Mutant Football League is back! We talk with Michael Mendheim about the game at C2E2 2014

TechRaptor - Mutant League Football, originally produced by 3DO, is a game that still inspires nostalgia across a few generations of gamers. Released in 1993 the game took a very different approach to the sport of football, offering you both sport and war games. You took to the field with your team of mutants, playing the sport of football – all while attacking your enemies, avoiding the traps on the field (land mines, toxic waste, and more!), running plays, and “nasty audibles” to maim or take out your opponent. The game spawned a toy line and TV show that became quite popular, but due to bankruptcy 3DO was not able to take the game any further. Recently, the game came back into the spotlight when Michael Mendheim (the original lead designer) and his company Digital Dreams Entertainment began working on a new iteration of the series – Mutant Football League.

I'm glad this game is getting made. Lots of good memories playing the game on the genesis!

He'll yeah man, many good memories! I remember the first time I saw one of the linemen fart....it was the coolest thing in a game!

I used to rent this and Mutant league hockey all the time back in the day.

I thought EA still having the NFL license releasing the same game year in year out with minimal improvement constituted the mutant football league. Am I mistaken?

Rivitur3641d ago

This doesn't have anything to do with the NFL brand though this is football in general which no one owns the rights to.

medman3641d ago

I know... I was calling EA mutants by proxy...just messing around.

YES!!! I loved Mutant League Football on Genesis.

Bones Jackson!

Kill the QB

The robot team with the QB that had a jet pack and could launch himself over the line for a QB sneak.

Love it! Can't wait. Hopefully it doesn't suck.

I loved this game, along with ML Hockey, but man the Kickstarter they tried looked really bad. I would love nothing more than to have a redone version of this classic but I don't think this game is going to be what we want.

DBPG: Mutant Football League Review (XboxONE)

After two Kickstarter campaigns, we finally received the spiritual successor to Mutant League Football on the Sega Genesis. With a fun yet simple control, this charming throwback does its job well.

Graphics are pretty good for a low budget game. The 6 different character types all have a lot of personality and the stadium graphics get the job done. The commentary is fantastic and the voice overs are very funny, but after a few hours you have heard basically everything.

Control is simple yet nostalgia as anyone who played genesis era madden or Blitz will feel right at home. Same goes for the gameplay, and the added dynasty mode and multiple online functions ensures there is plenty of reason to come back.
