Yoshida Explains Why PS4's Suspend/Resume Isn't Implemented Yet; Promises it's Still in The Works

One of the promised features of the PS4 which is still missing is the ability to instantly suspend and resume games while putting the console in stand-by mode. Today Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida explained why and promised that the feature is still being developed in earnest.

I'm not desperate for this feature. I'd rather have background and folders first. Anyways, Release it when it is ready.

XiSasukeUchiha3598d ago (Edited 3598d ago )

It would be nice feature though Naruto, and at least Sony kept most their promises anyway. When this feature is ready I'll be ready. Thank you for still working on it Sony.

Off topic: You welcome bro, anytime Naruto so just wait for us alright!

XiNarutoUzumaki3598d ago

Yes it is, but I haven't been that exited for this, I want UI customization so bad.

Off topic: Thank you for reviving my dad!

Seriously, do you just have five accounts so that you can respond to your first post and have a little conversation with yourself?

Gohadouken3597d ago

I'll assume that you do love the manga , so i'll ask . Could you please refrain from spoiling any of it , through lame RP monologues with yourself ?

Thanks

King_of_Nothing3597d ago

First, all you do is article hop in order to be first comment. Now you go so far as to post on multiple accounts in order to talk, and roleplay, with yourself? I'm sorry, but you're retarded and extremely obnoxious

SpadeX3597d ago

If you were a smarter troll, you wouldn't have made the second account's name very similar to yours...

Can't believe I'm teaching you better trolling techniques..

DragonKnight3597d ago

@Gohadouken: He didn't spoil the manga, he's spoiling the anime. The manga is already well passed the part he's talking about but the anime is going slower than a sloth.

On topic: Do people really care about this feature? Maybe it's the old school in me but, I play a game until I don't want to anymore then I turn it off. I can't imagine myself wanting to play a game, and then "oh my show is on" and pausing the game with suspend to later resume it after the show is over.

Just seems like a redundant feature especially with how many games have auto-save implemented.

Gohadouken3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

It's still a spoiler in an unrelated thread and field , for the sake of the most idiotic display of roleplaying . One he can't even properly commit to or do well . And i'm saying this because it's not the first time .

If i were 3 seasons behind in Game of thrones , and some idiot decided to Rp Jon Snow while blabbing plot points , in a subject about knitting , i'd murder him just the same :p

maniacmayhem3597d ago

Nobody cares about a feature until they use it and see how useful that feature is.

If Sony can do it for their system, more power to them.

I can see a ton of uses for this feature.

DigitalHope3597d ago

The feature is sort of there, just not from sleep mode which is what most people really want.

If your in a game and go the home screen and open netflix it will susspend your game to you can resume from where you left when your done with the app.

Why o why3597d ago

Definitely folders first and wallpapers. Resume, although a neat feature, isn't that important to me.

FACTUAL evidence3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

Yeah....i'd rather have suspend/resume. It's pretty much up there in the need to do list. It's a shame people have to have wishful thinking for basic functionality features of last gen. Sony just really need a big update THIS YEAR giving us back our media hub. Sony hyped the ps vita and ps3 to be this big multi tasking multi-media hub, just to kill all that off with the ps4. Sony needs to really get on the ball. I gave them my money for stuff they told i would have out the box. Well, all in all; just a well learned lesson. I'll never buy any console day one again unless i test it for myself, and stuff is actually confired. Don't feel like waiting a year and a half for decent features like ps3 did after it's launch(update 2.40).

Eonjay3598d ago

They said they have hundreds of people working on features. The OS seems like a massive undertaking.

hello123598d ago (Edited 3598d ago )

Its not a troll comment.Sony fans might think differently. But its lot harder to get things out to people when your system isn't build around cloud infrastructure.

xb1, is a cloud powered gaming machine. PS4 is a gaming machine, but its just a modified PS3 really.

Microsoft had lot of trouble updating the 360, due to the limitations. PS4 will have the same issues.

Microsoft rolls out updates every few weeks. It taking a longer time to do the same thing on PS4

Foraoise@ You're are wrong because the x box 1 is linked up with the data servers worldwide owned by Microsoft. It essentially is a cloud powered gaming machine once you're online.

It was designed that way. The xb1 is not limited to just the hardware.

Eonjay@ How many times have Sony fans been wrong about the xb1?

Never see a game using the cloud for game physics. How many Sony fans argued with me for months about this!

I told Sony fans, at the e3 conference would 3 to 4 first party exclusives. How many argued with me for months about this!

Honestly i have been more right than Sony fans and i stand by what i said about the xb1.

Sony has been slower with updating their OS and i stated the reasons why. Take or leave it doesn't bother me.

Foraoise3598d ago (Edited 3598d ago )

Xbone isn't 'cloud-powered machine". It's a machine... that may someday make use of cloud technology. PS4's the same way. Just a lot stronger.

And the PS4's a COMPLETELY new machine. It's been made from the ground up. They didn't take the ps3 and "add" to it or "change it a bit". Troll elsewhere.

Eonjay3598d ago

I'm not sure what you mean by your comments. I haven't had any trouble getting updates! In fact they download automatically. In reference to the frequency of the update rollouts, Yoshida responded yesterday by saying they like to do major updates and to expect those. Basically, they are trying to pack as many features into each update unless its an important bug fix.

SniperControl3598d ago (Edited 3598d ago )

@knws

"Foraoise@ You're are wrong because the x box 1 is linked up with the data servers worldwide owned by Microsoft. It essentially is a cloud powered gaming machine once you're online"

The PS3 and PS4 are constantly attached to Sony's cloud, i have been uploading my save games to there for years, didnt Sony report at E3 that 95% of PS4 owners were attached to the web.

Isnt that what the X1 is doing now?

As for updates, i and none of my mates have complained about lack off or problems downloading/installing updates.

Go back to sucking the rancid teet of mrX.

Foraoise3598d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

@Sniper

I don't think you understand what "CLOUD-POWERED" means. Literally means, "Powered by the cloud". No, it's not. It (will) make USE of the cloud, but it's powered by its own internal contents.

Powered means what "runs" it. What makes it work.

When you're tired of blurting before thinking, and calling others' out, saying "You're wrong!" when they're clearly NOT, feel free to respond.

Baka-akaB3598d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

There is no such thing as a cloud powered machine . There are cloud infrastructures on the server side . The whole idea of cloud is precisely to be usable on any capable machine for various purposes .

So MS want to use cloud computing to enhance their game ? Fine , they could do it on their phone too if it's their focus ... Hell i can't wait your spin when MS does annonce that soon or in the upcoming years . you'll be arguing that those phones are powered by clouds ?

Nothing particularly special about the xb1 in that regard ,it's a choice of infrastructure and design in game development .

I wont address your outlook and fantasies about other consoles , as you dont even know your own . You just project your wishes , and insecurities with lots of babble you dont understand . The XB1 deserves better champions

Foraoise3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

@Baka,

THANK you. Someone who understands. +1

@below (KNWS) because of the stupid bubble system...?! It's YOUR troll-y posts which LIMIT your ability to speak, kiddo.

And Sony's got a worldwide base of data servers as well. Do you even know what you're saying?!

hello123597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

Because of the stupid bubble system. I'm limited by what i say.

Sniper@ cloud storage isn't a big deal. You're just saving game data on a server.

The difference between Microsoft and Sony, is Microsoft, has a worldwide base of data servers, linked to the xb1.

Sony will never been able to provide dedicated servers for first party games or do computations by the cloud.

This will be proven, as time goes by.

Foraoise@ Since you called me on it.

Show me where the data centres are located. Data centres are real places located around the world.

Sony has them worldwide and linked to the PS4. Give me a source, evidence anything will do really.

Gohadouken3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

Ah so the shifting begins . You couldnt win on the back of your frivoleous and careless description of "cloud hardware" , so now you're back to "Ms got a bigger one that yours"

"Show me where the data centres are located. Data centres are real places located around the world.
"
WTH are you even talking about ? At least one was revealed to be at San diego , back when the PSN was compromised and hacked .

And everyone knows MS invest more than others in those . You conveniently forget however , about Azure and the Datacenter , not being solely for the use of the Xbox One or XBL , even if its a big use .The lion's share remains for professionalsand other services

MonChiChi3597d ago

Can I have what you are smoking? It is Friday, I am ready to let loose.

ConfettiYeti3597d ago

Ok, Gaikai is located in Aliso Viejo, California. Where they have a quite a few servers there. I gave you one location. Did you want more?

Gohadouken3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

@ConfettiYeti

Well it's conveniently useless and too easy for both side of the arguments .
he and a few others known entity troll so much they are reduced to two bubbles , and probably soon 1 if not helped by fake accounts or like minded fanboys .

So they pump out a giant wall of text full of crap and unnacurate stuff ... knowing no one can even argue against them truly ... except via mere edits or multiple threads on the same subject . Our time is better served elsewhere . What he asked , he of course , didnt even bother searching , didnt care to .

sic_chops3597d ago

@Knws Sony does offer dedicated servers for their games. You have no clue.

Drekken3597d ago

"Its not a troll comment"

Then continues to say PS4 is just an upgraded PS3. Yeah okay... not to be a jerk, but I'm a jerk.

its_JEFF3597d ago

... some crazy talk happening up there by @KNWS

The real reason why MS updated are so much quicker than Sonys... MS is a much better software company than Sony, hands down. The cloud isn't the reason why... MS has a lot more humans who are great at software.

I am disappointed that the "suspend" feature is still missing, it was a main feature that was touted at the PS4 reveal. they should really higher more software engineers, it's such an important thing, maybe lure a few away from MS?

wsoutlaw873597d ago

omg thats the dumbest thing ive read in a while. What the hell is a cloud powered gaming machine. O you mean it hooks up to the internet, wow! Are you saying the xb1 can update faster because it is hooked up to servers. That makes it every device made in like the last 10 years. Your reasons arent reasons and that nonsense about running physics im not even sure what you are referring to. People like you who really care that much about a corporation and a box really makes me sad.

MysticStrummer3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

"Sony will never been able to provide dedicated servers for first party games"

Interesting claim, since I and many others played on dedicated servers last generation with PS3.

"...or do computations by the cloud."

Ridiculous. The harder MS pushes for cloud computation this generation the worse their sales will be worldwide.

Edit - Damn man I thought you had come to your senses at least a little when I saw a comment from you right after the MS conference and you said it wasn't all that great. Then of course later you changed your mind and said it was, and now this...

KwietStorm_BLM3597d ago

When was that planned or possible?

snookiegamer3598d ago (Edited 3598d ago )

It took many years for PS3 to get the features it has... Sony have done an excellent job so far, taking a lot less time getting interesting features to us compared to PS3.

18 months - 2 years from now, the PS4 UI will be virtually unrecognisable from what it was at launch.

Sony will more than likely shrink the OS overheads to make available more ram as games intensify. What is now 4.5GB of ram reserved for games, will become 6GB eventually, leaving 2GB for the OS :)

@KNWS

'PS4....it's just a modified PS3 really'

You type utter crap. Why troll PS4 articles with your pointless Xbox One/DX12/Cloud propaganda? You're obviously insecure because your choice of hardware must suck! Even Phil Spencer stated eSRAM is an evolution of Xbox 360's eRAM, go figure! LOL

#dealwithit!

D3ATH_DRIV3R_7773597d ago

KNWS is one of mister X's henchmen that troll PS4 articles to spead

Nine_Thousaaandd3597d ago

"Sony will more than likely shrink the OS overheads to make available more ram as games intensify. What is now 4.5GB of ram reserved for games, will become 6GB eventually, leaving 2GB for the OS"

This is true, where as Xbox One is locked at 3GB...Sony wants to reduce their OS in the future as games become more complex.

But I give brownie points to Microsoft for having Suspend/Resume feature already. Hope to see this feature soon on PS4...Sony is hard at work bringing us more goodies to the OS. But I'm sure they don't wanna over do it as they have plans to reduce the OS for more memory use as games intensify over the next several years.

They have done an incredible job so far with the share functions, and now being able to upload and share straight to Youtube...amazing! And Sony will update the PS4's broadcasting options to allow spectators to further interact with streamers as well! PlayStation keeps getting better and better.

Spotie3597d ago

"Things that decrease your bubbles
- Offensive language, name calling and personal attacks on other members
- Pointless comments like the classic "I am first" post
- Trolling
- Immature language
- Posting lies and spreading disinformation
- Posting in all CAPS"

Amazing how often people do this and nothing happens. Trolling is supposed to result in a ban, but...

Anyway, I think it's amazing that people forget that the PS3 and 360 took years to have all the features they've got now. With that in mind, I'm not at all concerned about missing a few features, so long as the most important gaming features are there.

And they are.

The only thing I complained about not being present was external hdd support on the XB1, and then only because there was no other method to increase your hdd space... Well, I'll admit I didn't like the focus on Kinect and multimedia over games, but that's not really something that was missing.

Both consoles are still young, not even a year old; there's plenty of time for the features we want to be implemented. People that make a big deal about stuff like that this early are really just looking for something to complain about.

MysticStrummer3597d ago

"Posting lies and spreading disinformation"

That's a big player here that gets ignored big time.

0P-Tigrex3598d ago

I wand the UI changed. The Tv/video folder is how the "Games" apps should look. also i want offline trophy support.

Grown Folks Talk3597d ago

I mainly hate how it auto adds every game to the crossbar when there's a library section. I agree, highlight games, then have the list load underneath like video apps.

0P-Tigrex3597d ago

They should have: What's New, Games, TV/Video(should include Music/Video unlimited, Live From Playstation, Internet Browser, Sharefactory(should have a drop down for Capture Gallery in the scroll bar) in that order....right now everything seems jumbled. The "Library" app doesn't have a purpose.

I know customization will come soon in the future. I wish it would come sooner!! xD

"Got that one right, Shu!"

Kind of ironic when Sony is focused on GaaS like never before.

Flakegriffin355d ago (Edited 355d ago )

Companies evolve overtime. Sony has implemented themselves in the single player space relatively well. Now they can expand further by doing more all while still giving us single player experiences. Obviously Shu is speaking on GaaS games being the main dominance of the gaming space and if that’s the future then that indeed sucks.

You can have that mindset all while still creating some GaaS titles.

InUrFoxHole355d ago

They have 10 in the works right now.

Crows90355d ago

Absolutely! Man all the freaking gaas games theyve been releasing...wait. Not a single one.

sinspirit355d ago

Did you read? It says "dominated". That word means something.

RedDevils355d ago

They don't want to be Blockbuster, too stubborn to adapt with time.

tagzskie355d ago

kinda ironic when it comes to xbox you xboys can even defeat einstein in explation why its good, when it comes to ps you guys became dumb and dumber..

FinalFantasyFanatic355d ago

How so? They're only after one or two good GaaS games, they're throwing crap at the wall until something sticks, alot of those games in development are going to languish and die shortly after release. They're still predominately focused on their core strategy of great single player games (look at the previous interview where they admit they cancel alot of games).

Bathyj354d ago

God why do Xbox gamers always love the thought of PlayStation being as crappy as Xbox.?

DarXyde354d ago

"Like never before" regarding GaaS is like saying "PS3 is a console that launched with HDD space like never before": it's a very low bar to clear because there isn't much precedent.

I happen to agree with Shu here. I don't think being a GaaS title is a scarlet letter, but I can't think of any live service games that have been great at launch either. Naughty Dog is looking likely break that trend. I'd say two love service titles at a time is the sweet spot. I suspect people can only deal with a limited number of live service games contemporaneously.

TheCaptainKuchiki354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

Lmaooo
People always criticize Sony because 90% of their exclusives are single player games. People say they are too expensive because of low replay value.
And you wanna pretend like Sony is focusing on Gaas? Their biggest games aren't Gaas unlike MICROSOFT.

ModsDoBetter354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

How are Sony focused on GaaS?

They own Bungie and have Destiny but the majority of their titles are far from GaaS.

Why, if you are such a die hard Xbot, do you rush to comment on Sony related articles?

We all know live services game and quality rarely goes together but some of them are fun to play

derek354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

@Obscure, Sony is starting from a place of zero which requires a big initial investment to establish themselves in the live services market.

Vengeance1138354d ago

It's very much the opposite, Shu said this damn well knowing Sony is going hard on GaaS. This is Shu confirming that Single player games won't be effected at all despite them going into Live service.

Extermin8or3_354d ago

Except they aren't really- they have what may be a live service game from Haven studios and firewalk studios, they have another from a second party dev and an fps game with multiplayer focus by deviation games, they counted Gt7 as a live service game but really it's not much different to how recent GT titles were treated, they have the last of us factions, a Horizon multiplayer game in production at guerilla alongside horizon 3, a new ip from Bungie. The rest of their studios seem to be hard at work on traditional singleplayer games that may also have a multiplayer mode or may not. So their live service titles are mostly in development from either new teams setup at existing studios or from acquisitions they have made which really just replace the capabilities they once had through Sony Online Entertainment until they sold it half a decade ago. Only I'd argue their new capabilities in this space would appear to be better and have higher quality talent than it did back then.

Thank god for actual gamers in the industry.

neutralgamer1992355d ago

Shu I agree but right now Sony themselves are working on more than 5 live service games

Redemption-64355d ago

He never said they were not working on any. He said, he doesn't want to see Gaming's Future dominated by live-Service Games. Sony currently has 25 games in development. 10 being live service games, with the other mostly likely being single player games and that is honestly a very good balance

neutralgamer1992355d ago

I agree I just hope their live service games are not simple money grabs and try to do some good interesting things

-Foxtrot355d ago

"and that is honestly a very good balance"

The issue is, whether people want to admit it or not because it's Sony, but once a company gets a taste of that money GaaS games make the chances of them going money crazy becomes super higher

I know what you'll probably say

"bu bu but Sony wouldn't do that"

NO COMPANY is immune, even the best can fall and I really don't want to see that happen here.

The fact people will completely blow that off and pretend it's not even a possibility is worrying to me because that's how we end up shits creek.

They might be fine...they might go too far but at the moment I don't think it's a bad thing at all to be sceptical with the shit this industry has gone through in the past 10 years alone.

FinalFantasyFanatic355d ago (Edited 355d ago )

The thing is most of those 10 games won't even be viable, out of the 10 that actually get released, probably only 1 or 2 will make the big bucks worth continuing support. I think Sony even knows that, look at all the other GaaS games that release and die shortly after. Personally I'm okay with that because I don't want the market dominated with these games.

I'd actually rather the resources go on to making some more top-tier JRPGs, I feel like we don't get enough of those in the last couple of gens.

neutralgamer1992354d ago

Final Fantasy

But keep in mind when those games fail many of the studios are shut and there are layoffs

@-Foxtrot What do you have against live service games. I’m not a fan of live service games, but multiplayer games can be done right just look at Titanfall before EA killed it. As long as PS’s core studios keep making single player games, everything should be fine.

Redemption-64355d ago

Sony said they have 25 games in development. 10 being live service games, with the other mostly likely being single player games. They have more single player games in development

-Foxtrot355d ago

@__SteakDeck__

Urm....that they are a cancer in this industry

That the majority of them fail and the developers have then wasted years on them rather than other things.

They turn developers and publishers into thirsty little money grabbers where that big money is still not enough for them.

I could go on, defending GaaS games is not a hill to die on man, it's really not

"done right just look at Titanfall before EA killed it"

Titanfall 2 was not really a GaaS type of game compared to what we are getting now so that's a really bad example.

__SteakDeck__355d ago

@-Foxtrot Yeah it seems like you just have a hatred for multiplayer games. I’m not the biggest fan of multiplayer games, but like I said they can be done well. Also Titanfall 1 had no single player it was multiplayer only and it’s now a dead game, but it was still good. So yes that is a good example.

FinalFantasyFanatic355d ago

@_SteakDeck_,
I'm still salty about Titanfall 2, it was one of the only multi-player games I actually liked.

NotoriousWhiz354d ago

Multi-player games don't have to be Gaas games. Look at Mario Kart, Splatoon. Nintendo's games most likely don't have Gaas because they're behind the times, but this is one area where it's better to be behind the times.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 354d ago
blackblades355d ago

And? They still have single player games. Domination would completely ruled with live services which Sony should know to still do single player. On a side note they should also do a few 1st party smaller games like indie or AA. By the way is indie a single A game.

Philaroni354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

To be fair, so has many other companies aka Ubisoft for example and many of them they decided to end development on. Just because something is in the works does not mean it will release if they do not feel it will pan out. ATM all of the GaaS we know of from Sony are The Last of Us Factions, and some kind of Horizon (Monster Hunter like) game. Also keep in mind, they do own Bungie, and Destiny and there new project be it Destiny 3 and there new IP will likely be that. So just that on its own is near half of what we can best assume.

Main issue with GaaS now days is that its very over saturated. Keep in mind as well Battel Royal games are GaaS by nature also, hell CoD is GaaS. Halo Infinity, ditto. Really now days unless something is an honest to god single player game only the GaaS term gets over used.

Not sure if many played it (I loved it) Gun's Up was a GaaS for a long while, it was going to shut down till some youtubers gave it a bit of new life for another half of year. We know Sony Mobile is working on things and it not shock me if some of this stuff is targeted to the mobile market.

Right now Sony's biggest weakness I'd say is MP games. With that Firewalk studio from lots of vets they just acquired its quite likely there game will have GaaS stuff as part of it, that is still years down the line. I think everyone needs to chill out some and just wait and see what comes. We have not really got a real honest GaaS from Sony before this or even last gen really... At least as we know them now days. Such a broad term now.
