PlayStation 4 Japan Hardware Launch Comparison to Past Platforms

PlayStation 4 (¥41.979 / ¥46.179) launched in Japan just three days ago and the results for how it performed during its first two days are in. Of course, this isn’t about how well the PlayStation 4 has performed, but how how well it has performed in comparison to past platforms.

2000.03.04 [Sony PlayStation 2] (¥39.800) – 630.552 (2 days)

abzdine3706d ago

Xbox more than Dreamcast? now that's an insult!
Good performance from PS4 without many games for Jap audience. PS2 has a weak line up but it appealed to the japanese audience: Dark Cloud, The Bouncer, Ridge Racer, Evergrace...

lonelyplayer3706d ago

Looks like original xbox disappointed Japanese people and that's why 360 failed so hard over there.

deafdani3706d ago

I loved The Bouncer, actually. It was the first PS2 game I finished. :P

darthv723706d ago (Edited 3706d ago )

@lonely... the dismal 360 sales are more attributed to the dropping of the xbox platform right when the 360 came out. In JP, that kind of move is not very honorable and they showed their distaste for the move with the 360 sales overall.

Had Ms continued support for xbox, the 360 could have probably fared better but...who knows.

It is rather interesting how the order of platforms that had higher launches than the PS4 322k+ are this:
PS2 630k+ in 2 days
NDS 468k+ in 4 days
3DS 374k+ in 2 days
Wii 371k+ in 2 days
PSV 324k+ in 2 days

and missing the mark...
Wii-u 308k+ in 2 days

The majority of the list was over a 2 day period. The NDS showing 4 days is the odd man out. So the PS4 marks the 6th best opening weekend launch in JP gaming.

@ darth

So what's the difference between that and Nintendo dropping the Wii completely prior to the launch of the Wii U?

mediate-this3706d ago (Edited 3706d ago )

@abzidine
Can you not refer the japanese as jap, itis insulting and degrading to japanese people. Plus i got in trouble for saying it.

2006.11.11 [Sony PlayStation 3] (¥49.980 / ¥59.980) – 88.443 (2 days)

That's a bummer.

MultiConsoleGamer3706d ago

Seems like a strong start.

Wedged between two Wii consoles.

Neonridr3706d ago

ironically it sold just a tad more than the Wii U did during it's launch over the first few days.

lonelyplayer3706d ago

Wii u had a good start but the lack of games is killing it.

Shnazzyone3705d ago

Sure hope that doesn't happen to ps4. Those numbers are pretty close.

Dunban673706d ago

Additionally, The Wii U launched in November holiday shopping season and the PS4 is not- that will have some effect to the comparison- Wi U sales fell off a cliff after X-mas (and game delay announcements)

It will be interesting to see how long the PS4 will sell continue to sell out in Japan post launch

Prime1573706d ago (Edited 3706d ago )

I don't know enough about the Japanese culture... do they see the same sales surge during the western holiday months for your point to be true?

Dunban673706d ago (Edited 3706d ago )

Prime157,

I don t know if it is quite as big but they def have a holiday seasonal sales surge in Japan - if you look at video game hardware and software sales in Japan from Nov thru Dec compared to the rest of the year it's clear they buy a lot during that time frame compared to non seasonal sales

If I remember correctly Iwata said as much as 80% of thier revenue globally could come from the Oct thru Dec quarter in a given year

Edit
It seems the Japanese Seasonal sales surge starts a little closer to Christmas than ours in the US. But November is still a strong month in Japan and December even stronger

IRapeLolis3706d ago (Edited 3706d ago )

PS4 is doing great. Elsewhere at EA HQ however... http://www.quickmeme.com/me...

WeAreLegion3706d ago

Bubble for AD. There is absolutely no way Microsoft's check covered the potential profits EA would see from PS3/PS4 versions of Titanfall. They'll have to write a MUCH bigger check to keep the series exclusive. I'm not sure they'll be able to do that.

Magicite3706d ago

EA and MS deserve each other.

mediate-this3706d ago

Great because tf belongs on every possible platform. Its a great game that should be experienced by all gamers.

barb_wire3706d ago (Edited 3706d ago )

You know, for a country the size of Japan, those figures (no, matter which console) seem low.

One thing is certain though, Japan sure loves their handhelds.

ritsuka6663706d ago

If you ask me it did better than the Vita. I just hope it does not fall like it. lol

GordonKnight3706d ago

I think that is the reason Nintendo made the Wii U with the gamepad.

worldwidegaming3706d ago

It honestly took too long to sell out! two days.It should have been the same day.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

Used to love this one, but X-Men Legends 1 and 2 will always be my favorites, especially Rise of Apocalypse. Would pay some good money to play it today with online multiplayer, back then I had no way to get a modem

ZeekQuattro3h ago

I remember buying them dirt cheap on the PS4 and then a few days later I read they were delisted. I was wondering why the bundle was price so low and got my answer when that happened.

Knightofelemia1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Sad to say this is one game franchise next to the Xmen that needs a sequel. I use to play the hell out of Xmen Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Was great when my cousin had the OG Xbox play with four other people and then playing online. Great games glad to see it reappear even though I own the discs love the mechanics of this game.

Terry_B1h ago

It got a sequel..but for dumbass #reasons as a switch exclusive.

shinoff21831h ago

It looked so horrible to. They should've kept it similar to the first two.

Asplundh1h ago

Because Nintendo funded it, they did the same for Bayonetta.

Knightofelemia48m ago

I totally forgot about the Switch sequel.

jukins1h ago

Misleading. This page is whats available for people who owned the game prior to delisting.

Abnor_Mal37m ago

The first game was the best imo.
