Lost Odyssey was absolute rubbish compared to tales of vesperia

another 360 exclusive!

DEATHxTHExKIDx3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

I own them both. Both are amazing.

zeroskie3588d ago

weird, i remember playing vesperia on PS3 a couple of years ago.

djplonker3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

I should have said exclusive in the west sorry :P

pompombrum3588d ago

Lost Odyssey was the closest game Xbox 360 owners got to a REAL Final Fantasy experience. Tales of Vesperia was quality too but it's hard to compare games with such different visual styles and systems.

LAWSON723588d ago

"a REAL Final Fantasy" this makes me laugh lol

Magicite3587d ago (Edited 3587d ago )

I bought x360 recently to play Tales of vesperia, lost odyssey, blue dragon, fable 2 and gears trilogy. Tales of vesperia was best out of bunch, gears following.
Basically thats the reason I skip xbox consoles or buy them very late in the end of its lifetime, - theres too few compelling exclusives.

Never played Lost Odyssey, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

LAWSON723588d ago

It is just a very traditional JRPG, very similar to FFX IMO. Since the classic turn base style is far from common these days it is probably my favorite JRPG on last gen, besides Valkyria Chronicles and the Souls games

EdMcGlone3587d ago

Valkryia Chronicles could have easily replaced LO on this list for me. Tie breaker was that VC is more of a SRPG. Both games are fantastic though.

Lost Odyssey's problem was being an Xbox 360 exclusive. JRPGs go to that console to the Xbox brand to die. It wouldn't have been a game that was missed on the PS3.

The other 2 games I'd personally replace with Suikoden 1 and 2 myself.

EL Lanf3588d ago

Indeed, I'd say the Suikoden franchise is rather overlooked, would be nice to see a proper revival. I never quite understood why people (article author included) only give Suikoden 2 a shoutout and not the original though...

Whilst 2 improves upon the gameplay, the first was rather novel with how many characters you could recruit and had just as of a story if not better. I prefer the more tragedy orientated story of the first.

Personally I didn't have a problem with LO being 360 exclusive though. Me and my circle of friends all like JRPGs and got 360s over PS3s last gen and enjoyed it. Not say I'd have problems with it going multi-plat though. There's nothing from with games being enjoyed by more people so long as the ports don't suffer.

LAWSON723588d ago

Yeah... looks at Valkyria Chronicles probably the best JRPG game last gen and sold like 1.18M copies not much higher than .87M of Lost Odyssey. Most JRPGs on PS3 do hardly any better look at Ni No Kuni, Tales of Xillia, and Tales of Graces F they all managed around only 1M units. Look I love my PS3 for JRPGs as much as the next guy but these games are hardly any more successful then Lost Odyssey. There are many other good JRPGs that did not sell extremely well on PS3. This idea that JRPGs sell only on PS3 is absurd, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vespiria, and Lost Odyssey all did exceptionally well considering the low popularity in JP. All of this stems from the terrible ideology of Xbox owners only play shooters, which is a load of crap.

DragonKnight3588d ago

You wanna know the difference between a game like Valkyria Chronicles and Lost Odyssey? One is a Sega game. That should be enough of an indication as to the problem, but let me spell it out for you.

Sega can't market for sh*t. They also don't know their userbase AT ALL because they then decided to put the sequel on the PSP and not even release the third game outside of Japan.

But in the end, every single JRPG on the PS3 did better than every JRPG on the Xbox 360. The market for JRPGs is practically non-existent on the Xbox 360 and Lost Odyssey came out during a time where it would have been a perfect release on the PS3 given that that's where the majority of JRPG fans migrated to, it was early in the console's life, and people were desperate for a good JRPG.

Time moves on and interests do as well so by the time good JRPGs came around, the fanbase was too busy with other stuff.

"All of this stems from the terrible ideology of Xbox owners only play shooters, which is a load of crap."

No it's not, it's the truth. Look at the push the shooter genre has received on the Xbox brand. Shooters are the most played and most successful genre of game on any Xbox console, whereas Sony consoles tend to have a more balanced reception.

Sorry but JRPGs go to die on the Xbox, they always do better on Playstation consoles, and that includes multiplats where the PS version still outsells the Xbox version. Get used to it.

Inception3587d ago

Well Tales of Vesperia PS3 did better than Vesperia 360. So the idea that "JRPG sell better on PS3 compare to 360" isn't far from the truth.

Because, if JRPG on 360 can have the same sales just like PS3, than tell me why we never heard a 360 version for Ni no Kuni, Valkyria Chronciles, Tales of Graces f/Xillia/Xillia 2/Symphonia Chronicles/Zestiria, Persona series, Disgaea series, Atelier series, Drakengard 3, Dragon's Crown, FF X/X-2, or Neptunia?

gamejediben3587d ago

I wish Lost Odyssey came to the PS3 as well. On a purely physical level, I hate the packaging with 4 discs crammed in that case. It's practically begging to be scratched to death.

But I also know that Mistwalker had no choice in the matter. They were just starting their new studio and needed funds. They went to the big publishers and offered an exclusivity deal for money. Microsoft signed the contract for two games and Mistwalker had to abide by the terms. And so Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey were developed for Microsoft.

I'm happy that they are now free to make games for whoever they want. I hope Mistwalker announces their next project at TGS.

17 years later, it still stands out.

I liked blue dragon more. Lost odyssey is the shit though.

jznrpg64d ago

Two of the few games I still own for Xbox360 . I have Magna Carta 2 , Last Remnant but also have the PS4 version so I may have got rid of it and I have the DS version of Blue Dragon. I think and a few others but I forget what they are since I don’t dust them off. that’s about it.

shinoff218364d ago (Edited 64d ago )

Another one I still havent got to try is infinite undiscovery. I read it was pretty linear but I usually fk with tri ace(star oceans are great).

Really my only issue with lost odyssey was the level cap they hit you with throughout the game. I enjoy just relaxing and doing some grinding every once in awhile. Could've atleast given the option. Other then that. Excellent game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The 360 imo had atleast half or more that Gen of being the better jrpg system. I bought one earlier then I normally would have for some, and Alan wake. Japanese devs really got in their feelings that Gen and dropped the ball(thanks Phil phish, cocky ass ign, etc)

darthv7264d ago

You'd be better off playing Lost Odyssey on an XBO or Series X as no disc swapping and it looks and plays much better. Same with Blue Dragon. I still keep my 360 hooked up for games not on the bc list. for everything else, I use the series x now. Just last night I installed arkham origins as there is no 8th gen version like asylum/city.

I love having bc on xbox one/series hardware.

shinoff218364d ago

Darth

When I bought the the Xbox one off a couple worker. That was the first thing indid. Bought blue dragon and lost odyssey. Been waiting to catch infinite undiscovery on sale but I forget to check.

I used to own the 360 versions but I bought these digital. I'd like to track down the 360 ones again but no huge deal. I was actually playing through lost odyssey waiting for starfield to drop.

RaidenBlack64d ago

Is Lost Odyssey coming to PS, too?

cthulhucultist64d ago

The game was indeed amazing. Great characters, gameplay and story!

But the dream sequences penned by Shigematsu were sublime.

I still remember many of these stories and I have integrated in the past in my D&D campaign many years ago.

RpgSama64d ago

I'm not going to lie, I cried on more than on a couple of them

Dabigsiebowski64d ago

Microsoft should have just kept pumping money into these guys. Same with a lot of the other studios... the blundered hard.

Lost Odysee deserved a franchise even though development wasn't smooth

Michiel198964d ago

Am I the only one who doesn't wanna see every good game get sequel after sequel? It was a great game, but sometimes it's better to just make a one off and then create a new universe. Sadly that costs a lot more money and publishers don't wanna risk it, but I would definitely prefer it

shinoff218364d ago

I'm fine with sequels in jrpgs, even in the vain of ff sequels, all new stories and characters. It does get old in other genres though sometimes. For the most part I just game by game basis it all.

FinalFantasyFanatic64d ago

They could have done it like Final Fantasy, kept the title name and just start with a new world/characters, it's not like the creator isn't familar with that.

Concertoine64d ago

Idk, Japan never bit for Xbox despite their best efforts around this era. Mistwalker never exploded either, despite future partnerships with Nintendo whichhad a much better chance at success

BrainSyphoned64d ago

It's not like it has had any competition since 2007. Would really like to own the short stories from it in book form.

PapaBop64d ago

360 had some amazing JRPGs in it's early days, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia off the top of my head were all amazing games.

jznrpg64d ago (Edited 64d ago )

The problem with most MS games on 360 was they didn’t make the games they paid for them and that makes you less money in the long run and isn’t something you can continue to do especially with declining sales of consoles. MS should have been starting and growing studios from the beginning but they went for paid games and it leaves them without the knowledge and culture of making games.

shinoff218364d ago

Good points. Never thought of that like that back then.

Sgt_Slaughter64d ago

Not to mention killing the Japanese market that had all sorts of crazy and fun releases up until 2009-2010. They could have gained momentum on Nintendo and kept that going into the Xbox One era, but decided to "unify" efforts and that all but ended their presents in the country. Now, PS4's outsell the Xbox Series S three years into the new system's life cycle, and the 2/3DS at one point was doing the same.

Fifteen years on, Lost Odyssey is a perfect swansong for the formula Hironobu Sakaguchi perfected

It’s quite hard to believe, but Lost Odyssey turns fifteen years old today. A curious product of the time, it has arguably only got better with age - and not just because of what it is, but also what it represents.

andy85499d ago

Jeez doesn't seem 15 years. Very fond memories of this

FortWaba499d ago

The short stories that Kaim collects/remembers are truly emotional. I remember one in particular made my eyes water.

If you've never played this, try to hunt down an original copy, or emulate it. This game was a gem.

GoodGuy09499d ago

I wish there was a remaster. This and Last Story. Sad these games were released on the...wrong platforms...

kingnick498d ago

Considering all the early tech issues Unreal Engine 3 had combined with Japanese developers working with a foreign language engine Lost Odyssey on the PS3 would have been a tech disaster if it had used UE3.

Lost Odyssey's long load times and framerate drops are evidence of just how hard it was working with early builds of UE3, it's a miracle Lost Odyssey turned out as well as it did.

In a perfect world Lost Odyssey would have launched on the PS3 but I doubt Sony or anyone else would have funded the project if Microsoft didn't.

shinoff2183498d ago

It wouldve sold better thats for sure and maybe dude wouldnt be doing mobile games now
