Best Next Gen Graphics. And the winner is....

Okay, so there's been a lot of talk about which game has the best next-gen graphics. 2 names constantly come up, and that's Ryse: Son of Rome for the Xbox One, and Killzone: Shadow Fall for the PlayStation 4. What looks best to each of us is highly subjective, but here's my opinion on the matter.

And to me the best looking next-gen game so far are between Ryse, Killzone, and Battlefield 4. All 3 of those games look amazing, and do something better than the others. Unfortunately Battlefield 4 is different depending on which platform you play on, and considering this is a best console graphics debate I can't include the PC version, so I ruled out adding BF4 to this comparison which is fine considering it's the 2nd best game graphically on each console. That being said I'll have 3 - 5 screenshots after a brief review of both Killzone and Ryse, demonstrating the best they have to offer, and finally the worse. At the end I'll post the winner, and let you guys decide in the comments, so let's get started.

Character models.

Ryse: IMO this goes to Ryse. The character models in this game are among the best I've ever seen (especially in cutscenes). Facial capture is amazing, and In-game models look great as well (especially Marius). Even common enemies have great models, although they're constantly repeated, and often within the same fight. While most of the character models in Ryse are astonishing, unfortunately not all characters are treated with the same level of fidelity, specifically female characters looking worse than some common soldiers.

Killzone: Killzone is hit / with a single miss with their character models. The Helghast look absolutely amazing, and on par with Ryse (especially during executions). The ISA models are on par with Ryse enemy models. And even the normal Vedka civilians look good as well. The sole downfall are the Helgan civilians who look downright ugly at times. I know it's because they're starving, sick, etc..., but they could have looked better.

Environments.

Ryse: Roman cities look great, the vegetation looks great, textures looks great, overall the environments look great as you'll see in the screens. But as we'll see to a lesser extent in Killzone, the early stages look amazing but there's a big level of inconsistence in Ryse, and graphics begin to waiver at times. It's just a sign of the launch rush. The game grays up a lot towards the middle, and while most stages look great, some are completely bland.

5. http://images.eurogamer.net...

Killzone: Killzone suffers from launch syndrome like Ryse, where some areas are quite up to the polish of the first few and last few stages, but it's well above Ryse when it comes to environments. The stages are open and multi-leveled, lightning is great, textures are amazing, and it shows that Guerilla was working full force up to the end on this game.

Multiplayer.

Ryse: Usually games take a hit in the graphics department when it comes to multiplayer and Ryse is no exception to that rule. The character models are incredibly still pretty much identical to their single player counterparts, but the environment has taken a noticeable downgrade. It's not bad, but it's noticeable.

3. http://i2.minus.com/i1ZTUUo...

Killzone: When I played Killzone I was shocked that the multiplayer is almost 1:1 ratio of what you get in the single player. Maps are fairly big, textures, foliage, etc... are all nearly identical to what you get in the single player, with the only loss being a bit of extra tessellation and reflections. Character models look amazing as well. Killzone is surprising the a near clone to it's single player, and deserves praise on that alone.
Yes this is multiplayer, be wow'ed

Textures / Effects.

Ryse: Crytech did an amazing job with the textures and effects in Crysis 3, and many of them find their way into Ryse. Puddles have reflections, roofing looks good, stone looks good, and foliage looks good.

Killzone: However, Killzone shows why GDDR5 is the more important RAM, and the textures in this game are amazing. Reflections, Sparse Ray Tracing, tessellation, fabrics, particles effects, lighting, all look amazing in Killzone.

Resolution-Gate

Ryse: Ryse is technically the worse of the 2 games. It runs in 900p @ 30fps, but the game is upscaled to 1080p and there are some frame dips that occur dropping down to low 20's a bit to often.

Killzone: Killzone on the other hand is running at native 1080p @ and an unlocked framerate ranging from 30 - 45 fps. However, multiplayer is 1080p @ 60fps (most of the time).

Conclusion.

Both of these games look great, and are hopefully only a taste of what's to come for each console. When it comes to character models Ryse takes home the crown. In-game character models all look great, with most of the main cast looking among the best in any game especially in cutscenes. Killzone matches Ryse with it's unrivaled quality in the Helghast soldiers, but falls short when it comes to Helghast civilians.

Killzone strikes back and blows the competition away when it comes to environments, the game looks good from start to finish, dominates in lighting, particle effects, scale, and more. In comparison Ryse looks great in the beginning, quality slips half way through, grays out for the next few chapters, then picks it up at the end.

Killzone also takes home the crown when it comes to multiplayer graphics as well. Ryse looks good, but you're in a tight coliseum, and there's still some fidelity lost, whereas Killzone is nearly 1:1 with the single player and boosted to 60fps.

Winner: It's to close call, and I'm awarding both with their very own console graphics award and a smilie face :D. But personally I would give Killzone the edge, simply because it's the most consistent of the two. Ryse graphics are amazing and I've used the former screens to show each game at its best. The character models are it's bread and butter, and the environments are great as well, but ultimately there are parts that let the game down due to inconsistencies where the quality of graphics and framerate drops hard. Framerates dip below 20fps, and it seems as if the resolution / quality of the image drops as well to keep up. My guess is that it's a rushed launch title, and Killzone has some issues, but nowhere to the degree of Ryse. Ryse has framerate drops consistently throughout the game (not game breaking) and the quality drops seem to happen when there's too much going on, but particularly in the middle stages when the gray graphics kick in.

That almost looks like a Alpha footage, but it isn't. Which again is why I say it's the early launch woe's. Meanwhile this is the only section of Killzone that looks subpar with the rest of the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

So overall Killzone is the better game graphically to me. There are times when Ryse looks better (specially scenes focusing on the characters), but overall Killzone wins the beauty award to me. It could have went either way, and Ryse could have won had it not been for the downgraded sections halfway through the game, and ABUSE of motion blur. Both games are show pieces for what the next-gen will be capable of for their respective consoles. InFAMOUS: Second Son looks like the first challenger to the throne of these two games, and based on screenshots it looks like it already won the Environment round. We'll see in a month. Leave your comments below on which game you think takes home the graphics crown.

Killzone is techncally the most impressive, but overall I think Ryse looks better. It's the same type of thing as Uncharted versus Killzone 2/3

Uncharted focuses in certain areas that make it look better

ABizzel13728d ago (Edited 3728d ago )

It's the character models.

I sat down and looked at both games extensively. And the character models in Ryse are what make it look so impressive. The environments looks great, and they sell the setting of Ancient Rome, but the character models are what makes Ryse look so good.

Killzone is the exact opposite. The character models look great in Killzone, but it's everything else that makes it so impressive. The environments, the texture work, the lighting, and the Helghast make Killzone look so good.

Character models = Ryse
Environment = Killzone (Ryse at it's best is right there, but mid-stages bring it down)
Textures = Killzone
Multiplayer Graphics = Killzone
Performance / Reso-Gate = Killzone

Yeah, I've always noticed that when character models are good the graphics always give us the impression of being much better.

Both fantastic looking games here.

Stellar Blade Day One Update 1.002 Adds New Game+, Removes Offensive Graffiti

Shift Up has released Stellar Blade day one update 1.002 on PS5, and those who preloaded the game should be notified of this update.

cliveo3211h ago

Lol who is offended by it 1 percent of crying snowflakes of course..

blackblades4h ago

What did it mean? Considering I'm in my own world these days.

Christopher2h ago

Hard R is typically a reference to the N-word with the hard r at the end.

Eonjay1h ago

Do you really not know this is about the n-word or are you saying that black people can't get offended because it upsets you?

Christopher2h ago

I can't believe they're censoring this game on day 1. Games just aren't the same.

/s in case it's needed. I'm fine with them making these changes that they might not have known is culturally insensitive to some people in the big ole world. But that's just me.

VersusDMC1h ago

They are censoring something that is deemed offensive by Journalists quoting the offensive term verbatim. They are typing it intentionally in articles while in the game it's a wall texture saying Hard next to a unrelated 3d model sign that says R store. Is it offensive or not? Crazy town.

At least IGN just shows the term with a screenshot of the game. Because it's their "discovery" and to not show hypocrisy in their HUGE vitue signal.
Hard R is the not offensive way to describe an offensive term. Are they going to type "Ha$$ R" or not use the term now?

Christopher1h ago

Oh, hey, I agree with you that IGN and other journalists are dumb. Not disagreement there. But, I think for a game going out to millions of people across the world? It's not something they want associated with them. It's just horrific PR.

Tacoboto58m ago

Add to the horrific PR nightmare that this is the first major Korean-developed Sony-published title, if I'm not mistaken.

There aren't that many Korean developed titles in general. And the allowance of this only would drive a bigger fissure in east vs west especially after Final Fantasy XVI released featuring no black characters at all...

Not a good look for Sony regardless of how you personally feel about it or the people that talk about it.

VersusDMC24m ago

I'm not saying it shouldn't have been changed. It's an easy fix and looks like it was an easy fix.

But the word HARD being too close to the letter R being a horrific PR nightmare and a indication of a racist developer is beyond crazy.

Stevonidas1h ago

Pre-order cancelled. They were so close.... then they had to go and bend the knee.

Eonjay1h ago

If you can't enjoy the game without knowing there are racial slurs plastered on the walls, you might actually be the snowflake.

Tacoboto1h ago

"Hey why didn't you get that game? I heard it's got that hot Korean chick?"

"I was gonna, but then they removed a reference to the N word!"

Crows901h ago

I'm offended by the sight of blood a d violence and find violence to be very insensitive...

We can all play stupid and pretend to be offended by graphics and fake worlds.

DFresh15m ago

I really enjoyed the demo.
I'm going to play through and max out on story mode then go to the challenge mode afterwards.
This game is very challenging but fun.
Especially for timing on the parrying and blocking.
Got the Deluxe Digital Edition (PS5) pre ordered.
