Mighty No. 9 is looking solid but uninspired (and very blue)

The first proper bout of footage for Keiji Inafune's Mighty No. 9 shows that, yes, it looks a lot like a certain Capcom series, but let's put the obvious comparisons to Dino Crisis aside for a moment and focus on the Mega Man creator's latest game. After a wildly successful Kickstarter last year - people really like to put their money behind familiar concepts, huh? - we've been afforded our first non-prototypey glimpse of the platformer in action, and while it's a video that holds few surprises, Mighty No. 9 does look like the sort of safe, largely unambitious game I might enjoy on a rainy day.

it's a spiritual Mega Man game, that is exactly what people who paid for it on kickstarter expect and want.

the great thing about kickstarter is developers serve the supporters and don't have to worry about the "I know better" media

voodoochild3463615d ago

Exactly. Game developers listening to idiot journalists and dumbass casual gamers have ruined and killed many once great franchises. Gears of War is a perfect example of that.

I would have said the push for HD, realtime/realworld game mechanics. Abandoning rather than further developing basic game genres because publisher couldn't justify the $60 prices for them.

Could not agree more, in my opinion UC2 Mp was possibly the best mp of last gen, it got lessened by patch 1.05 and UC3 was utter trash, all to cater the casual. Resistance was the same mess, great mp, R2 tried to cater to the journalists and bullet points, R3 was a mass market attempt.

Probably the only time listening to journalists was a good thing was Infamous 2, they tried to go mass market with the hipster Cole, and journalists (IGN mainly) went nuts, as hardcore fans did as well, and Sucker Punch listened. To bad ND didnt listen to the hardcore about UC mp.

All in all, I would rather a studio make the game THEY want above all else. That is when you get the most quality (even if it is not some peoples preference). I mean a dev that truly loves what they are working on will produce better results. But it seems after a dev does that and gains attention, the sequels go for the mass market and have less heart. Just a general opinion though, there are always exceptions.

A++ to itBourne on recognizing R:FoM and UC2 as two of, if not the two best multiplayer games of last gen.

Jonny5isalive3614d ago

Yeah I cant agree more about uncharted 2 multiplayer. I bought it for the multiplayer and loved it. They changed it for people that complained on the fourms and ruined it.

+well said @NewMonday

I was just going to say the same thing. How can a game that is fully inspired by Mega Man be 'uninspired'?

Blue is my favorite color :D

It seems like some one doesn't like a challenge. Casual gamer alert! Maybe this is why the media sucks, because they actually suck at gaming.

Lol, I literally said that out loud when clicking on this article.

Only tried the demos for both and mighty 9 looked atrocious. Megaman 11 was fun and polished. Never played both full versions but will see it they are on PS Extra when i get home.

Mostly get my megaman fix playing the azure gunvolt games and spin offs. And Maverick Hunter X on my Vita.

VersusDMC628d ago

Just tried Mighty No 9 again on PSExtra...graphics are atrocious and taking down enemies by dashing into them feels so hollow.

Kickstarter's Gaming Successes Prove Big Gaming Doesn't Know What Fans Want

Kickstarter has allowed game developers all over the world to bring their respective visions to life, while AAA Studios remains out of touch.

TheEnigma3131510d ago

This is very true. Companies like EA, UBI, MS seem to be disconnected from what fans want.

Um I’m not too sure about that check how well those games sold besides the money they got from Kickstarter they didn’t sell nearly as much as most games from publishers (AAA or not).

The unfortunate reality is these days games like Shenmue 3 and Bloodstained are incredibly niche and the only way it could survive is by use of a fan funded website like Kickstarter.

No Man's Sky had the most disappointing launch after the massive hype.

It also had the best turn around of any game.

Today it is basically a mammoth sandbox/city builder/space sim/casual podcast in the background meditative play. Love it right now.

smolinsk1517d ago (Edited 1517d ago )

But you jumped on the hype train without seeing what the game really came with.

Sean Murry absolutely caught up in the hype and talk about future stuff that wasen't there from the start.

But what i was promised before the game came out was an unlimited univers and everybody else was looking forward to just that and nothing else. So he gave us just that..that people could not see the true picture about an Early access kind of game was delusional, it was so clear it was not ready...

CD3, and ff15, maybe shemue 3, I feel are more recent disappoinments than Duke nukem and perfect dark.

Anthem was predicted to be a failure from its beginning especially since the last game Bioware put out was the abomination called Andromeda.
