Titanfall ships at 792p on Xbox One

Titanfall launches at the same "792p" resolution as the beta code released last month, according to reports that surfaced over the weekend, and officially confirmed by Respawn lead engineer Richard Baker during a recent interview with Digital Foundry.

Better than the beta and i thought the beta looked fine for a shooter like this. This resolution argument stuff has got to stop, the game is ridiculously fun just enjoy it.

minimur123689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

what sort of resolution is 792p, a bit weird, would a tech-head mind explaining this please :)

lmao, I'm getting disagrees, let's do a bit of maths.
if we use the same aspect ratio as 1080p (16:9)*, le'ts figure out what the other number is in 792.
1920/1080=1.7r (that's length of 1 pixel for every height)
so if we times 792 by 1.7r we'll get:
1408 on the dot.
so if the aspect ratio is the same, the resolution of titanfall is 1408x792 who's saying that's not weird?

The aspect ratio, for those who don't know means number of pixels length, by number of pixels wide. 16 along for 9 up.

Until now I didn't know aspect R and resolution were actually so linked, I dunno why, I thought it was something do do with inches when measuring a TV

torchic3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

LOL that's what I was going to say "792" is the most random number ever the devs probably put numbers from 480-900 in a ball machine and which ever one ball is drawn becomes the resolution of the Xbox One game

abzdine3689d ago

792p?
now that's some serious resolution.

"we don't want to give up anything for higher res"

sad to see developers trying to optimise just a few months post release of the console.
Does it mean Titanfall 2 will not be improved at all compared to 1 because of hardware limitations?

brich2333689d ago Show
minimur123689d ago

@birch
960x1080? that's nearly a square, or even so the screen is taller and the length thinner,

900p res is 1600x900 and 1080 is 1920x1080

abzdine3689d ago

@brich233:
w...w...what?

Legacy2123689d ago

"We're going to experiment. The target is either 1080p non-anti-aliased or 900p with FXAA. We're trying to optimise... we don't want to give up anything for higher res. So far we're not 100 per cent happy with any of the options, we're still working on it. For day one it's not going to change. We're still looking at it for post-day one. We're likely to increase resolution after we ship." So are we just going to ignore that part of the article? I dont get it. No one is mentioning it

BadlyPackedKeebab3689d ago

Its in the artical, its as much as they could fit in the EsRam. They would need to remove the AA or turn it down to have enough space to fit a larger target into that space.

plaZeHD3689d ago

792p = 1115136 pixels per frame
1080p = 2073600 pixels per frame

GarrusVakarian3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

I think they should be focusing on framerate and not even be talking about upping the res until they have it at locked 60fps or close to locked 60fps. In the article he says that the worst frame dips in the final build aren't as bad as the beta but the average framerate in the final build is the same as the beta...and for me, that's a little disappointing. The framerate while in a titan has some pretty big dips, the last thing i want is even bigger dips because they upped the res.

If they continue to be unhappy with the results of 900p FXAA and 1080p no AA, then i think they should drop the game down to 720p and get some extra frames. They said framerate is king months ago but they haven't really stuck to that, they should have done everything they could to make the game locked 60fps no matter what is going on in-game.

Reaon3689d ago

it's not entirely random. It's a 10% increase from 720. I guess they figured a 10% increase would be good enough for 'next-gen'. Doesn't make much sense though.

792p isn't a resolution.. It's crap they are feeding people to make them sound like there not releasing it in 720p. It might as well be in 720p though as there no difference..

gaffyh3689d ago

£7.92 is a very reasonable price.

I m sitting here for the past several days reading you guys comments and it struck me!

Why the hell did MS even bother with a new 'next gen' console when its barely 10% faster than the old one???

Now look at all this fuss about its capabilities or lack thereof...

They should have stayed with the 360 and just release the goddamn kinect 2 to an 80 mil install base! It seems now thats all they give a damn about!

TheGreatAndPowerful3688d ago

I mean why would we want to talk about how a $500+ "next-gen" gaming console struggles to sustain a solid 60fps@792p on a game that looks like it was coded for the PS3/360. That's not an interesting topic...moving on.

Titanfall hitting 34fps...proof!

This goes both ways. The developer already confirmed this. Anyway, on Neogaf, the developer confirmed 792p but people straight up ignored him. Developers make it a bigger deal by not being upfront. Kojima handled it the best.

Charybdis3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

So post day one it will be 1080p or 900p, couldn't they have just delayed it instead of patching it up later.

Eonjay3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

The article goes on to insist that while switching to FXAA might have saved enogh space for a 1080p render target (which explains Forza 5), It would have had a negative effect on a already inconsistent frame rate. I think they prioritized frames over resolution. Considering that this engine doesn't look "good" no matter how high the resolution is, I think they made the right decision.

iKenny3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

AMEN to that!!!! Never in my wildest dreams I'd see the day people bitching about resolution?!?! WTFF!!! Just enjoy the game man!!!!

Boody-Bandit3688d ago (Edited 3688d ago )

"Never in my wildest dreams I'd see the day people bitching about resolution"

I was going to say you must be a new N4G member. Then I checked your profile and yup, you are. People have been on this site for years arguing about blades of grass, 1 or 2 more jaggy lines, and as little a disparity as a 20p difference in resolution for years. Thanks to site like lens of truth and digital foundry this place has turned into a battle ground of eagle vision.

The thing that gets me is now that the tables have turned those that once cling to the most miniscule differences is acting as if it's all about game play / fun factor. Even when the difference now mean upwards of 2x+ times more pixels and higher frame rates. When a few years back the differences were in the single digits if not lower and even putting both version side by side you need a magnifying glass to notice them.

That is why this place is now a battle ground and why I always say, be careful. What you champion today could blow up in your face and be your enemy tomorrow / what goes around comes around. It's the circle of life for fanboys and trolls. SMH

zebramocha3689d ago

@bonker not really, dice got bf4 900p @60fps with 4 console and a pc version, respawn only did the xbone and pc version,if this games is so fun then why get the xbone version?shouldn't the 360 be sufficient?

SilentNegotiator3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

"We're likely to increase resolution after we ship"
-
835.667p confirmed. lol

They should have stuck with 720p. Maybe then they would have gotten a perfect 60fps. Don't expect a higher resolution - that rarely happens from beta to gold, let alone after going gold.

Wizard_King3689d ago

Yes the whole "Don't worry guys we will fix it post launch" thing makes me very suss.

When have any of the console devs fixed a game post launch? Sure as hell didn't happen with the COD or BF games and these people used to work on COD games.

They will be more focused on getting the next batch of paid DLC out the door than fixing any bugs or technical issues.

I could understand resolutions between 720p-900p if the game looked absolutely amazing but it doesn't. It looks archaic. I am not saying don't enjoy it, but it really isn't a good looking game either technically or artistically.

That has nothing to do with platform choice, I thought Ryse was a fantastic looking game that lacked in gameplay.

I feel dumb for buying Titanfall for PC after watching the reviews because despite the scores it looks very repetitive.

zero_gamer3689d ago

For the most expensive console on the market, it's not wrong to want better. Substantially sized 4KTVs will hit the sub $1000 market in a few years and this $500 console isn't keeping up with the aging 1080p very well.

Had the Xbox One been priced at 400 (with Kinect), then yeah maybe it is just needless whining.

Likely doesn't mean "will". There's only so much you can squeeze out of a middling GPU with a poor RAM configuration. But cling to whatever miracles you want.

G20WLY3689d ago

"Likely" is a bit like "soon" or "slightly" - it can't be measured and nobody can pull you up on it.

It's pointless mentioning it until you're sure.

Couldnt hit 900p with the driver updates AND the new SDKs??? That is really ridiculous. WTF Ms and Respawn??? This is their biggest game and the 'system seller'. This does not look good - I expected more when I preordered this game and now I am officially let down. Game looks nice and all but come on man at least 900p by launch. Epic letdown.

Death3689d ago

Regardless the native resolution, it will be 1080p on your tv.

GarrusVakarian3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

It will be *upscaled* 1080p on your TV, not native. It's not the same thing.

torchic3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

I will one day make a game with a resolution of 1p and will tell customers it is 2160p on their UHDTVs oh ok gotcha

Hicken3689d ago

Is that supposed to be some sort of consolation, Death? It's okay if it's native 489p, since it'll be upscaled on your TV?

Death3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

I know it is upscaled. The upscaler is part of the 7 series derived GPU's that are part of the AMD APU in both consoles. Upscalers in GPU's are very efficient and do much more than the upscaler in your tv or dvd player.

When you change the graphics settings in your PC, do you think the game is coded for each resolution available? Your graphics card is upscaling or in some cases down grading image quality based on your PC's specs.

You guys are focusing in on native resolution and missing the big picture. GT6 is 1080p and doesn't look as good as Drive club or Forza on the Xbox One. It's not the resolution that makes the differance.

@Hicken, you don't own an Xbox One. Why would that be any consolation for you? Killzone multiplayer is interlaced to provide 1080 resolution. Natively it's 960x1080. Does that make the game worse for you?

badz1493689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

@Death

yeah, from now on, let ALL games be native 720p and let the upscaler do the job to output 1080p on your tv. and let the Xbone be the last console ever made because the upscaler is the best thing that ever happen to gaming. while we are at it, advertise ALL games as 1080p on the back of it box as the masses won't even notice the difference. /s

EDIT:

Learn to read. They will update the resolution after launch.

ado9083689d ago

@Dudebro90 but why tho? Why couldn't they just put the resolution at 900p or 1080p before launch instead of after?

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3689d ago

Lol, The game was developed wayyyyy before the New SDK's and Driver updates were released! The games that will come out in about 4-6 months for Xbox One will be the ones built on the newer Drivers and DX11.2 SDK's, Do you think that games are developed in a few weeks...? Use your common sense.

christocolus3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

Lol. Not everyone loves to use their CS. Im curious though,it seems the rumors about an upgrade post launch were true and it also proves that the new sdks have actually freed up a lot more resources for devs and if the latest rumors are anything to go by then it would mean dx12 will further improve the sdks when its finally released..but for now i wonder which they will end up with 900p or 1080p?

Why are naysayers on this article? I believe ubisoft and activision did similar upgrades to their games on ps4 post launch so whats the big deal here? Anyways, whatever they gonna do i hope they put fps first though.

I just read the first batch of reviews and it seems this game is exactly what the doctor ordered...going to be awesome.

Physical media. Unfortunately the way games are going these days game servers will eventually be shut down and you can stare at the menu and wish you could play the game again.

littletad865d ago

This is why reading is so important. Nothing to do with digital or physical media. The game, which is online only, is being delisted because of DDOS and other hacker attacks. The case got so bad that only six players in the world log on. For PC. Rather than fix it, they continued to sell the game, broken as it is, and only now just decided to call it quits. But please, go on thinking what you will.

Ethereal863d ago

I'm aware of the DDOS attacks and that this case is not typical. This game would eventually have it's servers shutdown regardless of the current situation so that is a moot point. My comment was in a general sense and that there are instances in which games can be preserved physically when official support ends.

Let's recap your first sentence. I said, "the way GAMES are going these days" indicating a broader stroke than just this game. I agree, reading IS important. I was simply stating the obvious downsides of the digital marketplaces and online only trends in games these days. I could even make the argument that the online only offering which has allowed hacker manipulation has impacted the preservation of this great game. My comment is valid in the general sense and thank you for your permission to continue to think what I will.
