The Top 5 Final Fantasy Games

With Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII having come out on Tuesday, this week, the 411 staff were asked to give out lists for their Top 5 Final Fantasy Games. Anything with the Final Fantasy name was allowed, as long as it was not another series entirely. So, things like the Final Fantasy Legends series or Final Fantasy Adventure don't count because they were other games entirely that Square just put the Final Fantasy name on so it would sell.

FFVIand tactis in every list for good reason

UltimateMaster3714d ago

I think FF6 is overrated. FF5 had a better story, but never came to the US on SNES and FF5 is greatly underrated.

Tactics ain't good compared to others of it's kind.
Weirdly enough, it almost created that genre.

DEATHxTHExKIDx3714d ago

FFV rlly? Another story on crystals and I didn't care to much for the characters the villian was nothing special either.FFV is ok but VI beats it hands down imo.

Top 5 FFs are CLEARLY

#1 FF13
#2 FF13-2
#3 FF13-3
#4 FF 13-4: Vanille's Dance-Off Competition
#5 FF 13-5: Vs. Pee-Wee's Big Top PlayHouse (Lawrence Fischburn Edition)

Anyone who says otherwise just doesn't understand true JRPGs.

Have to admit I like the attention FF8 is getting lately, finally the attention it deserves.

deathtok3714d ago

I wanted to love it but the summons in the battle system made legit battles irrelevant.

Larry L3714d ago

I was never a fan of 8. Graphics were incredible in that day, and I didn't dislike the battle system, characters or really any of the parts that make up the whole. What killed it for me was the story. It starts off good but after disc 1 it becomes a bunch of rediculous claptrap that goes nowhere and makes absolutely no sense.

That's how I felt until a couple years ago when on some random posting on some random forum or message board, I saw someone in passing mention the "FF8 Squall's Dead Theory" and how it made him LOVE FF8. No other details were mentioned but he had alot of agrees so I decided to look it up and I have to say..........it makes perfect sense and really did "fix" the story for me.

I mean, it doesn't really raise it up the list of my favorite FFs because it pretty much is where it is on that list by default anyway. But it does transform what was a completely nonsensical story and make it HIGHLY interesting. I suggest anyone who disliked 8's story to look up the Squall's Dead Theory and see if it doesn't totally change your perspective on the game.

What I really need now is an interview with 8's writer and director about this theory because it's SO perfect, and makes SO much sense, that I now find it basically impossible to believe this wasn't their angle with the story in the first place and just never told anybody. I think I once read that someone did ask him about the theory and just got a coy smile as a reply.

Any FF list with VI at the top, is a win.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens529d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens529d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK21219d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens528d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens528d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani8d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum9d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman9d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim9d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

I disagree Batman

It's insane its been this long since the last release.

CrimsonWing6911d ago

Not from you.

Knowing how you handled FF16 by trying to make it appeal to non-fans and changing the entire gameplay design I can see you changing Tactics to appeal to non-fans.

If they’re going to do this please give it to someone who wants to keep the game and genre in tact.

VersusDMC11d ago

He worked on tactics ogre reborn. Was there changes? He wouldn't make an FF tactics game an action game. It will be AA but faithful. Probably what the Diofield Chronicles team and some of the FFXVI team is probably working on already and he is just keeping a secret.

And FF hasn't had a set gameplay design since X. I disliked the MMO, 12, 13 FF's but didn't mald for years. I played other games. Stop crying as he probably won't make a single player FF again and will be busy with the next FF MMO.

EternalTitan11d ago

I can feel your hatred. Keep it up.

Ataraxias11d ago

Tactics Ogre Reborn was an overall solid product but almost eliminated the concept of builds in the game.
So we'd probably end up with a system where character jobs like Mercenary for Ramza is 80% of the character instead of being freeform.

SegaSaturn66911d ago

Tactics Ogre Reborn changed a lot of gameplay mechanics for the worse. The class system is weird and hard to lock in roles, and they shoehorned a new "random card appearing" mechanic on the maps which makes no sense. Previously you obtained those boosts from killing powerful opponents, not spawning randomly.

There's a way better way to play Tactics Ogre: the fanmade onevision mod of the psp version.

EternalTitan11d ago

16 was just a terrible mess.
Its not even a JRPG let alone a final fantasy game.
Yosi piss(who said he hates JRPGs) should not touch another Final Fantasy game ever again.

VersusDMC11d ago

87 metacritic can't be a terrible mess.
If Kingdom Hearts is a JRPG then FFXVI is a JRPG. And he said he hates the term JRPG as it carries a bad stereotype with western journalists.

So you're just incorrect on several fronts...

Asterphoenix10d ago

I wouldn't mind a new FF Tactics longs they keep the tactical elements of Tactics in it as well as a very in depth story. Which FF Tactics years ago has by far one of the best stories in the series.

Tapani10d ago

Yes, alongside with Vagrant Story. Playing FFT, then Vagrant story and finally FFXII is a bliss. Deepest lore and best stories ever made in video games.
