inFamous Second Son Left Me Disappointed

Ryan Oehrli from High Score Reviews writes:

'A little over a week ago, some of the writers here at HSR got together and tried something new. Meeting up via a Google Hangout, we discussed our picks for the best games of 2014 so far. Mine was Infamous Second Son, the newest in Sucker Punch Studios’ Infamous series.

I’ve had quite the experience with Second Son. This game was THE reason I bought a PS4. For weeks it was the only thing I’d play on my shiny new system, and because of that I’ve beaten it four times now. I’ve played my fair share, and admittedly enjoyed much of the experience.

But it didn’t deserve my vote for GOTY, and that’s because at the end of the day Second Son was a big let-down. For weeks I flip-flopped between opinions on this subject, but after replaying the Infamous series in its entirety I’ve made up my mind. I’ve finally found the right words to explain why Infamous Second Son left me disappointed.'

Ah, whatever. Keep that opinion to yourself. It left me elated and excited for another entry.

Future_20153565d ago

game wasn't as good as infamous 1

MrSwankSinatra3565d ago

inFAMOUS - Better Setting
inFAMOUS 2 - Better Story
inFAMOUS Second Son - Better Powers

In my personal opinion of course. If I had to choose one overall it would be inFAMOUS 2.

-Foxtrot3565d ago

@MrSwankSinatra

"Better Powers"

Most of the powers in Second Son felt the same at the end of the day. There was only one or two moves from each power which were unique to that power.

I didn't appreciate aswell how the story revolved around gathering powers from core relays, the same moves aswell he should of remembered from the last power. Wouldn't of minded if they were brand new moves.

It was like 70% of the story...finding core relays because Delsin wanted "more powers"...he came off like a junkie.

@future

I liked Infamous 2 best overall but so far Second Son is my favorite title this generation. I played and completed 5 times and twice 100% good and bad Karma.

The game is simply stunning and the effects of the weapons when they are maxed out blew me away. Next time I want a big map, more missions and better side quest. But for a title so early on in this new generation I thought it was exceptional.

I'm hoping the next one will be even better and can't wait for it to be announced.

garos823565d ago

it wasn't as good as iNFAMOUS 2, and the only reason for that to me is the length and slightly week story.

I loved every second of I:SS albeit the short time it took to finish good/evil stuff

youndamie3565d ago

@MrSinatra I think inFamous 1 had a way better story. inFamous 2 story was not nearly as strong.

nix3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

@foxtrot:

it's always going to be 70% story on any sandbox/open game. haven't you heard of GTA series?

Why should he keep it to himself, it's an opinion and a very good opinion if I may add

inFAMOUS Second Son was a disappointment, it was a step back for the franchise and the only thing it did better then the last two was the better graphics/visuals.

Look I know the PS4 is doing very well, I'm glad but it doesn't mean none of the games are "untouchable".

syne493565d ago

Yeah I was pretty disappointed in Second Son. It wasn't that it was a bad game by any stretch. It was just missing something though. It felt like it had no magic to it. The powers were all so cool in concept but for some reason weren't near as fun to use as in inFAMOUS 2. The story was just... I dunno. It lacked the tension and the sense of impending doom that 2 pulled off so well. I dunno just my opinion on it. It was a good game, but it should have been much more.

-Foxtrot3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

In my opinion the only way they got make this story interesting is if they...

<SPOILERS>

Make it so Delsin is actually the real Beast, the one Kessler warned Cole about. Then they can say "Second Son was an origin story of the Beast"...I mean how cool would that be.

Everything in Second Son, through the evil storyline, hints that his power could end up making him into the Beast, especially if like he said he's going to Curdun Cay and SHAKE each conduits hand. Obviously he would of gotten stronger in Kesslers timeline a different way but the time gap makes sense. Kessler was married and had kids when the Beast attacked, he apparently ran instead of fighting him when he was weak which is why he became stronger.

If they did that then I could probably see Second Son in a new light.

For the type of character Delsin is and knowing his backstory...being a slacker with no sense of respect or direction in life makes sense he would be corrupted by power, especially when Reggie, the one person in his life able to make him see sense, died.

I never thought of John White as the Beast, just someone who because of the changed timeline ended up getting "Beast like" powers which Cole mistook for being the Beast.

All John wanted to do was save conduits lifes and knew with the plague humans were doomed, so he was trying to save the people who could be saved.

The Beast Kessler mentioned was a maniac who killed everyone who stood in his way

I don't think they should combine the story line of the first infamous game and second son in my opinion. What I think would possibly make a good story line in a sequel is if they follow the evil storyline of second son and continue that into the sequel. Delsin is the bad guy and we play as his brother Reggie who we thought was dead but ended up gaining powers. Then he has to come fix all the wrong doings Delsin has done. I didn't really like Delsin so he fits in more as a bad guy. But if he is not a bad guy in the next big infamous game than I would rather they make completely new characters instead of continuing Delsins storyline.

InTheLab3565d ago

The author loved the game enough to run through it 4 times. I wrapped up the evil side and haven't touched it since.

Disappointing doesn't mean it's bad, only it does not live up to expectations, and in this case, does not match or exceed inFamous 2.

While I enjoyed Second Son, I wish they would have added a bit more content and made the shard hunt more challenging. Also, no user created content was a huge step back.

XiNarutoUzumaki3565d ago

I loved the Evil path and the ending.
I Loved the power
I like Delsin more than Cole.

I think Sucker Punch did a really good job within the time they were given with this entry in the series. the next one will be even better.

MadLad3565d ago

"Ah, whatever. Keep that opinion to yourself. It left me elated and excited for another entry."

It's an opinion piece . . .
You could have done both sides a favor and kept YOUR opinion to yourself. You didn't have to read it.

thorstein3565d ago

What's really sad is that this guy writes flamebait, and he thinks it's an original concept.

Hello_World3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

I thought the first Infamous was ok, didn't try the second. This bored me to tears and I also just didn't care for the characters. It felt like a really empty, shallow tech demo for PS4. My bro made it a few hours further but he too said he got bored and didn't care to see the ending.

Leaves room for improvement but its a good fun game.

psforward3565d ago

Agree completely, I would give it an 8 out of 10. Previous entries were overall better, but this one was still a lot of fun in my opinion. Love the idea people have of making Delsin the new Beast and having Cole come back.

e-p-ayeaH3564d ago

Or in the next game we could see Cole turning into Kessler maybe?

ErazorDJ3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

Infamous Second Son is a mediocre game with good graphics and good gameplay ....worst infamous series

DJustinUNCHAIND3565d ago

Gorgeous game with super-repetitive side missions. The neon power should have been given last, since it's the most useful of the 4.

GW2123565d ago

Completely agree with you. I was using neon pretty much exclusively until the final mission.

lonelyplayer3565d ago

Agree. I use the neon power all the time just because it's faster to move around the city using it.
I also think the spray controls could have been using in different and fun ways.

zsquaresoff3565d ago

The only thing lacking in Infamous second son is the game duration. Story should've been longer. Awesome game tho.

100%, locked 60fps and still look great all these years later, same with the expansion, definitely worth a look if people haven't played it yet, not the best games ever made but a good experience, hopefully a new infamous gets released

KwietStorm_BLM102d ago

Never was my favorite infamous, but it was definitely a graphics showcase early on PS4. Still plays well with the unlocked frame rate.

SDuck102d ago

Still remember getting hyped about this game nearing release. Funny because I never even got a PS4. Jumped from PS3 to PC so I never played it ahahaha

OmegaSoldati102d ago

Its a good game. But thats it. Congratulations you made the best choice. I dream to have a great PC one day.

Profchaos102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

Graphically It's a absolutely stunning game that still holds up today.

Didn't have all that much depth to it forcing you to play though twice for a platinum trophy a good and bad run it was a little disappointing how similar those were Delsin would be like I'm not doing that for you in a cutscene but the cutscene would play out and force you to do it anyway just as you would of in a good run

I did like the story however it got a lot of complaints back in the day people hated playing as Delsin instead of cole despite Coles story being wrapped up.

Overall though the map wasn't overly saturated with useless points of interest there was some collectibles and things to find but nothing compared to a Ubisoft game.

I think it was a good game if a little hollow I've played it through around 4 times now since it's so short.

Also it's DLC was great a full story expansion

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88134d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183133d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie132d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.
