Ghosts No. 1 Best Selling Title On Next-Gen, Destiny To Be “Next Billion Dollar Franchise”

MP1st - For the publishing company’s fourth quarter, Activision announces Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts as the No. 1 best selling title in aggregate across all platforms in the U.S. and Europe combined and No. 1 best selling title on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Call of duty is the biggest scam since religion

TomShoe3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

Ghosts is the only game I've ever played where I felt like I wasted my $60.

And I've played a LOT of bad games. At least the other games are fun. I don't have fun in Ghosts at all, not compared to Black Ops II. Playing Ghosts just feels like a grind to me.

dcj05243724d ago

Cod was fun and it climaxed at black ops. Then it went all down hill the past 3 years.

" Billion Dollar Franchise" doesn't mean anything to me.

Larger companies are inefficient with their money.

Other dev's could make 4-5 solid quality games for what they spend on each COD game.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt3724d ago

activation got lucky landing bungie they gonna have a lot of money between

Destiny and Call of Duty.

Soldierone3724d ago

They didn't screw up Destiny and kept it from going exclusive, which means they have the upper hand in the next battle. Titanfall being exclusive to one console hurts its chances of becoming mainstream, and besides that game EA really has nothing to compete with Destiny.

Only studio that really stands a chance of stepping in Destiny's way, in my opinion, is Ubisoft with Rainbow Six or one of their other Tom Clancy titles.

Mr_cheese3724d ago

For ubisoft, it may well be the division

Necro_5593724d ago

Um Halo is like the 2nd most popular and highest selling shooter in history and its exclusive. I mean Halo 4 i believe made like 500 million in 24 hours. Activision obviously swooped up Bungies next titles because they think it will be the next Halo. Which i doubt.

Soldierone3724d ago

There is a difference.

Halo was exclusive from the ground up, lots of hype, and didn't have a lot of competition from other exclusives. Microsoft also utilizes Halo as a "flagship" title, along with being a mascot of the console.

Titanfall (while they won't admit it) is a timed exclusive battling Destiny for attention among other exclusives (Halo this year), that ticked off a lot of people by abandoning a third of their fans.

Only way Titanfall becomes massive like Halo or COD is if its truly groundbreaking in some way.

mhunterjr3724d ago

Kind of like how gta, metal gear, final fantasy, mass effect, and bioshock couldn't become mainstream due to temporary exclusivity....

Hicken3724d ago

Different era for GTA, Metal Gear and Final Fantasy(they were also massive sellers on the best selling consoles of their generations). Mass Effect and Bioshock saw pretty good success, but didn't become "mainstream" until their later entries, which were multiplat.

mhunterjr3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

@Hicken

Titanfall will also likely be a massive seller..and compared to MGS, FF, and GTA, it's PC availability will give it even more potential exposure.

Like Bioshock and ME, the franchise will be going to more consoles later.

... So really it already meets your criteria. The notion that titanfall won't be 'mainstream' is simply ridiculous.

mediate-this3724d ago

Halo, gears, uncharted, gt all are proof they dont need multi consoles. TF will be aassive success, everyone talks about it, the true definition of hype. Gameplay day one, not a few screenshots and told its going to be good off the screenshots.

Yeah it would have been great for ps4 cause it definitely would have out performed the xbox one version. But glad i have both.

They need to stop bragging about the cod franchise cos Its badly in need of an overhaul. I dont see them repeating this level of sucess though. They really messed up with this one and a lot of cod fans dropped out.

annus3724d ago

Ah yes, they should stop bragging about being one of the top selling games consistently each year for how long now? You should go teach them some real business strategies, what they are doing clearly isn't working!

And every single year the CoD fans say the same crap. They bitch about how the last one sucked, and that they won't buy the new one. You know what happens? They go and buy the new one.

Darkfist3724d ago

so it means that i have to skip Destiny until number 3 is released

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter325d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell324d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig325d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast325d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g325d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka325d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai476d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface475d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard473d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
