Why the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis are a lot like the PS4 and Xbox One - Blogs - GameFocus

The video game press and blogosphere didn’t really know what to make of the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One when they were announced last year. Most of this confusion seemed to stem from the fact that no one really knew for sure if these next-generation consoles would offer the player anything new. Yes, there would be better graphics, better online functionality, a better multimedia experience, and a better controller, but would that be it?

Because the PS4 has Blast Processing and the Xbox One doesn't.

randomass1713670d ago

In other words, both are great but one of them has an edge on the other on a technical level. Sounds about right, actually...

ShinMaster3669d ago (Edited 3669d ago )

If you want to compare the PS4 and Xbox One with SNES and Genesis, then let's look at it this way...
the Xbox One has a somewhat slightly faster CPU, kinda like the Genesis did with "Blast Processing". But everything else, like the PS4, was better on the SNES (resolution, colors, sprites).

Honestly though, they're not really comparable. The author didn't make accurate comparisons.

ExplosionSauce3669d ago

Cloud processing is the new Blast processing.

Except Blast processing was more tangible and wasn't dependent on any external variables because it was built into the hardware.

pixelsword3669d ago

@ shin

That, and shouldn't the title be the other way around, chronologically speaking?

Army_of_Darkness3669d ago

Snes= ps4
Genesis= xbone
Wiiu= gameboy

mochachino3669d ago

@ armyofdarkness

Wii U = Turbographix 16

miyamoto3669d ago

Actually PS4 vs Xbox One is nowhere like the SNES and the Sega Genesis.

Its the PS3=SNES vs Xbox 360=Genesis!

(Altough the 360 does not hold a candle to the mighty Genesis even today.)

1. PS3 & SNES launched One Year after the competition 360 & Genesis

2. PS3& SNES hardware is more powerful than 360 & Genesis

3. PS3 & SNES outsold the 360 & Genesis during their lifetime.

The MAJOR difference between them generations is this:
SNES & Genesis were both maxed out by developers to their fullest potential unlike the PS3 & 360 generation M$ have this dirty parity clause politics that prevented multi-platform games that dragged the PS3 versions down to 360 levels in terms of graphics fidelity.

andrewsqual3669d ago

Except the Snes launched TWO YEARS after the Genesis and the PS4 launched before Xbox One.

Docknoss3669d ago

Yea it's called DirectX 12 and cloud computing

A more accurate comparative would be the saturn and PS1 instead of the genesis and snes.

XB1 would be like the saturn. $100 more expensive and slightly underpowered than the competition.

Yet anyone who remembers that generation knows that both platforms performed very well in respected fields of gaming. We can look back on that time with great fondness and recall the quality games like ape escape and nights as well as many others.

Shmups, fighters, racers....both platforms had their strength titles and weakness titles but in the end the newcomer prevailed and the veteran withdrew. The focus had shifted from the traditional views of gaming to something new and fresh and really helped propel gaming into another light that has not dimmed ever since.

voodoochild3463669d ago

The Saturn was actually much stronger than the ps1 except in one crucial area. It was horrible at 3d. Sega built the ultimate fighting game machine but underestimated the leap to 3d.

No_Limit3669d ago

"Because the PS4 has Blast Processing and the Xbox One doesn't"

That don't make sense as the SNES is a more powerful system than the Genesis.

pixelsword3669d ago

Circle gets the square.

(applause sign blinks)

ShinMaster3669d ago

Because the Genesis had a faster processor. Like 7Mhz vs SNES's 3.5Mhz I think.
But everything else, including resolution and colors, was better on the SNES.

Neonridr3669d ago

lol, it was a joke No_Limit.

3-4-53669d ago

This is really wrong. ( article)

* There were so many completely unique games to the SNES & Sega Genesis that it made them two different systems.

* Different Sound chips so music was different

* About 50 games for each system that weren't available for the other that are "classics".

PS4 & XB1 will have MOSTLY the same games.

randomass1713669d ago

Albeit with varying amounts of visual quality.

Concertoine3670d ago

Both were excellent consoles too. Hopefully by the end of this gen both systems will have enough kickass exclusives to warrant both of their purchases to the unbiased gamer.

fonger083670d ago

"Microsoft and Sony know, as Nintendo and Sega did before them, the only thing will truly separate their consoles from the each other is software." I think it's too easy to lose sight that these machines are just boxes, if the developers don't take advantage of each system uniquness outside of just graphically fidelity, then we all lose. That's what made the Genesis and SNES era so epic, the games between the two some of the most iconic and innovative games of all time.

Derekvinyard133669d ago

I had both SNES and sega and both had some great games, TOJAM AND EARL FTW!

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers3h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Xbox Is Not Your Friend

After laying off almost 2,000 people, Xbox finds itself in a position at odds with the community-first image it has cultivated for itself.

lol I’m not a big MS gamer but Sony and a number of others have laid off ton of people as well. Where are the ridiculous articles about them not being your friend? Gaming news is such a joke and these sites wonder why they have to beg for money/patreons or flood with 5x more ads.

Profchaos3h ago

I think the sentiment is corporations are there to make money they are not out friends that are harsh and cutthroat when lt comes to the bottom line so why do we proclaim our love for any gaming company from the rooftops when they wouldn't care about us unless we are buying the next thing.

We need to beore objective with how we view these "teams"

Gridknac2h ago

This is the absolute truth. The only part of you these companies, ALL companies, want to be friends with is your bank account. They don't care what they have to say, who's job they have to cut, or what shady underhandedness they must engage in. Bottom line is all that matters.

Vits1h ago

Because people unfortunately make these companies and products part of their own persona, so when they are scrutinized, they see it as an attack on themselves. There is some neuropsychological research around this phenomenon, but it basically has the same effect as religion. It helps foster a sense of community that humans need to feel comfortable. So that is not happening unless we have a sudden surge of people actually understanding how they work and taking control of themselves.

Magatsuhi57m ago

While it's true Sony isn't a friend either, let's not pretend that they're even in the same ballpark as MS's anti consumer practices. Sony is not a friend but atleast they're not an enemy like MS.

derek1h ago

@twopickles, were you not paying attention? Sony was heavily criticized when they laid off people weeks ago, more than Microsoft did with their massive abk layoffs.

Gamingsince19811h ago

I want to know who thought Xbox was community first anyway lmfao

ChasterMies35m ago

That’s Whataboutism. Sony and other game companies didn’t pay more than $80B to buy up publishers. Microsoft said in court that it wasn’t going to have redundancies and fire people. Microsoft told Xbox owners that they would have a AAA on GamePass each quarter. But here we are with Microsoft Game Studios shrinking. Consolidation doesn’t benefit the consumer, and no company has consolidated more than Microsoft.

BehindTheRows31m ago(Edited 30m ago)

Exactly. They love their SonyToo instead of looking at everything in its totality. You spend $80B to buy up so many pubs/devs, you damn well should have something to show for it.

That said, this article is old and someone is clearly looking for clicks!

z2g0m ago

I’m glad you see the thru the reality distortion field so many on this site don’t. My brother-in-law was just let go from PlayStation (here in PV/LA) literally just weeks ago after taking the job just 2 months before. He quite his previous job that was doing just fine to work for Sony.

ok here is a reality check. Tech companies have been firing thousands of employees the last couple of years.

I find it odd that the percentage of employees sacked from MS

QUOTE
"Microsoft announced approximately 1,900 job cuts across its gaming division, including Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax, and Xbox. 8.6% of its colossal 22,000-strong global workforce. "

is worth writing an article condemning the company, when Sony Interactive fired 8% of its workforce (900 people approximately).

https://news.crunchbase.com...

Is the writer concerned about the percentage of the workforce fired or the number of employees?

Lets not forget that Unity laid off 25 percent of its workforce (1800 people) and Discord laid off 17 percent of its employees.

You also have to take into account the AI issue reported in the article. MS is heavily invested in A.I. They have invested in Open A.I (chatgpt 4+Dalle 3), in Abu Dhabi’s G42 and in French AI company Mistral.

These LLMs have already replaced thousands of jobs as A.I usage becomes more common

https://www.cbsnews.com/new...
https://www.theverge.com/20...
https://tech.co/news/compan...

This is the new reality. Even nvidia CEO said that games will fully A.I generated.

https://www.pcgamer.com/sof...

Nevertheless, no company should be ever viewed as "your friend". MS had numerous anti consumer practices in place and the same is true for Sony (not only in video game space) and Nintendo (60$ dollar games without permanent discounts, remasters of 10 year old game with full price, no console price cuts, expensive joy cons which are prone to drift, to name but a few).

Popsicle2h ago

Must be. Thought it to be common knowledge that no corporation is your friend.

rippermcrip2h ago

Xbox had a community-first image? Since when?

shaenoide2h ago

Any given company is not "friendly"...

Microsoft Seemingly Closes Bethesda France

As part of its plans to cut 1,900 jobs, Microsoft has reportedly shut down operations at Bethesda France, letting go roughly 15 people

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

GamerRN12h ago

If they are let go, they can be whatever they want. They ARE 3rd party now... 🤦

Barlos9h ago

Yeah, they're also jobless.

GamerRN2h ago

They can form a company if they want, they are just as jobless as if "Microsoft had left them as 3rd party".

peppeaccardo4h ago

"MIcrosoft leaves Bethesda do what they know how to do best" ... close! Oh the irony ....
(Citation from a week old article)

ChasterMies40m ago

I think Microsoft and other game publishers are letting people go because they think ai will replace them. Doesn’t matter how much profit they make. They were always going to be let go.

PassNextquestion14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger12h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Profchaos14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto14h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos13h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long10h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

XiNatsuDragnel13h ago

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator12h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.
