Sony Ranks Second and Nintendo Seventh Between Companies the Japanese are Most Proud of

The Japanese are known to be very proud of their local corporations, but which ones are they most proud of? The business firm Risk Monster sought to answer that question via a recently published survey titled “Japanese Companies to be Proud of in Front of the World,” and Sony and Nintendo are in the top 20.

wait til Toyota makes a Game Console nothing will ever be the same lol but Congrats to Sony for the Holding down that Second Place Spot.

nosferatuzodd3641d ago

indeed Nintendo is impressive as well because they only make video games to be in the top 10 and all you do is video games is a great honor congrats to Sony for placing 2nd

GameSpawn3641d ago

"Nintendo’s result is especially significant, considering that it’s the only company in the top 20 that makes only video games and consoles"

Does the article writer realize Nintendo has been around for over a 100 years? They have done just about everything including making playing cards (their start) and running a love hotel (I'm not kidding). This fact means that the Nintendo name has been known to Japan LONG before they did only video games and consoles.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3641d ago

@GameSpawn

Their primary business is Video Game. Everyone knows Nintendo been out that long,

Concertoine3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

Right lets vote up a company because of what they did 100 years ago /s
All they do, in this day and age, is make videogames. That's all theyve done sincr the 80's. The author's statement is correct because it is in the present tense, not the past.

UltimateMaster3641d ago

Honda > Toyota IMO.
Congrats to both Sony and Nintendo.

Where Does EA and Microsoft Rank for the U.S?

Army_of_Darkness3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

Sharp should NOT be #11!? they should be in the #4 spot where Panasonic is because Sharp TV's are amazing and way better quality!

Parapraxis3641d ago

Army_of_Darkness, you seriously don't know your tech.

My main TV is a Sharp, but to think it's better than what Panasonic manufactures...lmao, son, you are fooling yourself.

Army_of_Darkness3641d ago

@para

Fooling myself?? LOL! naw bro, I have a samsung, panasonic and sharp lcds and the sharp tv looks better than both.

BISHOP-BRASIL3640d ago

@UltimateMaster

Agreed on Honda > Toyota, but personally I would also say Subaru, Mitsubish and Nissan are all better than either... They obviously aren't as popular though, Toyota is a name you can say in a isolated small village in some forgotten corner of the world and people will still know what you're talking about.

ITPython3640d ago (Edited 3640d ago )

@Army_of_Darkness - Samsung/LG/Sony LCD's > All.

Sharp is near the bottom of the barrel, heck even Vizio is surpassing Sharp in regards to LCD HDTV quality, picture accuracy and overall advanced technology.

Both Sharp and Panasonic would never be TV brands I would consider. My primary choice would be Samsung, then LG then Sony.

This is about Companies, not consoles.

Sony is the biggest electronics company in Japan. I find it odd that they are not first.

Drekken3641d ago

Imagine Toyota recalling 10 million consoles because there is a chance it will kill their owners while playing games. Sounds like fun.

Merge em and make the Mega "Sontendo"

sweendog3641d ago

It almost happened but Nintendo didn't want to use disks. They decided to develop their own machines separately and we got the ps1 and n64

lilbroRx3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

That is a total lie. How are you getting agrees for that?

Nintendo didn't agree with the deal for the same reason they didn't agree with the Origin deal EA tried to make. Sony/EA wanted control and dominance, but Nintendo wasn't going to give it to them. Nintendo did help with a disc based system. The Panasonic CD-i. It failed, and they stuck with the cartridge afterward.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

WRONG. It was the backstabbing deal Sony tried to throw at Nintendo.

@lilbroRx

It wasn't Panasonic it was Philips.
Panasonic currently creates Nintendo Optical Disc and Drive. They did since GC.

InTheLab3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

@lil bro and other guy...

Some of use were alive when this all went down. It's easy to rewrite history when no one remembers. N was the dominant force in gaming and Sony wanted a piece of it so they offered up discs.

Nintendo refused because Nintendo was the most arrogant company and hardest to work with. It was their way or the highway. N CHOSE outdated cartridges over discs and it cost them dearly...

It's the same reason why EA has always struggled with Nintendo.

Everyone is the badguy and Nintendo does no wrong....what a crock of s***.

choujij3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

Wow. How are so many of you so ignorant? Sony was developing the CD addon for the SNES (actually called the PlayStation). They went back and forth with Nintendo for a while on the design, but ultimately Nintendo canceled the project because Sega's SegaCD was not commercially successful. Before cancelling it, Nintendo was in negotiations with Phillips to make the cd addon instead (albeit different than Sony's design) and terminated their agreement with Sony. This pissed off Sony, since all their time and engineering had gone to waste. So rather than abort the whole thing, they continued forward and made the PlayStation as a standalone console to compete with Nintendo and Sega. This had nothing to do with Nintendo releasing a cartridge based N64.

Source: http://classicgames.about.c...

N4g_null3641d ago

Wow no one remembers sony wanting to own nintendo ip? Basically making nintendo a 1st party to sony?

That was ultimately the problem in the deal. Had this went thur little big planet would have been numb lol.

Sure nintendo was hard to work with if you produced crap and carts costed an arm and a leg compared to slow bigger cds.

Nec and sega had cd based systems out along with the Pippin by guess who!

I was there during a lot of that. Sony did see it as a betrayal because they wanted in on Nintendo powerhouse and knew they where bigger. Sony had worked with Nintendo for the sound processor in the snes. The decision came at an E3 of all places. Phillips was a laughing stock at the end. Because they wanted a similar deal as sony. Nintendo effect lyrics let them borrow zelda and the worst zelda ever was made lol.

so sony wagged war against nintendo by making every thing cheaper for developers and even paying for exclusives by offering media deals for certain companies. This is where the Konami and cap come and EAs made most of their money.

After years of basically paying their way into gaming ms notices this. Unfortunately ms already had a legion of people hating windows and strong arm tactics. By the ps3 the revenge had run its course and the other products that sony made suffered ken was fired and now we sit here looking at the ps4 while sony is selling parts of it self off in order to stay afloat.

Had sony offered nintendo a better deal ms would have been decimated. Nintendo does just fine working with a bunch of different companies for disks, cpus ibm, ati now amd. None of those companies reacted like sony did they are bigger.

Yet sony is on the ropes now and Nintendo have had conservative success and can take another lose. Only ms can afford to pay their way into gaming. .. due to windows.

In the end nintendo did the right thing. Their was even a book wrote about the ps3 disaster.

Clogmaster3641d ago

Cartridges were expensive. CDs were cheaper, 3rd parties didn't want to pay for the cost of having their game span around 17 cartridges (Squaresoft FF7).

What sony should do is sell fo everything except gaming division,mobile/tablet division and tv division. and ofcourse stay in the entertainment division.

Idba3641d ago

I kinda agree with you there. Those divisions are Sony' best divisions. Plus the Mobile/tablet, Tv, Playstation and Entertainment divisions have blown up lately. But i also think they should keep their camera divisions, its been doing well lately and soon the first 4k handycam (made by Sony) will come to the consumer market.

Moe-Gunz3641d ago

The TV division is killing them. Their TVs are priced too high and being dominated by Samsung and LG.

Playstation, Movies, and Mobile I agree with.

Idba3641d ago

@Moe-Gunz No its not. The last years models might have been a little overpriced, but they were some of the best high end tv's on the market. Both for tv/movies and gaming. And now with their 2014 linup that is going to be PSNOW compatible its doing really well.

N4g_null3641d ago

Whatever.... the contrast and pixel density is just plain better on the LG and samsung. I'm looking at 4k or udh and again sony is still behind. Hey but maybe you think they are better... Unfortunately the market doesn't. Sony use to make the best now they don't. In fact it doesn't even seem like they are trying.

xpressyoself3641d ago

I was under the impression they sold their tv division already. And also the computer/tablet

prodg523641d ago

They didn't sell the division they just spun it off into a separate company (still owned by sony) so that it doesn't show up on financial reports.

xpressyoself3641d ago

Ah my mistake. Makes the balance sheet look better while still eating all the losses. Fedex does the same thing with their FedEx Office brand

Geobros3641d ago

gedden73641d ago

Sooooooooooo what do they know?

HeWhoWalks3641d ago

Yes, a , still, multi-billion dollar company is about to go bankrupt. /s The question should be: "what do YOU know"?

OT: Congrats to both companies! If not for them, I wouldn't be the gamer I am today (sprinkled with a lot of Sega as well).

lilbroRx3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

This above post is what you called blind fanboyism as the one right under you points out. Sony has been losing ridiculous amounts of money.

Nintendo is now worth more than Sony moreso because of how much Sony has lost than how much Nintendo has gained. Despite Nintendo posting some losses, they are still losing no where near as much as Sony.

HeWhoWalks3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

@ lilbroRx: "Blind fanboyism" insults are ironic coming from you.

In the real world, Sony isn't going bankrupt, even if their situation isn't the greatest right now. Also, I'm not sure why you felt the need to remind me of their financial situation vs Nintendo's, but then, I can already suspect why that irrelevance was brought up.

Tell you what, if you can actually give me a detailed account of this impending bankruptcy, I'm all ears.

so sony is bleeding billions and that is just an estimate. People are jumping ship. 4kbluray is a still birth right now. All sony has is the ps4. It's like everyone knows except the gaming community. They have been losing money since the r and d of the ps3.

HeWhoWalks3641d ago (Edited 3641d ago )

@ scissor: I never denied that they are having problems, but if you're going to defend the notion that they are going bankrupt, you need to show me just how that is happening. Losing money doesn't simply equate to going bankrupt.

If you think they are going bankrupt, then you must also expect their current bright spots, like the PS4, to be discontinued soon. Yes?

http://www.forbes.com/compa...

Since we are on the negative train today, I'll just provide that to you. A consumer electronics company worth approx. $17.6B isn't going bankrupt anytime soon.

fonger083641d ago

@HeWhoWalks while I agree that I don't think Sony will go bankrupt, because believe they are put in that group "too big to fail" category, and would be bailed out. However you look at their recent MarketCap the conclusion is pretty simple... time is running real thin before the Japanese gov could take over.
2011 36Billion 2012 18billion 2013 17billion
For Comparison Nintendo
2011 37Billion 2012 18billion 2013 17billion
For all the doom and gloom we put on Nintendo, I think it's only fair to look at Sony in the same light.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1016d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref5d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde5d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19725d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville5d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21835d ago

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref5d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan5d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0074d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19725d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref5d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde5d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19725d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19725d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier5d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto5d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21835d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts5d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts4d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic4d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
