Once a great series of games, now a clone of its clone.

TXIDarkAvenger3573d ago

The newest addition is easily the best game in the series, what are you talking about?

DCfan3573d ago

Im talking about how it went from exploration to straight up 3rd person shooter.

Imalwaysright3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

Spoken by someone that doesn't know anything about the history of videogames. TR was made when 3D was taking its very 1st steps in this industry. TR set the template for pretty much all 3D action adventure games that came after it. While it is true that the new TR focused more on combat and had less exploration it still follows the same template that Core Design set 18 years ago. New TR is a clone of the original TR, just more focused on combat.

Edit

Fact? Is that supposed to be a joke? For TR to be an Uncharted clone, Uncharted would have to be a revolutionary game that did something that new that we hadn't seen before. Naugthy Dog has NEVER made such thing with any of its games. They never made a revolutionary game.

Core Designs did it with the original TR. You know the same TR that set the template that Uncharted very much follows. Also the only game from the TR franchise that isn't fairly linear is TR Revelations so I have no idea of what you're talking about.

DCfan3573d ago

Dissing at me won't change the fact that the reboot is an uncharted clone.
TR is miles better than uncharted so i dunno why they went the action route.

So you're saying that the first TR game was a linear game with no exploration.
Now we know who doesn't know the history of video games.

Matt6663572d ago

I agree with you, the PS1 Tomb raiders where amazing, then they got brought out and over the years it became more action based.

Clown_Syndr0me3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

Those screenshots are funny, as the series progresses, her boobs get rounder. Damn they look dangerous in the original - Could poke an eye out on those jaggies.

Just started rebuilding my game collection after selling them all last year...
Found Tomb Raider 2, 3 and Lost Revelations but not the original yet! Great games.

-Foxtrot3573d ago

After playing on Tomb Raider II and Tomb Raider III it's really made me not like the reboot more. Great game but as a Tomb Raider game....Good God.

Honestly, reminding yourself what TR was like makes it sad why they changed the direction of the franchise into a full on action shooter.

Clown_Syndr0me3573d ago

Simply to appeal to the masses I guess, like most games these days. The majority are shooters/action.

Only 10 years ago, there was a hell of alot more variety, and then gaming went mainstream.

-Foxtrot3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

Shame...because rebooting Tomb Raider but keeping it like the old games would of seperated it from all the shooters out there.

I'd prefer it if they went off the original Lara Croft backstory where he plane goes down in the Himalayas. Imagine the tombs and secret treasure that could of been hidden underneath the Himalaya mountains.

Instead we got an Uncharted clone with Hubs instead of chapters. I really think the majority of people who loved the reboot didn't like or even played the old games.

Kurisu3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

Could be worse, it could be Angel of Darkness Remastered!

EDIT: Oh dear I hope I haven't just planted any seeds in Square Enix's head =p

Drithe3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

Tomb Raider, the original game, was about the adventure. The game came with instructions on how to operate the character but that was it.

There was minimum music that only played when something happened to point you in a direction. I loved hearing echos and the sounds of the game itself. It was quiet and you focused on how to advance through the game by investigating and wondering around to solve the puzzles.

That was a great game. 2 was pretty good. The rest sucked because they wanted to BRAND Lara Croft and make the story about HER instead of the adventure. Like tons of Sony stuff, they OVERHYPED the later games about Lara and blah blah.

Tomb Raider was ruined forever.

For those us who loved the original game, you could have put a monkey to be the lead role and it would not have mattered. The game play was what made the game.

chrissx3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

Tomb raider ii and iii were my favs and anniversary too.The reboot was so laughable, all I saw was an uncharted and hunger games clone.mainstream is killing all our beloved franchises

Kurisu3573d ago

I wouldn't call it "laughable". I found the reboot to be a very solid game and I enjoyed playing through it. This is only the start of her new adventure...did you see the Rise of the Tomb Raider trailer? "Take up a hobby". Hmm now what hobby could that be?! Could it be, TOMB RAIDING?! The first game was setting the foundations, let's just see where they go from here before writing it off.

chrissx3573d ago

I found it so bcos the gameplay was clearly inspired by uncharted, yet they cudnt even get it up to par,the story was obviously from lost/hunger games. It was all just so cliche I rolled my eyes tired. I'm a fan tho and lookng forward to the sequel hope its a great improvement

-Foxtrot3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

What I got from that trailer was

"So they are trying to say she became "Tomb Raider" because of a psychiatrist"

I figured she would of just went on more adventures because she got a taste for it when she was stuck on the island, now it's because she's taken advice from a psychiatrist.

Gee...thanks Doctor Penguin

Kurisu3573d ago

I love Uncharted, LOST and The Hunger Games...I guess I was bound to love this =p

One thing I will say though is that I miss the music from the original games.

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9558d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro58d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot58d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist58d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx59d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188159d ago (Edited 59d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9558d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist58d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp58d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg58d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion58d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.

Looking Back to 2006 with Tomb Raider: Legend - An Icon Reborn

Darren writes: "Tomb Raider: Legend had the important but difficult job of rebooting a series that had lost its way both on the small and big screens. Since then, we’ve seen that Lara Croft is a resilient character and is still going strong 25 years after first shimmying into our lives."
