Senior publishing source confirms new, cheaper Xbox One release for 2014

Microsoft will release a cheaper Xbox One this year, a well-respected source has told VG247, apparently confirming this week’s leaks out of Redmond.

PS4 is still more powerful and by the time this price cut hits it has probably lots of first party exclusives announced ...would people want the X1 in such a scenario? As long as its near the holiday 2014 I don't mind that I paid $600 for my bundle. My current games are just to hold me over as I stand by for Titanfall. As far as you all talking about Kinect, all I ask is that you not base it off of the kinect for the 360. Kinect is easily the second most important aspect of an Xb1. Talking to your system is pretty amazing and a great way to show off when you have company. Don't be so quick to down the Kinect, do you notice how you don't ever really hear XB1 gamers complaining about it.

If they removed Kinect and reduced the price I would certainly consider buying an Xbox One sooner rather than later down the line.

If they remove the disc drive, that's the worst 'value' I could imagine. Leaving you at the complete mercy of Microsoft and their publishers for the pricing of games and content digitally.

Microsoft can afford to loose money BUT the Xbox gaming division cannot. Investors have been clamoring for reasons to cut the Xbox brand loose from Microsoft because they don't believe the investment is worth what it has cost so far.

Without Microsoft's money coffers as a safety net the Xbox brand would quickly wither and die.

For what it's worth I do not own one DVD or BLU RAY movie and nor do I ever rent them. Can't tell you the last time I bought a used game. I use patience and wait for price drops and if it is must have I will pick up day one. And must haves for me are, at best, 2-3 games a year. So it isn't all that funny!

Explain why it's shitty? I doubt you've even used it. I'll be the first to admit, I didn't want the Kinect because I never thought I'd use it. I figured I'd just hide it away and when someone broke theirs I could sell mine, put it on eBay, something like that. But the more I use it, the more I like it. Not having to wear a headset for online gaming, awesome picture quality on Skype, not having to go to the dashboard to setup a party, being able to unsnap apps without having to manually go in and do it via controller. That's just a couple things I use it for.

They will release an Xbox One with a SOUND BAR, minus the Kinnect Camera. That will cut the price of the system down to close to $400 dollars. Pretty smart of them. The most used feature of the Kinnect is the voice commands anyway. Though I like the fact that my console recognizes me when I come into the room and logs me in. It's so easy to use voice to navigate, I rarely use hand gestures...Though when on the internet, hand gestures work great. I prefer having both, but the new SOUND BAR will keep kinnects best features at a cheaper price.

Seriously... why? Why should people be forced to pay extra for something they may not want, need, or ever use? If I had an XB1, the Kinect would still be in the consoles box and I would never consider using it for a second. Not only because I wouldn't want MS, the NSA, or a clever hacker having a birds eye view of me and my home anytime they please. But secondly, I find the concept of talking and giving commands to an inanimate device absolutely asinine. Plus it gives MS an excuse to have a crappy UI since the voice commands can be used to navigate quicker.

But here's the worst part of it, if MS does as these people say, and they make sure every console is sold with a Kinect, then what does that mean? Perhaps devs will start using it and incorporating crucial gameplay features to it... which also means that for those people who refuse to use the Kinect, will be FORCED to use it in order to play certain games.

Making Kinect as critical to playing a game as a controller is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard. And I feel bad for those who don't want to use Kinect but are forced to when they play their favorite game because it is REQUIRED to actually play the game.

Yeah but sorry, Kinect needs to be OPTIONAL in every aspect, including in games that may utilize it for certain features. This is good because if devs make some really neat strides in a game that uses Kinect, people can buy one if they want to ENHANCE their experience. But if somebody doesn't care about enhancements, they should still be able to play the game without it and have no loss of function.

Forcing Kinect with every console gives devs the idea that they can incorporate features that require Kinect because they know everybody has one, and if you don't want to use Kinect, you will be absolutely screwed.

MS would be making a huge mistake if they don't offer a Kinect-less version.

Halo CE AE was ruined though because of the fact they just added mp maps for Halo Reach. They done that in fear of Reach population dropping. The console had already been out in other regions for five months as it launched on the 23rd of March in the UK, which means it took a year for a price cut on the dead 20gig model.

If I'm not mistaken, the PS3 got a 200€ price drop in the first year or so. It's pretty normal if a console is not selling as well as the developer expects.

As for the X1, I don't think it's selling that well outside the USA/UK markets. I expect a price drop on the X1 sooner or later (in the first year). Ideally for them would be a Kinectless X1 for 350€.

Oh get over yourself the system is priced perfectly fine as long as you are a huge fan of Kinect (which is not cheap) and take advantage of its TV functionality something a family could take advantage of in a living room. The system does more than the PS4 and that is a fact.

I was an Xbox fan ID KMJFNIGUY. Had original Xbox & 360. Got raid of my 360 when MS stop making games that I want to play for my 360 (my disc drive broke and would not open)and plus PS3 online was free at the time.

Side note: For all the people who are proclaiming that Xbox One is the definitive all purpose entertainment device is funny.

Because the PS3 did everything the Xbox One does today except for the ability to attach a HDMI device to it. And the PS3 did it better imo.

The Xbone has a Kinect that is $100-$150 and is not really required. The PS4 does not come with an add on like that. The Xbone would technically be sold for around the same price while the PS4 would literally have to be sold at a lower price because nothing can be left out of the package. Whoever disagrees with this has some serious problems because what I say is true.

Learn what barebones is, "basic elements or essentials". The PS4 can be called barebones because all it includes is everything needed to work while the Xbone has the extra Kinect. Thus, the Xbone can ditch the none essential in maybe a different package and still sell for same price it is worth, while the PS4 cant eliminate any extras without actually lowering the cost of the system.

There is no difference between buying a PSN or XBLA game digitally and a full retail game digitally. In both scenarios you are not limited on playing the game.

I think releasing a kinect-less system kills the integrity of the xboxone. When PS3 was going through the same growing pains they didn't eliminate blu ray , they just made a cheaper hardware a few months after the system's release, but of course the hypocrites will judge MS harshly and make it sound like they are desperate.

The ones calling for Kinect are the ones who haven't spent anytime with it to really know what they are missing out on. I have enjoyed it this is not to say they won't make an sku with out it, but the ones calling for it have little to no time spent with kinect and don't plan on buying it anyway

Games like project Spark, Kinect Sports D3, head tracking, and voice commands for future games coming make me appreciate a different experience then the norm controller only input. Also, the added things they can do with Kinect are exciting too. Fear and difficulty based upon bpms and facial expressions.

Sony decided to play it safe this time around, and that's fine. All MS has to do is introduce the games and slowly people will gravitate to xboxone. I see MS picking up steam once the hype of Sony is done

what gimmicks does the kinect offer that are being praised on the PS4? If anything is being praised its the fact that the PS4 camera is optional to buy. There may be games and UI features that take advantage of Kinect, but none of them are mandatory or neccessary. Why require everyone to buy a Kinect when not everyone cares to play Kinect Sports Rivals, use Skype, or use voice to navigate the UI? There is no intelligent or logical argument to require Kinect be sold in every box.

it's voice controls are, but since Sony doesn't market the device you wouldn't know that, would you? This is the point I am trying to make Sony is playing it safe. Rumble isn't mandatory, but it adds to the emersion. Same as kinect, it adds to the emersion, and just like rumble can be turned off but you lose out on the emersion. games like Just dance, project spark, d3, and others add a different level of gaming when used with Kinect.

Your biggest issue isn't Kinect its the fact you have to pay 100 dollars extra for it, but the xbox1 does more than the ps4 hard to believe I know. If you don't like Kinect sports don't buy it, as simple as that. I bet if xboxone was 299.99 you'd get it with no issues what so ever. You clearly haven't spent a significant amount of time with the X1 or Kinect because if u had you would see the value in Kinect along with the X1. Ans since when does more power equal fun? Again IMO mostly those who own a X1 see the value in Kinect. I have tons of friends who actually OWN the X1 and none of them cared about the price or had a major issue with Kinect. When you actually own it or spend a great deal of time with it then u can judge it until then your "no value" argument is null and void.

what? How can you question the value of something with no experience on it? You don't own one, and i'm sure you haven't used it long enough to form any kind of valid opinion of it. Those who have spent the time have nothing but praise for it with little frustration, I know I haven't used a remote in months and enjoy the emersion brought with it.

hell the specs for a ps2 wasn't better than xbox, but I'm sure you found a reason why not to buy an xbox clearly it was the more powerful

yes I would buy a computer with a weaker graphics card.. if it does more, then hell yeah! I own a apple laptop I paid 1000 dollars for and the graphic card sucks, but I can do more on it than I could buying a cheaper computer with a powerful graphic card.

wrong...I would buy one without Kinect at a $100 lower price point. Have owned original Xbox and 360 but have no interest in Kinect and will not buy into it. It's already optional to unplug so why not make it optional to buy

because there are games that take advantage of it like project spark, d3,
kinect sports, just dance, etc voice control to navigate the screen and to snap tv and other apps. Its optional to unplug because
a small group of people complained about being spied on. those same people weren't planning on getting it anyway. You already have a system that caters to you so enjoy that one.

Well I honestly believe there goes Sony's advantage, gaming has not changed much from last gen and I still think the console with the better network and online capabilities as well as games will do best. I am a PS gamer always have and always will be because I just enjoy PS exclusives more, but the Xbox will have Titanfall, Halo 5, and now Gears to carry into battle against what, Killzone? Yeah, things won't change much in terms of where people will be gaming online. I don't know how anyone can think MS won't see a huge spike in sales once this new console drops as well as games like Titanfall, Halo and Gears. But I will say this, this war is just getting started and we have no idea what Sony has up it's sleeves, it is the place to play if you value diverse exclusives IMO, and they are doing some interesting stuff with PSNow and a VR headset, but I really think they need to pull the curtain on some of their first party projects.

From my game buying experience this will not end up cheaper if they remove the drive to digital only.

Everyone knows online game prices are more expensive atleast in EU so you saved a little in the console then over time spend much more in games.

Also, does anyone else get the feeling this is a different way to persuade xbox user base into online only and their DRM idealism that gamers rejected but MS have experessed they would like to return. Bringing diskless so early in their cycle by the end they hope to of made drm a reality through sheer user numbers.

I'l take a cheaper X1 without a Blu-ray drive, already have a PS4 with one and another in the bedroom, cert don't really need another.

Dropping Kinect would be my preference but if this way matches the PS4 price then it's all gravy, only thing is this surely must proper piss off the loyal early adopters.

If keeping Kinect then surely make it white along with the console,which looks much sexier than the black model imo.
