Sony’s Gone ‘Back to the Drawing Board’ to Make Driveclub ‘Great’

IGN :

"The energy surrounding the upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive racing game Driveclub has largely gone from excitement to skepticism. Driveclub was one of the first PlayStation 4 games revealed, and comes from Sony-owned Evolution Studio, a developer that not only understands the racing genre (it made its name on the MotorStorm franchise), but a developer that undoubtedly had very early access to PlayStation 4.

Revealed as a launch title, Driveclub was unceremoniously delayed on the eve of PS4’s western release, creating questions as to what’s going on with it. We got a chance to speak to Sony’s Scott Rohde – one of the men in charge of Sony’s family of first party studios – about the status of its phantom racing game."

Crossbones3692d ago

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! :'(

ArchangelMike3692d ago

You know why don't you. VR integration. There's no other reason I can think of to delay the game game. Sony basically will try and get it to be a launch game for their VR headset, and want it to look the business when it launches.

Gazondaily3692d ago

Or most likely it was quality concerns?

The build I played a few months back was uninspiring really. After that they started showing off tiny little snippets of the game looking VASTLY different to what I played.

They've probably gone back to the drawing board because after gauging player reactions to the 'new' footage, they want to flesh out the game more.

I won't be surprised if Driveclub returned to the more hardcore focus it showed off when it was first revealed. I'd welcome a more hardcore, cockpit-only experience.

xHeavYx3692d ago

Hopefully, some VR integration would be pretty cool.
I do appreciate that they take the time to improve the game, instead of launching an unfinished/downgraded game

GarrusVakarian3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

The title is misleading, i thought the game was being re-booted as of now, phew.

Take your time Evolution, a wait for a better product is better than having a crappy product sooner.

"“So, I think that at PlayStation, perhaps more than at other places, we’re willing to kinda eat that [cost],” Rohde continued, “and go back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it"

I think we all know who he means by "other places". I agree 100%, there are games on "other platforms" that should have had longer dev time, but didn't just so they could release for launch. Not saying they are bad games, but they could have been better with a longer dev time.

I respect devs who are willing to take risks to ensure a better game for paying customers.

abstractel3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

@ArchangelMike I personally hope you are right. What I am concerned about is how dry this spring/summer looks like for next-gen games. After Infamous, we have Watch Dogs which I am skeptical of right now. I am looking forward to Child of Light. What else is there? I was hoping we'd get Dying Light, Driveclub, The Crew, Deep Down and Witcher 3 was at some point due late spring, so was Destiny. I want games to play on my new machine!

YellowTempes3692d ago

Hope they test the VR stuff out with Driveclub so that they can improve it considerably for GT7.

Locksus3692d ago

@Lukas
Yeah, just like Knack was great and not completely rushed to meet the launch of Playstation 4?

r2oB3692d ago

@ Locksus

What technical issues are Knack having that would indicate it was rushed to market?

Boody-Bandit3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

Locksus

WTF are you going on about with Knack? I played it all the way through twice and it sure as hell felt complete to me. I don't recall one moment where I said to myself, "this could've been better with more development."

You wanna talk about rushing games to market (Forza 5, Killer Instinct and Ryse). Which I own them all so I speak from experience and not the back side of my trousers.

On topic:
Considering Evo's track record. I will be patient and hope for excellence. I just want to know ahead of the time 100% confirmed what wheel I will be rocking Drive Club with. Early reports say the Thrustmaster T500 RS but there are some conflicting reports about that.

TheGreatAndPowerful3692d ago

It hasn't been delayed again they're just talking about why it got pushed back in the first place.

AceBlazer133692d ago

I really hope Sony can re-ignite the hype for driveclub.

nukeitall3692d ago

So it was a sh!tty game that needs a lot of work. Those games, rarely end up being good let alone great.

Are they still working on 60fps?

mediate-this3692d ago

Oh snap archangel, you seem really confident in your statement, can i get a job with you working for sony cause you sound like you're in know how. Orrrrr maybe drive club was not ready and they truly dont want to release garbage cause they seen what delays did to watchdogs and dont want bad publicity.

Utalkin2me3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

@Septic

Yeah the build i played a few months back was inspiring.

They've probably wanted to polish it more and maybe incorporate the VR headset.

@nukeitall
Really? You played it and came to the conclusion it was that and needs alot of work. ROFLMAO, kids on there parents computers.

thereapersson3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

@ nukeitall

Still trolling Sony articles for fun and profit I see...

Radentangr3692d ago

DriveClub is on hold because Sony know they have time to improve it. The new IP from Santa Monica was cannibalised so this game could have more time. Sony know they need high quality first party AAA exclusives as they are not against MSFT or Nintendo, they are against the informed core gamer... Smaller audience, harder to please, schooled on the web...

Why do you think Nintendo went after the casuals? Why do you think MSFT have invested 1.4bn (disclosed, with EA, BT and Amazon getting a further 700mm for future announcements) in an attempt to own the living room? Educated consumers are a nightmare! So target the uneducated.

Outside_ofthe_Box3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

@nukei

You have been trolling the game since it's inception.

http://n4g.com/news/1382311...

Makes me wonder why you keep coming into Drive Club articles when you've made it clear you have no interest in it. Also what happened to resolution and frame rates don't matter lol? Double standards at it's finest right there.

parentoftheyear3692d ago

This is exactly why. I was twllig my little brother this the other day. I bet it will launch with vr headset. What better game than racing Sim.

sak5003690d ago

@lukas

So bloody insecure that you have to drag in "other platform".. GO wait for your games and justify whatever delays happening for PS4 games as long as u can try to discredit MS platfor.

YOu ponies are so freaking insecure and worst fanboys of last 2 generations.

Back to titanfall.

GribbleGrunger3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

OK, so I've been seeing this response on Gaf too and I'm confused. I knew this game was delayed and I knew why it was delayed, so why are people suddenly reacting like this? Weird.

@bleedsoe9mm: He's just explaining why it was delayed; something we've been discussing on Gaf for a very long time, which is why (on Gaf at least) the reaction is odd.

bleedsoe9mm3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

its a little confusing are they going back to the drawing board again or is he talking about the first delay

@GribbleGrunger ya thats what i thought , the story isn't very clear though makes it sound like it might be a new delay , thus the reaction

abstractel3692d ago

I think it sounds like the delay is much longer than what was initially announced. They said early 2014, it's no longer early 2014 after March. And when they asked is "it coming out in 2014?" he couldn't even confirm that. I mean hopefully he was just playing it really safe, but I think those comments are what people are worried about.

candoa3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

This is why the ps3 was my last sony console. Sony is known for making you wait for example, ps home, the last guardian, agent, god of war gran turismo the list goes forever, however they make good games that I cannot deny.

I wouldn't be surprise if this games comes in 2016, I know it sounds ridiculous, but I waited 3 years for killzone 2 delay after delay. I guess the ps4 has the perfect slogan "GREATNESS AWAITS". To the new playstation users just sit comfortable because there is going to be a lot of waiting going on.

AngelicIceDiamond3692d ago

So the game isn't releasing late spring nor in the summer despite some early speculations.

"When asked about when it’ll launch, Rohde said, “We’re not announcing any specifics on that yet.”

"When pressed on if it would still come out sometime in 2014, Rohde refused to say, though Sony PR stepped in to say that we’d get more details soon."

So there's officially no release date now. Man what went wrong? I hope they don't pull off GT5 with this.

Kavorklestein3692d ago

I can see them pulling GT5 with this, simply because people defended GT5 and it's delays, and they bought GT5 regardless, Sony and Sony owned devs just do whatever they want.
If Sony was the weaker console this gen, they probably wouldn't even care, or try to improve, OR they might just do what they did with the Cell processor, and blame it on lazy devs or being ported. MS is slightly less appealing with their weaker console this time around, but at least they can admit they have things to work on. Sony denied having any flaws last gen with the Cell, and blamed lazy devs. I dunno if MS really can improve XB1, but, since they at least admit they need/have a goal to improve their console, I'll stay optimistic.
The last Guardian is the only thing that will make me buy a PS4.

frostypants3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

Sounds like they want this to be an ongoing franchise...and to do that successfully, you need that first game to be awesome.

This is the opposite of, say, the Battlefield 4 debacle, where they took an existing franchise's success for granted and kicked out a glorified alpha at least 6 months before it was ready. I say at least because they still have obvious in-match client-server sync issues, and I'm starting to think they released it more like a full year too soon.

I love the concept of Driveclub, but a unique concept won't make it great. Let them take their time. Also, if it is a flagship titles for a new VR device, that would make a lot of people forget all about the delay...

jjonez183692d ago

Not even a 2014 release confirmation :(

showtimefolks3692d ago

i am willing to wait as long as the game will be excellent. Also title has been updated

Dannycr3691d ago

Is it weird that I actually appreciate the honesty of stating the they are not satisfied with the game and will take more time to find that "X" factor?

I prefer that than being deshonest about it, hype it and then get disappointed

Retroman3691d ago

let me be the first to say it. x-boys will try to compare FORZA 5 with DRIVECLUB as they did with Gran Turismo 5

Well, I'm not happy that I won't get to play the game soon... BUT I am happy that when I play it, it will have been worked on extensively rather than rushed.

http://communityteam.softwa...

If this is any indication of how it's coming along, I'm SOOO STOKED

hulk_bash19873692d ago

I'm all for more polish, but that wait is gonna be killer. Here's hoping it doesn't pull a Watchdogs once its re-revealed. I joke.

jonatan2213692d ago

Lol, now that would suck.. and all those NOOOOOOs would be justified haha.

But seeing those gifs really make me feel this was the right choice!

Mrveryodd3692d ago

Sorry dude , I didn't mean to disagree . Bloody ipad

staticdash223692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

It's not being rebooted. Back to the drawing board, just means quality control. The game won't be shipped until it's absolutely ready to come out.

jonatan2213692d ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure people are going to mistake this as Sony scrapping the game and starting anew.

MysticStrummer3692d ago

Yeah "back to the drawing board" is probably a bad choice of words… I hope.

Beastforlifenoob3692d ago

Please... Please dont be another watchdogs

Iltapalanyymi3692d ago

NOOOOOOOOO WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

What is going on? i was SO waiting for this game! It looked great! What was wrong with it?

Xsilver3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

Calm Down I don't think this means the game is Gonna come out in 2015 or something crazy like that i think this means that they went back to the Drawing Board after the delay, polishing the game making sure it's absolutely ready. Well that's what i Think.

zeuanimals3692d ago

I'm pretty sure they're not even talking about a further delay, just explaining why it wasn't at launch in the first place. People need to read the articles. Even people in the IGN comments section don't read the articles.

KwietStorm_BLM3692d ago

What's wrong with you people? I'm assuming you already knew the game was delayed from LAST NOVEMBER. So why these reactions now? All he's doing is explaining the reason it was delayed. It doesn't mean that from today, it was thrown out the window and started over from the ground up.

zeuanimals3692d ago

People don't read the articles. Or they read it and jump to conclusions without thinking about it.

Kayant3692d ago

VR rumour about Driveclub sounding more true IMO. Sad it wouldn't be coming soon from the sounds of it but this game is looking to be something really special. Should be well worth the wait.

frostypants3692d ago

Yep. The timing between the Driveclub delay and the VR rumors seems way too close to be coincidence. How much you wanna bet we see a VR headset demo at E3 with Driveclub as the showcase game?

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

darthv7297d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut8597d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander197297d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff218396d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim97d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno96d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff218396d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 96d ago
Chocoburger97d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai97d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC97d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

Driveclub is over rated as well, with middle of the road handling and the 30fps killed it upon arrival for me.
