Sonic Boom: Real Hope for the Hopeless Hedgehog

Sonic's success is about more than a questionable redesign.

We can all agree that Sonic and his buddies have too many wraps around their hands and feet in the upcoming Sonic Boom. But when The Blunder Busters looked closer, there are some strong indicators--beyond gameplay, beyond 'roided-out Knuckles--that Sonic Boom is SEGA's greatest effort to revitalize the franchise in a long while. Here's why it might work.

You all say you are excited about a new Sonic game and then when it is actually released you are back hating it again. The same will happen with Sonic Boom, you will be all positive at first and then you will be back to bashing it again.

There has never been anything really wrong with newer Sonic games, it's just that so many people are stuck in the past and get all caught up in nostalgia. If these newer Sonic games weren't actually called Sonic then these games would have nothing but positive reviews.

nintendufus3729d ago

I see your point--Sonic games have become sort of a running joke in recent years, with many gamers dismissing them as trash on principle. Me? I've gotten my hands on every one I can afford, approaching each with an open mind and distancing myself from nostalgia as much as possible. And, even with decent titles like the DS version of Colors, they still just don't impress. Sometimes, it has nothing to do with gamers' expectations for a game or nostalgia for the series. Sometimes, games are just bad.

Dread223729d ago (Edited 3729d ago )

Some of them are good, some are meh and some are bad. Here are some examples for Home Consoles and PC - Good: Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure,Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations.
Meh: Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Unleashed , Sonic 4 Episode 1 & 2, Sonic Lost World.
Bad: Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06 (Terrible).

Now granted some people may say Adventure isn't good because of Big the Cat. I'd say that's a fair point but there is nothing wrong with the gameplay. Nor does it prevent you from playing all of Sonic Levels (besides Super Sonic, which is suppose to be an unlockable kinda like the Emeralds from Sonic 2/Sonic 3 and Knuckles).

Sonic Boom could be good, could be bad. I just know I love Jak and Daxter/Uncharted so I'll give them a chance.

Dread, what was bad about sonic heroes?

KonsoruMasuta3729d ago

I have hope for this game because of the person leading the project. I usually don't get hyped for Sonic games unless they show something promising, which non of the recent games seem to do.

GadgetGooch3729d ago

It has nothing to do with sonic...most people just don't like bad games...this on the other hand ACTUALLY has potential...just the overall essence of the game seems upped and with having some quality developers on hand helps too...

Generations was tons of fun and (just my opinion deal with it)Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is one of the best kart racers out there. But yes there have been some flops but it all hasn't been doom and gloom for the franchise.

thezeldadoth3729d ago

i hope mario kart 8 takes influence from transformed. its truly an awesome racer

The only problem I have with the new look is how Knuckles looks, he just looks plain weird. I think the other characters look fine though.

Shadonic3729d ago

sonic's and amy's limbs are off and a change too Sonics arm color is needed. different scarf color ? knuckles head should be changed more as it looks shopped. Less bandages

Dread223729d ago

Agreed, Knuckles look weird. But to be honest Knuckles has basically been a deadweight since Sonic Heroes. Maybe they needed to knock the hiphop out of him. Put him on some steroids and make him a bro lol.

SteamPowered3729d ago

Somebody better check Knuckles for PED's. We dont want him to drag gaming into the Steroid Scandals that plague other sports.

DigitalHope3729d ago

Haven't felt good about a Sonic game in a long time. This looks good though, real good. Hope it can bring back the nostalgia of my childhood where all I did was play sonic.

Like the character revamps as well.

Sega sells Relic and will cut 240 jobs across UK studios

GamesIndustry.biz writes: "Relic is best known for the Company of Heroes and Dawn of War games, and recently developed the new Age of Empires for Microsoft. Relic will transition to an independent studio and will no-longer be part of the Sega group of studios.

The majority of the 240 job cuts are across Creative Assembly and Sega Europe, while there will be a ‘small number’ cut from Sega HARDLight. There was no mention of other Sega UK studios, including Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive."

Shame about Creative Assembly, they should have just been allowed to do an Alien Isolation sequel.

just_looken27d ago

It was that garbage coh 3 that did them in only a special team can make a sequel worse in every way even though it was a 10 year gap and the same era.

gold_drake28d ago

I hope they find new jobs in the industry soon.

Jingsing27d ago

Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive probably run on a shoe string budget so that fits into SEGA better lol

SEGA’s Switch Predecessor: What Happened to the Nomad?

Sega had such a turbulent existence from the mid-90s to when they dropped out of console manufacturing entirely in 2001, it’s understandable if you’ve never heard of the Genesis Nomad.
