Dev Spotlight: Examining 5 of the Best Storytellers in Gaming

Entertainment Buddha's Matt Heywood writes, "Over the years a major debate has raged between fans of traditional entertainment mediums such as films and TV, and fans of video games, namely over the artistic value of a game when compared to a movie, book, or TV show. Many critics who don’t eat, sleep, and breathe video games don’t feel that they constitute art, and while that may be true for certain genres of games, a handful of studios have really made a case for video games as art."

I'd include Remedy Entertainment as well.

I believe that only people that haven't played Remedy's games couldn't see that.

Uh....and CD Project Red. Though the ones he listed are so damn good. For so long I have wanted Bethesda to hire a few ppl from Bioware and create the best rpg ever made. Then I saw the witcher 3...and that may just be what ive always wanted.

In a strange way, I kinda think From Software should get an honorable mention for creating a game that allows players to create and live out their own epic stories...that are burned into the players minds in a similar fashion to those like Bioware and Irrational. Its a different approach but Dark Souls story had me so engaged that I just couldn't get enough. I probably spent more time studying its lore than any other rpg b/c the immersion was unbelievable.

I think those 5 are the best ones this generation. But there are a quite a few others that are also really good.

Don't put Beyond Two Souls or David Cage's name anywhere near good storytelling and video games unless the words "This is not" is before the words good storytelling. David Cage is a terrible hack of a writer, I was extremely excited for Beyond Two Souls but the game is just god awful in it's storytelling with one of the most mary sue protagonists ever seen in gaming. Not to mention the fact that Uncharted 3 has terrible writing as well. Although unlike Beyond Two Souls there is actually some good gameplay. More on why Beyond Two Souls is a stain on video game storytelling(and storytelling in general) watch this

It boggles my mind that Aiden was spook poorly used. He could have supplied all the gameplay needed to keep players interested, intrigued and coming back. They should have hired a puzzle creator to implement different situations using both protagonists. It could have been amazing...and it would allowed players something to do while they experienced the story. Also, actions must have consequences. Beyond was a major step backwards from Heavy Rain in that regard.

Bioware's greatest achievement was their earlier games, not Mass Effect. Only the first game could be considered great in terms of story, but after that it's losing quality.

He was one of my least favorite characters. I wish they would have done the Proths different.

The Last Of Us Series Has Remarkable Potential For Spin-Offs

Najam from eXputer writes "It's time fore a new installment in the series, not another pointless remaster."

anast75d ago

They are working on something new. Not to be rude but it is impossibility stupid to think ND next major announcement is going to be a remaster or their next Last of Us entry is going to be another remaster.

AlterRecs72d ago

I think this is in response to them releasing a remaster for the sequel, a game that didn't need a remaster.

Basically a "why did you put out a remaster no one asked for when you have all there options available"

anast72d ago

They remaster is to put out something quick while they are deving new stuff. I don't get how people can be so static.

AlterRecs71d ago

There's no news about a third game being in production, you're just assuming that they're working on something that they aren't

anast71d ago

When they release the news to start the hype-train, you can give me my props then.

DrDoomer75d ago

I want an alternate timeline spin-off, where part 2 never happened.

CrimsonWing6975d ago

They’ve already done Remasters of 1 and 2… what else is there to Remaster?

AlterRecs72d ago

Considering they remastered the first game twice, who knows lol

CrimsonWing6972d ago

That was a Remake. I guess they could do that to 2, but man…. They should wait a couple generations so it can look like a major upgrade.
