Microsoft on April NPD Results: Xbox Leads U.S. Software Game Sales

"April NPD Group figures released today showed that Xbox One continues to lead in software sales with the most cumulative units sold for any eighth generation home console platform life-to-date. Combined, Xbox One and Xbox 360 held eight of the top 10 spots on the generation eight and generation seven console game lists in the U.S. And, Xbox One continues to outpace Xbox 360 sales in the same historical time period by selling over 76 percent more units in the first six months on the market.

Xbox One sold 115,000 units in the U.S. in the month of April and has outpaced Xbox 360 sales by 76 percent in the first six months on the market.

Xbox 360 continues to grow its install base with 71,000 units sold in April in the U.S., more than any other seventh generation console."

TitanFall in my humble opinion is the best online game i played since CoD4/Mw2 and the best "nextgen" game yet along with SM3DW, the game is just amazing, flows like magic, vintage old IW/Respawn

Second Son is too an good game, glad to see SP game sell well

no matter how i love online, im an Old School SP guy

a great SP > great mp but online is awesome

Gazondaily3623d ago

Interesting that the X1 is leading in software but not hardware.

"Xbox One continues to lead in software sales with the most cumulative units sold for any eighth generation home console platform life-to-date."

Bonkerz3623d ago

Xbox One has better games which leads to more software sales. Only thing that is really worthy atm on PS4 is Infamous, and its only a SP game so the used copies probably killed it. MLB is a complete mess, horrendous MP, load times are a joke, its just not good.

Kayant3623d ago

Not surprising they do have more retail exclusives and big TF sales. Probably will continue for a while.

I do wish we could get by how much it is leading by.

georgeenoob3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

It's great MS recognizes how vibrant and supportive their gamers are. That's why they're so confident in putting gamers first.

Congrats Microsoft. Well deserved.

Gazondaily3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

I have to say, for all those that tried to downplay Titanfall and how it benefitted the X1, if anything, this shows just how crucial and instrumental it has been in making the Xbox One appear competitive in these tough times.

Imagine if it didn't have Titanfall and got merked on hardware AND software.

If MS continue to bring on the games in this strong fashion, THIS combined with the Kinectless Xbox (now we definitely know why they dropped it), we might see a bitter fight for hardware domination, at least in the USA, at the end of this year.

All speculation though. The question is, has Sony gained too much momentum in the meantime?

tbone5673623d ago

Xbox 360 hitting beast mode right now. 9 out 10 best sellers. Too many people are currently satisfied with their 360. Will move to X1 in the future.

izumo_lee3623d ago

I think the reason for this is that many PS4 gamers may be taking the digital option. Alot of PS4 games are only digital.

I for one have downloaded more games than i have bought physically on the PS4. Dead Nation, FF 14, towerfall, Warframe, Outlast, etc some of the games i own digitally.

Also downloading these games are extremely fast for the PS4, some even you are able to play when it has downloaded parts of the game.

04STIBluByU3623d ago

@ Septic:

Please stop saying games...It was 1 game TF... not many games...just TF...which is a SHOOTER...those tend to sell very well on XB consoles. So just hope you get more shooters I guess.

aceitman3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

@bonkers not correct ,ill leave this right here 4 u. http://vgrhq.com/ps4-vs-xbo...

MysticStrummer3623d ago

"Xbox One has better games which leads to more software sales."

http://vgrhq.com/ps4-vs-xbo...

darthv723623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

Not surprising Septic. When you think about it...that is all anyone can do on the xb1 is "buy" games.

On PS4 they "give" you games with PS+.

@mystic...how many of those games on both lists are 8th gen specific? Certainly not Fez, flower or Rayman legends......

kreate3623d ago

I'm pretty satisfied with the 360. just wish there was more new games to play. so I'm playing old ones, which is also great.

NatureOfLogic_3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

From Neogaf:

360:

April 2006 - 295K

April 2007 - 174K

April 2008 - 188K

April 2009 - 175K

April 2010 - 185K

April 2011 - 297K

April 2012 - 236K

April 2013 - 130K

Xbox One:

April 2014 - 115K

Correction: This is Xbox worst April since they discontinued the original Xbox.

KwietStorm_BLM3623d ago

I'm not making any definitive statement, but realistically, you could buy a PS4, not purchase a single game, and still have like 10 games to play, especially if you include PS+. Maybe that's where a chunk of the difference is. All these people who keep saying PS4 has no games, DON'T EVEN OWN A PS4.

Bathyj3623d ago

Given the popularity on online shooters, its no surprise the TF is leading. TF is very much a game catered to Xbones demographic.

But even given that popularity, and even without a huge mega-selling game, more gamers are preferring PS4.

I dont think the NPD results for software OR hardware are surprising to anyone, or at least to me.

ma1asiah3623d ago

@ aceitman and MysticStrummer,

Now take out the mutiplat titles and indie or arcade games for both platforms, then see if you still stand by who has the better games especially Triple A titles wise

http://vgrhq.com/ps4-vs-xbo...

MysticStrummer3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

@darth - "how many of those games on both lists are 8th gen specific? Certainly not Fez, flower or Rayman legends…"

You "forgot" Titanfall. Much of the list for both consoles is cross gen, so I'm not sure what your point is.

@ma1asiah - They're all games man. If you have to start excluding games to make your point then how much of a point do you really have? Last gen several of those allegedly non-games were legit GotY candidates, and some even won the award, so please let's drop this "Only the games I say are games are actually games" argument.

darthv723623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

@argumentum...

Where is the April 2014 360 numbers? You list every year but this one so lets see if what MS says is true or false.

It's the best April for the XB1 so far. How about we just go with that???

@mystic, my point is people buy a new console to play new games. Not ones that are old and made new again (Fez, Flower). New games released on the 8th gen first. If they were released prior to the 8th then they shouldnt count.

but hey, you like the list so go play with your list. I'm going to go play with games.

Skips3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

@ma1asiah

From that list...

Retail PS4 games that can't be played on Xbone:
Final Fantasy XIV (87)
MLB: 14 The Show (83)
Infamous Second Son (80)
Injustice (80)

vs.

Retail games that can't be played on PS4:
Titanfall (86)
Forza 5 (80)
Dead Rising 3 (78)
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (77)

lol not sure what your points is, PS still beats Xbone in scores for retail. And not to mention in numbers WHEN adding in indies, and downloadables.... XD

Biggest3623d ago

Did you guys not read the releases? Infamous, not Titanfall, was the leader in software sales for current generation consoles. Titanfall sold the most software when combining 360, PC and Xbone.

Muerte24943623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

IF you look at the report. The Xbox 360 is actually leading in software. Everything next gen has PS4 outselling Xbox One, generally.

http://abload.de/img/titanf...

Also "-Infamous was the best selling next-gen game. (As in, in terms of only counting sales of games on XB1/PS4/probably Wii U, this game sold the best if you ignored all other sales.)"

http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

So.... yeah, there's that.
Funny thing is VGChartz, that people keep posting so much, had Xbox One taking April in America +50k. Just more evidence of how off their numbers continue to be.
Skips IS BACKKKKKK!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!

ma1asiah3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

@ Skips

My point is that the number of critically acclaimed games comes down to being relatively the same - meaning neither console is winning any type of war based off of the games you actually buy these type of consoles for. The score next to them is kind of subjective as they are "one" persons opinion in this particular case i.e. gaming journalist etc. So don't carry the same weight at the end of the day as you either agree or disgree with their opinion which no matter what your own opinion would be well neither answer would be incorrect.

I asked to take out multiplats as these appear on both consoles and outside of graphical differences the game you play is pretty much still the same.

I asked to take out indie and arcade titles simply because even though they may offer the most unique and innovative experience, they are not the main reason you buy a four or five hundred dollar console for.

I am yet to find someone who says "man you have to buy console "x" for Rosogun or Max The Curse of Brotherhood etc. Normally the games we get most hyped for etc are the Triple A blockbuster titles that you can't play on an Android, IPad or Tablet.

One thing I will add in respect of your list is your inclusion of "Injustice" yes it is exclusive to the PS4 but at the same time it is a visually retooled port of the Xbox 360 PS3 game for the most part so I am not really sure it actually counts.

MLB The show is a sports game, not really what I personally would consider a Triple A franchise in the same way I don't consider Madden or FIFA, NBA2K etc Triple A franchises. Yet hey everyone to their own, plus to be fair I probably wouldn't consider Plants vs Zombies GW a Triple A game.

AceBlazer133623d ago

http://goo.gl/51Ro2R

Safe to assume a lot of ps gamers are buying digital.

DoubleM703623d ago

It's been that way for a very long time @septic. Xbox owners buy games. Everybody I know have KI, DR3, TitanFall. Not to mention all the multiplats.

OrangePowerz3623d ago

@George

Lol MS putting gamers first, that's the best joke for today so far. You always crack me up just like Truefan1 or powerofgreen. You just should get a youtube comedy channel :)

OT

all the sales numbers are retail so it doesn't include any digital sales and that counts for both platforms. Out of 18 or so games I have 4 retail games and the rest are digital games.

Prime1573623d ago

Does anyone know if npd takes into account digital sales? Xblive vs psn sales would be interesting to see if they aren't in npd.

DaGamingKing3623d ago

Tells me XB1 is where the games are at. Those others out there just need to realise that. Perhaps now its cheaper folks will. One can hope.

ma1asiah3623d ago

@ Prime157

No only sales from retail, so ALL digital sales are not reflected in these figures.

Gee...how did Microsoft push so much software in April?? /s

alexkoepp3623d ago

Xbox has the best games, no surprise. You find a much greater quantity of -$ony fans on this site because M$ fans are busy playing all those great games they buy.

BG115793623d ago

These number are showing something funny.
When MS pesented their vision of gaming, they wanted to force their costumers to go all digital. They public reacted negatively and MS kind of changed their policy.
Wirh Sony, there was nothing of that. They said, you either play from the bluray or the disk.
Guest which of the compagnies sell more digital content? Weird right? Sony seemed to have actained tge perfect balance between digital and physical content sales.

Death3623d ago

It's funny how so many assume Sony sold digital games to make up the differance yet ignore the fact Microsoft sells digital too. I bought Titanfall digitally since it's online only.

NewMonday3623d ago

@Septic

XB1 has more retail games, but PS4 has about twice the games tatal with PSN games that don't get tracked.

as for Titanfall it's actually about people over-hyping the game and saying it will make XB1 the top seller those people are proven wrong, those who disagreed are proven right.

Clown_Syndr0me3623d ago

The only game I bought new this gen is Titanfall, as I preordered it.
All my PS4 games were bought used as they were either singleplayer or I bought them a while after release.
As someone said, alot of people have played Infamous but there is ALOT of copies avaliable pre-owned, as it is only single player a lot of people dont hang on to it.

t-hall7853623d ago

How is that interesting. Xbox gamers GAME. Sony gamers troll N4G

FriedGoat3623d ago

Wow, interesting stuff.
Xbox one has really sold that badly in April that it's being compared to the original xbox? That's crazy.

To think the Xbox360's worst april was 130K (and that was last year). No wonder they got rid of Kinect if they are only getting 115k :(

RosweeSon3622d ago

Well if you've bought the console your gonna buy games surely, specially as Microsoft won't give any away.

Nachoman303622d ago

It's simply a marketing spin, notice it says XBOX not xbox one. It is combined software sales.

BlackTar1873622d ago

lol at that list of game scores

90+ on PS4: 3

90+ on Xbox One: 1

80+ on PS4: 18

80+ on Xbox One: 8

andibandit3622d ago

Someone explain to me why Sony customers would be more inclined to buy digital copies?.

Also even tho they have rougly the same number of games available, the only game i would really like to play on PS is Infamous:ss, where as i would really like to try TF and DR3 on X1.

The only sensible comment on here was some guy who mentioned that Sony customers get some games (almost) free, which is why they havent been so keen on spending money.

Lightning Mr Bubbles3622d ago

XBOX One is leading in software basically because of Titanfall. That's about it.

So.. what? Worldwide install base is everything and for that matter PS4 leads Worldwide software.

Death3623d ago

So...what? I still enjoy my Xbox One and WiiU even though they aren't "winning" worldwide in sales. Some actually care more about games than sales.

XisThatKid3622d ago

This is great news This gen may be the most successful if all this keeps up. Pee in the eye to all who thought consoles were dying.

GarrusVakarian3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

115k X1's sold in April?

.....

Last month it was 311k.

That is a huge drop.

It's also pretty embarrassing seeing them constantly reference the 360 when talking about the X1. This is next-gen now, the X1's numbers should stand on their own. You shouldn't need to mention, and make comparisons, to an 8 year old console to damage control your current consoles numbers.

@bleed

In their March NPD report.

bleedsoe9mm3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

when did ms release 311k number for march ?

edit: @Kayant ya sorry Lukas_Japonicus , did they go back and release that number , i thought they just gave out the overall shipped number , my bad

DLConspiracy3623d ago

Pretty sure that number will rise after E3.

4Sh0w3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

Not really Lukas, last gen sony referenced ps2 sales alot in the early years of ps3. That's what you do, talk about your strengths, 360 is making them lots of money.

Nov 2008 NPD sales response from sony:
"Total PlayStation Hardware Unit Sales in November 2008 Top 1 Million"

"PlayStation®2 (PS2) and the LEGO Batman: The Videogame PS2 Entertainment Pack posted solid sales in November, with 205,944 hardware units sold, a 51% increase from the previous month."
http://kotaku.com/5108011/s...

-Anyways interesting to see how long Titanfall can lead sales even though X1 is behind.

Kayant3623d ago

@bleedsoe9mm

"Xbox One continues selling at a strong pace with 311,000 units sold in the U.S."
http://news.xbox.com/2014/0...

MysticStrummer3623d ago

MS on April NPD : Have you SEEN 360?

darthv723623d ago

Lukas, Ms has been following sonys lead for some time. That includes the release of information. MS can now use combined data very much like sony has been for years.

Every time sony touts their achievements its always using the combined efforts of all their platforms. go back and watch any of their past e3 events and you will see how they combine data. basically saying Playstation (in general) this or that is leading the way.

If people are going to call foul on MS for doing this then do we get a do over to call foul on sony? Hell i dont even think nintendo combines figures unless it is platform related. Meaning DS as in ds, dsi dslite for example.

Kidmyst3622d ago

With the June price drop announcement, May could be pretty low since consumers may just wait for June and after E3. Congrats to Sony and Sucker Punch for the great sales.

Saigon3622d ago

I am wondering, has anyone noticed that the top sale for titan fall was for the 360 and not the XBO. Within the NPD though they list the games, they also place in order of sales. TF XBO sales were number 2 out of 3 systems that its available. Not saying that this is bad but many people are talking as though the XBO TF sales lead last month.

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 3622d ago

This just proves that the xb1 has the better games, despite the ps4 out selling the xb1 atm, the xb1 still sells more games. The ps4 only has a small handfull of half decent games, while xb1 has plenty, and plenty yet to come.

jessupj3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

Or it could be a lot to do with PSN+ and actual free to play games that aren't held prisoner behind a paywall.

You know how many games I've bought for my PS4 after getting BF4 including in my console bundle?

Zero.

Why you ask?

Because I've been way to busy with Resogun, Don't Starve, Outlast, Mercenary Kings, WarFrame, DC:O... I think I'm forgetting a few as well.

I fully intend to play all the other amazing PS4 exclusives like KZ and Infamous amoung others, but PSN+ has just kept me way too busy.

Also, you're forgetting this is the US and as I'm sure you've been told a million times before, but somehow need to be told again, the US does not equal the world.

Good day sir.

HeavenlySnipes3623d ago

I wouldn't definitively agree but I wouldn't say its not arguable

Titanfall is a strong MP game, and unless there are a multitude of people like me who like Killzone, there isn't much choice on the MP side of things on the PS4 (I didn't buy BF4 on the PS4 because of how buggy I heard it STILL was and COD: Ghosts is trash). InFamous is a fun game, but it lasted me about 20 hours

The free to play games are alright, none of them are stuff that could get hooked to (maybe DC Universe but I had already reached near max level on my PS3 a while ago) so my purchase and I'm guessing the purchases the majority of people have made are based on potential.

We all know Sony's first party studios and their quality thresholds that they hit nearly every time. I'm confident that the PS4 will be a gaming powerhouse by next fall at the very latest

kenshiro1003623d ago

LOL, @ XB1 has the better games.

On what planet?

jkendrick3623d ago

Wow all these Xbox can't read or choosing not to comprehend. Infamous outsold titan fall on the Xbox 1. I guess you have to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep hope alive, keep hope a live!

Gamerbynight3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

I wish npd counted digital sales as I know so many people who purchased Titan Fall on xboxone digitally and they do not get counted. I would bet ms sold close to half of its transactions for titanfall digitally. This gen its going to be hard to get true numbers until npd catches up with the times and starts recording all sales. I would think that ms and sony would know what they sold and announce it with added on sales. Either they are not selling as well as I thought or they are waiting for e3 to show the dominance that Titan Fall has shown on the platforms its on considering it is a brand new ip. Either way congrats to sony for moving hardware and congrats to ms on the software side. This will be a fun gen for all gamers on all machines if we can get along and quit bashing one another because you do not like the choice THEY made. The majority of the conversations on here do not belong on n4g and the same with neogaf they belong on the Ny or Toyko stock exchange or maybe Forbes but not here unless were all investors and make a living on the health of these platforms. My point is were fricking gamers and maybe we should have the open zone back as it worked so much better for people who are not here to talk or learn about games but to troll and fight. Just a thought.

Ju3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

Better games...huh...which then is reduced to TF ... which again (considering next gen only) was outsold by inFamous in April.

PS4 has 5 shooters - KZ, BF4, CoD + Blacklight & Warframe while XO has 2, BF and CoD. So, yes, there are less shooters on that platform and less competition. Of course there is some need to have YAS, obviously, because the 'platform with the games' (/s) has no shooters to begin with.

Most gamers just laugh at Microsoft at this point....they get hammered in hardware and software and have been trying to spin that into a win for months, really since launch. Good luck with that. The rest of us are gaming on the better console with the better first party developers with indies and psplus. Oh, and the better multiplayer experiences with more power under the hood. Good luck with all that.

Gamerbynight3623d ago (Edited 3623d ago )

I would say these numbers played a large part in the new sku being announced before e3. Is ms even going to have the ui updated for the new sku to work with the controller like they said by the time this new sku launches. It just kind of worries me as they are working on so many new updates for the one. I guess that is not a bad thing as I do not expect ms to keep the same ui for very long as they never do. They have to design it to work much more efficiently with the controller then it does now. I use my Kinect so I do not know how the controller currently works but I would think it would have to since ms officially cut the cord on kinect being required before launch. They had so much to change since last e3s reversal I am amazed they were able to rewrite all the code and get as much as they did at launch. Hopefully all the new features will still be coming soon as promised.

Wikkid6663622d ago

I'm not going to defend vgchartz... but NPD numbers aren't the total number of units sold. There are some major retailers that don't provide sales info to them. One example in Walmart.

You would think so but maybe not. Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1012d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref1d 20h ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde1d 18h ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville1d 16h ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21831d 9h ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos1d 8h ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref1d 20h ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan1d 19h ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0071d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19722d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Anyone remember xblig which Microsoft removed their whole 360 indie section removing hundreds of games from people?

Zeref1d 20h ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde1d 18h ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19721d 18h ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19721d 18h ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 17h ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier1d 15h ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto1d 16h ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21831d 9h ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto1d 6h ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts1d 17h ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts18h ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic1d 3h ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Could Xbox Soon Become The Next Dreamcast?

Microsoft's future in the video game space is murky right now, so let's break it all down.

ApocalypseShadow14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Not anytime soon. But they're on that path.

One thing not mentioned in the article is Microsoft's money bags. If Sega had Microsoft's money, they would have still been around as a hardware manufacturer. Xbox as a platform only survives because of the money bags. They can continue making consoles for the core and port to PC.

The multiplatform strategy is only the result of arrogance and misguided leadership that blew up in their face. They thought gamers would jump on Xbox in droves if they knew that many of their favorite games would be only on Xbox. But that's not happening at all. Sales didn't increase. They decreased. Why? Because the dumb asses thought giving away these expensively made games in a cheap service would also turn the tide.

Gamers on other platforms are willing to buy quality. They don't need to be handed nearly free games in a service that aren't even finished and sometimes average in their development. Gamers buy Nintendo games. They buy Sony games. Microsoft groomed their base to not buy games. Even the quality ones. It has always been their plan to go digital. But most gamers still like single player gaming. Still like physical releases.

Microsoft's problem has always been that they don't produce high quality games at the same output as Nintendo and Sony. Actually, they should be producing quite a lot more because they're worth over 2 TRILLION. How they don't have more is ridiculous and no excuse. Buying publishers to take away from competition only backfired. Because it still takes millions of dollars to continue to make those games from the publishers they snatched. Their only choice was to crawl back to their competitors to help sustain those developers because Nintendo and Sony platforms were the ones buying games.

Am I sorry for Microsoft? Hell no! They deserved last place for putting in the least effort. They deserved the fallout for buying up the industry and didn't make a single blip on the radar against their competitors where they now need those same gamers they took away games from to support them. Part of it may have been to cash in on their competition. But the result is the slow death of their platform. They may go 3rd party. They may keep making hardware. I don't give a shit about them to worry about it. I only give a shit about the destructive nature of their industry moves that only negatively affect gamers. They could sell and drop out of the industry and I wouldn't blink. Probably laugh. But not blink. They deserve whatever comes to them. At least Sega put in the effort when it came to games. They just had poor leadership. Microsoft has poor leadership and barely makes memorable games. That's a killer combination. And not in a good way.

Cacabunga14d ago

That would be an insult to Dreamcast.. it had a crazy line up of legendary critically acclaimed games.

Crows9014d ago

I was thinking the same. Dreamcast had incredible games in such a short amount of time. It was truly exceptional.

darthv7213d ago

...and yet all those great games were not enough to sway people from the looming release of the PS2 at the time. Sony just has that kind of brand loyalty.

Cacabunga13d ago

Darth

I do not agree.. Sony had even better games thanks to an unprecedented 3rd party support..
DC had amazing lineup but 90% were arcade games..

88313d ago

@darth:
And Sony showed off "The Emotion Engine" and their real time demos that made everyone think they would miss out on REAL next gen 128bit magic if they jumped in before PS2s polygon pushing monster (and early lack of anti-aliasing with a healthy heap of shimmer + DVD playback) stepped up. PS2 was a fantastic system though with amazing games.

That's not true. Just because Microsoft has the money doesn't mean Microsoft can allow xbox to bleed entire Microsoft money. It doesn't work like they. Also SEC will be watching and investor won't allow it. Lot of reasons why Microsoft can not continue even if they wanted to. SEC regulations is expensive.

fr0sty14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Exactly this... Microsoft is a publicly traded company, mostly owned by their shareholders (Approximately 59.24% of the company's stock is owned by Institutional Investors, 7.73% is owned by Insiders and 33.03% is owned by Public Companies and Individual Investors.). Their shareholders call the shots on the business decisions, and their shareholders want one thing and one thing only, for their stock price to go up. Losses do not make stock prices go up... so if the division continually posts losses on hardware, but shows profits on software and services (which has been the case with Xbox its entire lifespan, for over 20 years now), the shareholders are going to grow impatient and demand they stop making hardware and focus on the only thing that has ever made them money, software and services.

When Microsoft bought Blizzard and Activision for almost 100 billion, I knew that was the nail in the coffin for Xbox as a console... as the shareholders were going to expect a quick return on that investment, and when it didn't materialize, they were going to be out for blood... out to force Xbox to sell those games on as many consoles as possible, "and while you're at it, sell those first party exclusives that aren't selling well on other consoles as well... hell, just stop making consoles and sell games."

If there is another Xbox console generation, it will definitely be the last, but I doubt there even will be one at this point. I think the Xbox division planning on it just in case, but I don't think the project has been greenlit from Microsoft itself. The rumors that they have not yet even secured the chips needed from the chip fabrication facilities ties into this.

shinoff218314d ago

While I usually agree with you . Alot of what was said can just also be asked before any of that.

How long will the shareholders wait? It doesn't appear long at all

Babadook713d ago

I think I get your point. Like just because MS has money does not mean they are content to throw it away on a dying ecosystem. Xbox has to be profitable or “what’s the point?”

ifinitygamer13d ago

Money bags, yes, but are we ignoring that Xbox actually makes a profit on games and GamePass? Hardware is often a loss leader, and they're probably making profit 4 years into the life cycle, but games and services revenue have been very profitable while other parts of Microsoft's business is struggling. Say what you will about the quality of those games, of course, but this is kind of a reverse Dreamcast situation, where the console was dragging down the company and put it at risk of shuttering entirely. Killing that console saved the business and allowed it to continue to make games on multiple platforms. In this case, the service is very profitable, as are the games, and they're also double-dipping into Multiplatform to extend this further, while their hardware is just sort of what they believe to be the best for gamers and their own titles (whether that is the case or not...)

fr0sty13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

The issue is, they aren't selling enough hardware to make their exclusives profitable, and now that they've bought half the gaming publisher/dev industry, they have no choice but to go third party to make a profit... and that is making their shareholders take a real close look at their hardware division under the microscope... why keep making the hardware if the software is all that is making them money, and they continually, generation after generation come in dead last with hardware sales?

Look at a game like Spiderman 2... if it had been an Xbox exclusive, with the amount it cost to develop, it would have been a huge failure... simply not enough consoles out there to sell it on. They would have been lucky to break even.

ifinitygamer13d ago

@fr0sty agreed completely, which is why they're hedging by releasing other games to multiplatform, plus they have PC to make up for the difference in a lot of ways, which is why their games are not complete money pits. It brings up the question of whether or not those exclusives would drive sales of consoles, though. Let's say Spiderman 2 was an Xbox exclusive, it would certainly have pushed console sales, though who's to say how much is anyone's guess.

fr0sty13d ago

That's why you can't rely on just one exclusive, Sony has always delivered on a wide range of solid exclusives, even this generation (even if they haven't been strong on the first party exclusives, they've made up for it with third party). They don't rely on just one "system seller", they have a portfolio of them.

13d ago
JBlaze22613d ago

ApocalypseShadow To be honest Sony has more of a chance to go 3rd party because like you said Microsoft has money, Sony does not. Sony does not have games, Only games they have come from 3rd party. Sony has been losing money for years and you. Saying Microsoft has been putting the least effort just proves you have no idea what's been going on. All Sony has done is repeat and recycle, never innovating or doing something new. All Sony has is brand loyalty nothing else and it shows.

Not sure about that. It's been two decades and I still think about Power Stone, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Seaman and others, but I'm not sure I'll remember Xbox Series X/S games in a few years from now... Maybe I'll remember about the franchises that the Xbox brand spawned, but I don't believe that the Xbox Series lives up to the late Dreamcast or even to the Xbox name itself. I do have great memories about the 360 with Blue Dragon, Gears 2 and Lost Odyssey though

isarai14d ago

Nah, sega actually makes good games

Becuzisaid14d ago

No, Dreamcast was ahead of it's time and most still have very fond memories of it that had one. It also had some good games on it even in it's short lifespan. Xbox has none of these qualities.

Profchaos14d ago

I remember it coming out at the time in a really bad place they hit the market before the PS2 but it was during this transitional time when Sony was promoting the power of the PS2 and so many of the Dreamcast games were awesome but often third parties simply ported the PS1 version increased resolution and performance but rarely fully utilise the capabilities of the console.

I think in the end bad marketing done it in and like the GameCube so many people are fond of it now but at the time it was looked at in the lense of the day and it didn't stack up.

Personally I miss Sega in hardware they took risks that many companies won't

Becuzisaid14d ago

I never owned it, and got the PS2 right when it launched. But there were certain games it had that I was always jealous of that I didn't have access to - Sonic adventure, crazy taxi, power Stone, code Veronica, shenmue, skies of Arcadia. I always thought it was a really cool machine though. I've never heard a bad thing about it though from those that had it.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

I only ever saw one Dreamcast, and that was one my friend owned, pity I never got to play it, I wonder what games he had for it?

It would be nice if some of those games got ported to modern systems.

Profchaos14d ago

Oh man sonic adventure on the Dreamcast made me so jealous as a huge sonic fan on the mega drive who also moved to PlayStation 2 I never got the chance to play it back in the day either. The Dreamcast in Australia where I am was always relegated to the smallest corner of EB Games it was kind of a strong first indicator that things were not going well at the time.
