two years.
It continues to stay relevant within the gaming community and its online component remains strong and vibrant.

I've always had one major issue with the game. It takes forever to unlock the online play. That's the reason I never bought it until it came out with PS+. In my opinion, these games aren't that fun without playing with other people. But for some reason this game made you play through 9 dungeons before you could play with someone online. I think that's just ridiculous. I made it to the 8th dungeon before finally quitting. It just wasn't fun by myself. My friend agreed with me. Since the game came out, I've been trying to understand their reasoning behind this. But that essentially ruined this entire game for me.

Fullmetalevolust3536d ago

I understand your reasoning, but somehow I thought they were only unlocking to those players who had gone through the game and understood the mechanics so that the online play would be more dynamic and rich.
I've played online with folks who could finish a boss in a matter of seconds and others who enriched my experience by being succinct partners in looting crime.
On the other hand, you could also have leveled up with the online component already unlocked...so there's both side of the coin.

Ilovetheps53536d ago

I have no clue how the online works, but I'm assuming it has both an invite feature and a matchmaking feature. I believe they could have simply locked the matchmaking until you beat the game, but allowed you to play with friends. I mean the game allows you to play couch coop from the beginning, so why not online?

Why mention PS5 when talking about PS3

Magog327d ago

The load times in retrospect are unbearable but I did have hella fun playing couch co-op with my gf on the PS3 and PS2.

anast327d ago

Couch co-op is the best alternative.

Rynxie327d ago

Resistance 2 co-op was amazing! I wish they would remaster resistance 1-3 and killzone 1-3 for the PS5.

I have a friend who still has a sealed copy of Folklore. I’m sure it’s worth more now than it was when it released but I’m not sure how much more.

Bought it for $5 at Walmart. I have yet to play it. But I did open it to look at it. Heh.

phoenixwing1119d ago

the game is actually good. I'd rather buy and play it than keep a sealed copy

Indigon1119d ago

Yeah I gave my brother my PS3 for free with a lot of games but I kept Folklore.

Teflon021119d ago

Folklore is an amazing game. Should have bought 2 copies. 1 to play and one to keep

Seraphim1119d ago

yeah I still have a sealed copy of Folklore too. I almost never do this but I had originally rented it. One day I saw it for like $20 at Walmart so picked up a copy. Always meant to re-play it but just never did. I think in part because it never got trophy support[?]. It was an interesting and unique game that didn't get the love it deserved.

I see Trails of Cold Steel II is tagged. Not sure where PS3 prices sit but the PS4 version of both Trails I and II were around $140 as recently as a little over a month ago. Ended up buying both of them digitally then buying III and IV on disc. Shame I kept putting off buying them. Just a couple months prior you could still get them both for about $45 each. Anyway I'm almost finished with II and hopefully be playing III and IV next.

I would suggest using price charting to evaluate the value of a past game.
https://www.pricecharting.c...
value for the game new is 60$

Hawk1986661118d ago

Its not worth much, about £20.

monkey6021118d ago

I want Folklore. I've been trying to find it for some time now. It's one of the only games set in Ireland so I've been busting to play it some time

And wait for emulation and/or till their PS3 dies?

franwex1119d ago

3D Dot Game Heroes is a cool game that may soon go up in price too. I enjoyed it.

Indigon1119d ago

That's one that has been quite hard to find for some time.

Godmars2901119d ago (Edited 1119d ago )

At least you didn't own ALL Panzer Dragoon entries only to sell them all on ebay.

Don't talk to me about seller's regret...

nommers1119d ago

I'm so glad I kept my copy of this game.

Soy1119d ago

Great game, lots of fun - and definitely tougher to find. I'm glad I kept mine.

Teflon021119d ago

Glad I still have it. One of my fav games that gen

PS1, PS2 and PS3 BC right now is pointless. The top games are extremely overpriced or aren't available anywhere anymore. The best that can happen is Sony putting all the games on the PSN and/or PS Now. That way we all can play the classics, with trophies and some optimizations.

Godmars2901119d ago

Pointless, unless you have a 2st stage production model PS3.

One have to get fixed, but still, I've got it.

gold_drake1118d ago

exvuse me
i still play games on my ps2.

Gardenia1118d ago

That's because you only think about yourself. 90% of gamers don't have PS1, PS2 or PS3 games lying around. What do think is going to happen when there is BC and games like Vagrant Story, MGS, Suikoden 2 will be on sale? The few that are will be sold for hundreds of Euro's/Dollars.

Digital is the only option for everyone to be able to play those games.

gold_drake1118d ago (Edited 1118d ago )

ooff yea im only thinking about myself by playing my ps2 games haha.
the whole point about my reply was that, BC is not pointless. alot of ppl still have their old games mind you.

HankHill1118d ago

Nobody agrees with you so I guess you're the one only thinking about themself.

Still have the Neptunia box sets unopened. Every year they get more valuable
