Tomorrow's Xbox One update requires manual download

Tomorrow's eagerly awaited Xbox One system update must be downloaded manually, an Xbox representative confirmed today.

I think given how the XOne for many has their TV also running through the system it makes a bit of sense it would be a manual update. This way you can hold off on doing the update if its hitting during a time you would want to watch something. Update later when you are ready. I am sure it also has a "use of terms" change that needs to be "accepted" at some point which has become standard practice for consoles.

It's more the fact that the update could take a while, and if it was automatic it would happen when the update was released, and not on your own game time

I'm sorry but have any of the past xbox updates taken 'a while' I think even the last time they overhauled the dashboard it was still the same if not quicker than a lot of the ps3 SLLLOOOWWWWWW system updates.

I hope they update the surround sound for watching TV via the Xbox one... I split my hdmi so I can watch TV without the Xbox one. By splitting the hdmi I still have the option of watch TV via the Xbox one, but I get much better sound (I have a 7.1 Onkyo receiver) without the Xbox one. The wife also likes to watch TV without the Xbox One on- (having a harmony one remote is a must for a happy marriage:)

Thanks for the reply- I was aware of this option and have it turned on. The problem with my setup is that I get sound from my two rear speakers, but no sound from my side speakers while watching TV via the xbox one. The xbox one games sound amazing from my 7.1 setup… not a big deal, but would like to see an update so this option is no longer beta.

You people need to read. The MAJOR update comes in March. Microsoft doesnt want to push nonstop updates when they dont have to. In MARCH this update along with the big one will push straight to the systems

I have PS4 and XBone. Unless I'm missing something, PS4 does NOT auto-update, it only auto-downloads. Every update I've received still has to be installed, just like the PS3. If this XBone update allows for all future updates to auto-update instead of just auto-download, that would be very nice indeed.

The thing some people don't seem to understand is that there are different types of updates, and some require you to "Accept" the TOS, so they can't be 100% automatic.

the reason they give you the option to accept the tos is so you can't sue them if the patch bricks the system. Microsoft plays it smart to keep their butts clean while the consumer is screwed.

XBL system updates in time for Titanfall as well as developers getting an updated SDK to run faster and make games run 1080p easier according to Rebellion games.

According to Rebellion the X1 will do 1080p easier. Where in my statement did I say it mattered. 720p 900, 1080 whatever its all good to me.

I'm pretty sure that the PS4 auto updates if you have the option ticked. There have been several updates since launch and I can't remember having to do them manually.

There is just a notification to say that an update was installed. It all happens in the background even if the system is in standby mode.

Not trolling or anything but The X1 already has Auto Download and update feature since day one.... this is just a manual update because it changes so much to your system so they need your permission to update the system. It is more then just some measily uupdate to a game like adding jerseys and stuff its a complete overhaul and only part 1 of 2

I'm just glad they got rid of the annoying flashing the 360 controller had when the battery was running down. It started at 50% and drove me nuts when gaming. Should have started at 10%

I sure hope the X Bone pulls out its trump card. Halo was the only justification for my 360 purchase but that lasted all but 2 months. I have yet to find a reason to tear away from my Sony brand. Nintendo came close but ruined that by being so Nazi exclusive.

6vs6 is so 1990's hardly next gen is it. Joint Operations were doing 64 player maps (up to 64square KM's) That were almost ten years ago on half, even quarter of the RAM.

Yeah and most are Indies. Now remove all those indie titles and multi-plats and we can see just how poor the PS4's lineup of games is compared to the X1.

MS has dropped $1 billion on game development for the X1 while Sony talks up indies because they have nothing else except the same old; Uncharted, Infamous etc.. milk. Yeah, MS has it's share of milk to but to their credit they've added a lot of new IP's on top of that.

The X1 is now the hated console just like the PS3 was in the beginning of last gen. But like the PS3, the X1 will start spitting out the exclusives and gamers will flock to it. All the current and past X1 negativity will be long forgotten and MS will be out in front just as it was; and still is with the PS3. All MS has to do is bring the games and you can stick a fork in Sony and the PlayStation brand. Sony has no money and their credit has been dropped to junk status I wouldn't expect much fight from them this time around. The clock is ticking.

Not to be an ahole but this update is pointless because it should already have been on the system. Microsoft should be working on updating sdk coding (eSRAM) so the system can play games at native 1080p and 60fps or update for the expensive 7.1 xb360 headsets to work on the xbone that we spent mad money on like Sony did for the pulse heads to work for ps4.
