SEGA planning new game around Sonic Boom, first look at new Sonic and Knuckles designs

SEGA’s Sonic press event is taking place as we speak, and one member of the press was kind enough to share a few tidbits from the presentation.

Why base it around a TV show for kids ages 8 - 11, it means the games are going to feel like that.

As I've said before I'd rather they reboot it and do it as an origin story with the Freedom Fighters. Have a darker tone for the game, too many Sonic games over the years have gotten cheesy.

They shouldn't of mentioned the age rating for the TV show because now they are basically admitting, yeah it's going to child like. If Mario can appeal to all ages why can't they do the same to Sonic.

Knuckles looks like a tank who is on Steroids and Sonic with his scarf and new hair looks like a pompous douche

Sonic Generations was the only good Sonic game in a long time, and I have no idea why they don't just make something like that again. Wasn't it also the best selling Sonic game in a really long time as well? Everybody loved it and yet they go right back to making garbage...

Yeah same here, Generations was the best game so far the only thing I didn't like was the Modern Sonic levels. Thats why I wouldn't mind a reboot since they could go back to the young Sonic design.

Colours was alright but the wisps put me off, it was pretty cheesy

It feels like SEGA nearly get it right but they always have that one big thing which ruins it. Look at the gimmicks they added to the Secret Rings, Unleashed and The Black Knight. I mean a Sword....in a Sonic game.....COME ON

The best Sonic-design is still the original 'chubby' Sonic, which we saw in Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2.

And that gameplay and level design was also the best.

Sonic 1 and 2 are still absolute classics well worth playing. After that, they just completely lost it somehow. Adding in new moves (like an automatic grab, which took the speed out of the gameplay), and (mostly) lame characters.

It's amazing to me how Sega can't seem to realise that all they have to do is take Sonic 2D games back to that platforming-perfection we saw in Sonic 1 and 2.

And for 3D titles, they should look at the Mario Galaxy games as an example, instead of turning it into some kind of 'rollercoaster' where you've got minimal control over Sonic.

YES. A thousand times, YES. Generations made me care about Sonic again, but it also reminded me why people hate the game. Sonic team should look at Mario 3D world in terms of perspective (a marrying of both 2D and 3D), because wildly switching between a 2D and 3D perspective just doesn't really work for Sonic games.

And I guess Sonic wants to be Nathan Drake for some reason.

Even though it's SEGA, the guys who end up releasing a Sonic game which usually has something wrong with it whether it's gameplay, art style or level design.

If they never made a mistake...fair enough but since they have I think people can fairly judge.

I don't understand why people are upset. Sonic is aiming for a demographic of children. They aren't aiming for teens or adults. I think they made the right choice by going for kids but the wrong choice by going wii U and 3DS exclusive. Their are parents that would buy this for their kids who own a PS4, or Xbox One had they chosen to make it for multi platform.

They give Sonic a scarf... Scruff his hair up to make it look like he has mange... Stretch Knuckles out to 8 feet tall... My Lord. I realize they're going with the look of the new syndicated cartoon, but it feels like with every step forward in the Sonic world, someone slips and falls down a flight of stairs in order to reboot or freshen up the franchise. There were plenty of great aspects to a lot of the recent Sonic games; why not focus on improving upon what fans have enjoyed instead of scrapping everything accomplished once a year?

OMFG Knuckles doesn't even look brawn... he's just a fat derp now. Sonic looks like he took inspiration from Jak from Jak & Daxter... something I should add doesn't make Sonic more original so I don't understand why they're doing this.

You guys are the reason nintendo sticks to their guns. There are like 12 different sonics out there. Sonic 1 and 2 where boring yet had great music. You just can't please you guys unless I guess you are making these games lol. The designs are fine. His name is knuckles he should be big and bad. Sega is trying there best to please you guys. The feed back works better when it makes sense. Fans almost always kill the things they love.

I think I'll be giving this one a try though looks fun.

Why does everything have to have a "darker tone" these days? Can't a game be light-hearted and whimsical and still be every bit as fun? I think the Mario games continue to support this. Definitely give Sonic "attitude" but the original Sonic games were NEVER "dark."

Wow some major sonic haters here. I love the new designs and the style of the game. It looks like Sonic Heroes 2. Sonic was never geared for an older audience so the age target isn't a surprise to me. The only disappointment is that the game isn't a multi-platform for all Next Gen consoles.
