Get lost all the time? Can’t read maps? Study says you should play more Super Mario 64

Rocketnews: "I personally never really understood where the stereotype that women are bad at map-reading comes from. When most of the women in my life are more composed, logical, and organised than I or any of the guys I know, it seems odd that girls should be known as poor navigators.

If you do happen to be female and utterly hopeless with maps, though, a recent study suggests that you might benefit from playing video games more often, with findings suggesting that those who regularly pick up a controller have a better sense of direction and get lost less often."

Makes complete sense. My wife is hopeless. If we walk into a shop and exit via a different entrance she can't grasp her bearings. Its funny and frustrating! She is also rubbish at open world games or games with many routes so only plays very linear games. For example heavy rain is her favourite!

Edit even in heavy rain, when the camera angle changed she would change direction and walk back to where she had been. She managed to turn a 15 hour game into skyrim!

Derekvinyard133664d ago

Lmao that's hilarious, she should try gta

sweendog3664d ago

She tried gta4 but she has another problem. She can't drive cars in games! She is full left or full right on the sticks so she zigzags along the road. Don't even get me on to reversing when the camera angle changes

Derekvinyard133664d ago

Lmao my girlfriends favorite game was littlebigplanet

sweendog3664d ago

Love littlebigplanet my daughter plays it a lot. Got both my daughters into minecraft ps3 as soon as it was available so hopefully they don't have my wife's afflictions

sweendog3664d ago

Yeah I really like it. It's amazing when they figure out new stuff and build cool buildings. Me and my eldest have spent hours exploring on our journeys after spending even longer crafting decent armour and a couple of good swoords. I think it even helped my youngest get over her fear of the dark! Anyway last bubble mate was good chatting keep on gaming

Derekvinyard133664d ago

There's something about min craft that kids like, I'd rather that then call of duty anyway

LoveOfTheGame3664d ago

To teach people map navigation while growing up, I feel it should be required to play TES 3: Morrowind. If any game make you laugh at the most complicated maps it is this game.

I would also call the process, Baptism by fire lol.

andrewer3664d ago

haha true, I almost never used Silt Striders and when the pilgrim part started good lord yo it was so many times that I could go to Urshilaku Camp with my eyes closed after that xD

Spikeantestor3664d ago

I've played games for over 20 years and still have no idea how to get to many places I've been frequently.

Pozzle3664d ago

Lol I'm the same. I'm ok with in-game maps and directions....but my sense of direction in real life is practically non-existent. :D

If they ever did I hope they would add onto it, there's so much you could do with Princess Peach's castle alone

roadkillers69d ago

Or just make the Mario 128... the cancelled sequel that sounded amazing (or was it just an amazing tale).

fr0sty69d ago

Funny that after all these years, we still use 64 bit CPUs, so it wouldn't make sense to call it that.

fr0sty69d ago

Yeah, a straight remake doesn't sound good to me. Same formula, but different game.

Number1TailzFan70d ago

Each level is pretty small today in the original game, I don't like huge levels but I think they could be at least 2x bigger, or close to it and more of them, with more things to do.

They could do a mix of having open levels and more linear ones like in 3D World or Land, I doubt they will do that but it would make a change.

Neonridr70d ago

I mean Odyssey's levels weren't massive, but requiring you to do different things in each world is what made the levels feel bigger than they were.

ZeekQuattro70d ago

I'd prefer a Oydessey 2 or Galaxy 3. Besides the DS
game was a Mario 64 remake complete with more playable characters, stages, bosses and muti player content.

Cacabunga70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

I did not like Odyssey i found the idea of ot lame.. i find it boring to just look for moons instead of exploring and enjoying the levels. Let’s not talk about the extremely repetitive and ridiculously easy bosses. Level design is so meh most of the time. Galaxy 2 is a far better game so Galaxy 3 anytime!!!

TiredGamer69d ago

Agreed. I enjoyed Odyssey for a while, but it quickly became very formulaic where each level felt like a checklist of things to do with WAY too many moons to find. The Galaxy series were the best, as they took some of what made 64 great and juiced it up perfectly.

Yes! Let's release an almost 30 year old game to kick off the next generation for Nintendo...
I'm over re-releases...FEED ME NEW MARIO!
