Signs Of The Times - Crytek's Lead R&D Graphics Engineer Moves To id Software, Will Work On New Doom

Crytek has been facing major economic issues and since its staff has not been receiving payments these past months, a lot of it decided to move to other companies. The latest departure is one that surprised us - to say the least - as Tiago Sousa, Lead R&D Graphics Engineer at Crytek who worked on Far Cry and all Crysis games (including all variations of CRYENGINE) has left the company.

That's nonsense. Crysis 2 was clearly designed from the ground up to be a console-centric game, hence the constricted level design, move to another boring New York City backdrop (or as Crytek put it, "urban jungle", *rolls eyes*), Call of Duty-style multiplayer, amongst other things.

There are quite a few devs who care about PC as a platform. Stop talking nonsense.

Well i can actually tell this is the nail in the coffin for Crytek since Tiago Sousa was the major grafics Engineer,he was actually the man that build Cryengine from the start,this will end Crytek and all future for Cryengine evolution!

Tiago's movements, or lack thereof until now, have been what I've been keeping an eye on as a basis for determining the state of affairs at Crytek. Still, it's not necessarily a given, but knowing how crucial the Tiago-led R&D has been at Crytek for oh so long... well, it's pretty saddening.

Often cited in plenty of other dev's work, as well as educational books and publications, a lot of industry pioneering stuff has come out of Crytek's R&D dept. There are only a handful of other devs that release public white papers in the quantity that Crytek have done over the years too. With my assuming the worst outcome for Crytek here, I can only hope future work doesn't effectively get kept behind closed doors now that Tiago's behind the non-licensable idTech engine. Joint knowledge-sharing has, after all, been pretty crucial to the evolution of the industry.

There has to be talented new blood and it has to be allowed to grow. The ID name by itself is always going to be worth a lot.
