The Next-Gen Slump and AAA Titles

The PS4 and the Xbox One were released last year in November with the Wii U coming out in the U.S. in November of 2012. All three systems currently are pretty barren when it comes to titles. The Wii U has had a lack of games since its release, but is starting to pick up steam after the release of Mario Kart 8 and several others later this year. Microsoft and Sony’s consoles also have games coming out, but aside from the yearly franchises, we’re not getting much that’s new. What’s the deal? Well, this slump could actually be hurting more than people realize.

More AAA games would be released if more AAA games were more profitable.

Vegetarianshark3577d ago

"if more AAA games were more profitable." I don't really get what you mean by that statement. Most AAA games are highly profitable, not to mention the failure rate in the AAA industry is waaayyyy lower than the Indie games scene. I think it's just because AAA games are requiring more money and man power these days, therefore, coming in less qnuatities than before.

KinjoTakemura3577d ago (Edited 3577d ago )

The upcoming heat will come from DriveClub... The graphics are already generating buzz and hype for the game and the Playstation 4.

PrinceOfAllSaiyans3577d ago

Uh the PS4/XB1 have only been out for 7 months so wtf do you expect ? It was much worse last gen. And the Wii U has a good library with games like MK8, SM3D World, DKCTF, Windwaker HD, and a lot of others.

Chrono3577d ago

But none of those are AAA.

R6ex3577d ago

That's why I'm only buying a PS4 is late-2015 'coz that's when there'll be AAA games to play.

Now, its still PC time!

Looking forward to Dragon Age:Inquisition and The Witcher 3, Oculus Rift titles followed by Star Citizen.

deafdani3577d ago

Dismiss them as much as you want... they're ranked better than the AAA games released so far on Xbox One and PS4.

jcnba283577d ago

"But none of those are AAA."

Haha good one bro.

DeusEx-Machina3577d ago (Edited 3577d ago )

Well most games today are not what I would consider "AAA". The only thing they have is a blown up budget for marketing.

Nintendo however really emphasizes on the quality of their software and don't push things half broken out the door.

DeusEx-Machina3577d ago

@R6ex

I agreed with you, because you mentioned Star Citizen, but practically anything EA related is below my standards.

If I'm not mistaken wasn't the first major year for last gen in 07 with halo, cod, bioshock, ect? The xbox released in 2005 so that's a two year time frame. Thus we should be seeing the new gen stuff holiday 2015/2016?

PlaystationSquuad3577d ago

Nothing is coming out in 2015 for the next gen. 2007 was was the best year in gaming ever imo. We won't see another year like that this generation probably until 2017-2018.

Eldyraen3577d ago

Nothing in 2015? Seriously?

We have 3 potentially great games in February alone (W3, The Order and Dying Light) which may not be your cup of tea but all should be well received from the looks of them.

Then we will also have Halo 5, Batman Arkham City, The Division, Uncharted, etc later on. There are others that are still just TBA (to be fair ones mentioned above are "12/31/15" on sites but that is the normal routine for games expected/announced for the year but have no set release date ATM) which will be just as good or nearly so. We still have several conferences this year and the entirety of '15 to learn of more so it is a bit early to say nothing is coming as it already has a lineup that outshines this one (IMO) and is shaping up to rival the best.

IMO 2007 is definitely one of those that will be hard to beat though. It birthed several of my favorite franchises (The Witcher, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Bioshock, Crackdown, AC among many others and continued older ones--namely H3 and GoW2). It is almost impossible to match it IMO but 2015 looks to be its closest rival thus far.

ReesesPuffs3577d ago

You're joking right? Between Batman AK, Zelda, Uncharted 4, Dying Light, MGSV, Mirror's Edge 2, potentially Red Dead 3, Star Fox, Witcher 3, Homefront, Halo 5, Bloodbourne, and Battlefront plus with more on the way that isn't even announced? You're right. 2015 probably won't be as good as 2007. It'll probably be much better.

PlaystationSquuad3577d ago (Edited 3577d ago )

I still find it really hard to understand why all consoles have bad launches and no games until 2 years after they are released. If Sony and Microsoft know years in advance when they are going to ship their new systems, you would think they would set up an amazing lineup of games for their system on day 1

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

GamerRN3h ago

If they are let go, they can be whatever they want. They ARE 3rd party now... 🤦

Barlos1h ago

Yeah, they're also jobless.

PassNextquestion6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger3h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Profchaos6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto5h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos5h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long2h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

XiNatsuDragnel4h ago

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator3h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg7h ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos6h ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola2h ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
