Xbox’s Games With Gold Finally Competing on Even Ground with PlayStation Plus, and That’s Awesome

When Microsoft announced the Games With Gold program for Xbox 360 at E3 2013, it was just little short of ridiculous. Lately the offering has finally been evolving into something that can compete on a fairly even ground with PlayStation Plus, and that's awesome for everyone involved.

Lately I found Gold's X1's games offerings more interesting then PS+ PS4 games offerings.

Competition is good.

That is irrelevant really. It isn't like Microsoft had no power amongst publishers before they introduced Games with Gold. Plus laid a groundwork which Microsoft soon released they had to follow since it worked so well (remember Microsoft originally tried to give away games for free for ever which they realised quickly that it doesn't win them favours amongst publishers). Time is irrelevant in this case

Lets just congratulate the service as it is without having to say it is more impressive because of X or Y (when X and Y has no logical place). It is good Microsoft has stepped their game up

Because not only did Sony have sort out their side of the whole process but they had to coerce and convince publishers and developers to believe in this type of service since it was a brand new idea for consoles. This is a lot of work that can't be understated. It is a lot easier to convince publishers to get on board when someone else is doing the same thing already (especially for the last threeish years). This isn't mean devaluing what Microsoft has done but more about what LOGICWINS is talking about

To your other point. Only 360 games are kept for ever (unless they stopped that I am not sure). Exactly like how Plus works, on the Xbox One ones your subscription runs out you can't play the games (the ones you have actively purchase for no money). You just need to renew it to get back that access. The services are identical

I checked and you are right about Xbox One games. But 360 games are the only ones with either program that actually gives you anything. Xbox One and PlayStation plus are just rentals.

Games with Gold is not impressive. Having a month or two of solid games does not put it on even ground with PS Plus. It means that it has had a few months of solid games. Comparing Games with Gold to PS Plus only shows that PS Plus is the better service by a long shot.

Having a head start doesn't matter as much when dealing with a new console, all you have to choose from is the software that has been released for it, and who among those developers is willing to cut a deal with you to let you give their game away.

All those articles debating XBL vs PS+ over the years were always so heated. I've been saying for years and especially during this generation that hands down PS+ is the overall better value.

This article proves that was the right assessment since it is now being debating GWG is "trying" to level the playing field. For now though, this is way too early to be debated. MS has to do this for more than a month or 2 before we start discussing this. MS also has to expand their offerings with additional content, discounts, early beta access, and so many other categories PS+ off their subscribers.

So for now PS+ is still the better value. Less expensive and offer their subscribers a lot more than just some free games and discounts. So no, GWG is still not even close to PS+ and wont be until MS does this month after month and expands their offerings with more content than just a couple decent games.

Of course you can use it on another console, since the subscription ties to your account not console.

When your gold sub expires, your games won't work or go to a trial mode.

One difference, Sony will only give games that have a 70 or higher Metacritic score. Microsoft doesn't really have standards as to what they give out and sometimes give some not so great games(like Crimson Dragon this month, which has gotten some pretty bad reviews).

Like I keep pointing out, that remark was mostly in reference to what "great" and "high scoring" meant in SCEE advertisements. If you actually take the time to look into the games, you'll see that Sony has given away several <70 games over the years (some being REALLY low if you include day 1 titles like Chronovolt - 44 or Contrast - 59). To further prove this point, here are some <70 titles that were free with Plus:

Dynasty Warriors Next - 67
Malicious - 67
Doki Doki Universe - 66 (technically this score), 62 , 71

Thats not actually true. Malicious actually got an article pointing out it didn't meet the Metacritic requirement when it was offered. http://n4g.com/news/1236009... You're also welcome to actually look at the Metacritic pages for these games and you'll see things like ModNation Racers (given away on 2/24/2014) has yet to get a review on Metacritic since 2012 or that Poker Night 2 was also not updated since it released for Plus. But choose to believe what you want to believe.

A few months from now PS+ offering for PS4 will be better, there isn't much in the way of AAA releases on either platform. Both GWG and PS+ on next gen platforms have large been subjected to paltry indie releases, some impressive and addictive like Resogun and Strider, while others not so great. The program is in its infancy on PS4 and XBO the platform currently doesn't have large libraries of AAA games to do this with and right now, developers and publishers are having to recoup dev cost for what they released on PS4/XBO...

This year, in the fall I think we'll see AC4 Thief and TR:DF on PS+ along with Driveclub.

Here are the FACTS:

1) Xbox 360 GWG games are playable whether you are still subscribed or not.

2) Xbox One GWG games are ONLY playable IF you are still subscribed.

Thank you for linking the article however, this does not support you argument, it undermines it. You argue that you do not keep your GWG games anymore, but using the very source you linked, it states:

"On Xbox 360, the Games with Gold program will work the same as it did before. Games you downloaded for free will remain on your account."

Now if you knew how Games With Gold worked before, you'd realise that Xbox 360 games are kept even upon expiry of your subscription.

i think PS+ is the better service, but idk about on PS4 , i love indies but that's all we've been getting with PS+ on PS4.. buckets of indie titles that i'm afraid to buy an indie title when it releases now, knowing it will most likely be free in a month or two on PS+..
I'm not against free games by any means, but we pay $50 or more a year, I would totally be ok with a big title once in a while like the PS3 used to (and still) gets..

Rentals, PS Plus, PS Now. Xbox 1 tries to be the all digital console of the future. And everyone hates it. Make up your fucking minds people. PS Plus was born out of the fact that Sony just wanted to charge to play online. PS plus was the BRIDGE that made it possible. A nice smooth transition. Plus only became good after the Hack in 2011, before that it was garbage and no one talked about it. I know, I was a early adopter in 2010. "infamous" was the first good solid full retail game they gave away. But it all led up to E3 2013; where it was announced that PS plus was required to play online, that was the ultimate goal of the service. I have a PS3, 360 and Xbox One. I think I've only bought 2 games from a store in the past year. So eventually it will all come back to the original Xbox one reveal. ALL Digital. Hilarious. Too ahead of the curve, I guess

The 2 things you are forgetting is how closed that system was with DRM and checkin's and no ability to trade disc based games.. in other words having the best of all worlds and not being forced into 1 system.

Also, We are living in 2014 not 2011 in which PlayStation plus has proven it self over Xbox live in so many way's and is worth the 49.99 price tag with all the games you get on 3 platforms each month. No one cares if it was talked about it in 2011.. when psn was a free service anymore cause people much prefer if they don't have the money to buy a game that month, they can download one out of the plus library. It think PS+ still has better value even if I ignore the Vita games. The games we already got via PS+ is just too massive! MS wouldn't be able to keep up unless they give 4 XBX360 games each month. Just remember that PS+ sometimes even get crossbuy titles! So the amount of games each month is minimum 6 for all three systems but can go up easily with crossbuy titles.

you are right there no good or bad answer, its relative to each person and to me it sucks. in fact they have given tons of games i like but ive had them all forever already since they are multiplatform games. i want sony exclusives but apparently sony doesnt want anyone to have them

I bought an Xbone last month and was happy to be able to get Guacamelee and Max, but this month's games were just terrible. Hopefully they return to form next month.

PS plus hasn't been great this year, sure. But its been essential to own due to the great content its given me! Have Xbox owners been given mass effect 3? Or farcry 3, deus ex, hitman, metal gear rising, tomb raider, BioShock infinite to name just a few! Answer Is no. Dark souls has been the best title for Xbox gold.

As for ps4 vs Xbox one offerings, just wait till games like infamous hit plus, or killzone etc. I can guarantee watch dogs, or other triple a titles will hit PS plus before xbox gold get it

This is very good for the Xbox users for sure. And the Xbox live have the potential to become even greater then the PSN+.

But for Microsoft I believe this is real bad because they will make less profit in sort time.
When M$ entered the world of video games consoles they thought they would easily make a money farm.
But now they are seeing this kind market is not as profitable as they thought. Not in a short time that's certainly .

PS+ on PS3 is by far the best imo. Games with Gold is 2nd place, then PS+ on PS4. Still waiting on the good games that interest me.

Nothing good has come from the games with gold from what ive seen. Only decent one is guacamele and I already had that on vita. Thing is it hasn't had any good months yet. Ps plus so far best free game this year have to be resogun and don't starve I played but haven't cared for any of the others. When they put triple a games on the service again then we can debate. They both have been indies as of late. Btw this is comparing xbo and ps4. No reason to debate the others cause they are last gen but if you were to ps still would have the better games in quantity and quality.

I don't own a PS4 or XBONE yet, but I can say that the games for gold selection for the xbox 360 seem to be games they can't get rid of. When I compare that to what I can get on my PS3, Sony wins hands down. I also get 2 free games around the beginning of each month, not one at the beginning, another later on. I don't have a vita, but I keep thinking about getting after checking the original retail on games I am getting for free, the subscription is more than worth it.
