Opinion: Apart from the screen, is PS Vita Slim the ‘better’ version?

Sony has just announced that the ‘2000’ version of their handheld PS Vita is finally coming to the West. Previously exclusive to Japan, the UK retailers are now taking pre-orders for the ‘Slim’ model, which will be released this February (US release details are yet to be announced). Not everyone will agree on its £180 ($300) price tag, and the fact that the system will only come in Black.

I love the OLED, but I see nothing wrong with the new Vita. For starters, it doesn't have the glossy front. Mine gets COVERED with fingerprints and smudge. I have to windex it on a daily basis.

It really depends.

If you're a first time Vita buyer, get the slim.

If you can't live without dat OLED, keep it.

The OLED screen on the PS Vita is noticeably better than the screen on the PS Vita Slim but the PS Vita Slims screen does not look nearly as bad as the completely smudged and dirty screen he is showing in the video. The PS Vita Original is almost completely clean where the PS Vita Slim side is completely smudged from top to bottom, so much so that it seems deliberate. A completely smudged screen like the one in the video can easily make the picture it produces look washed out and blurry.

If it was not deliberate, clean the screen and re do the video so there's not discrepancy.

The Led screen on the PS Vita Slim is still pretty good and if you didn't put them side by side you would think the PS Vita slims screen looked pretty damn good. Plus there are many advantages over the PS Vita original, longer battery life, lighter and slimmer among other things. You would not be unhappy with the New PS Vita Slim unless you have to have the absolute very best screen that is offered by the original PS Vita.

Apart from the screen, there really isn't much difference.

I think the original looks like a more expensive product, where as the 2,000 version looks plasticy, but that doesn't exactly make the system better or worse. The memory is great for holding saves, though you would need a memory card for almost any online purchase or to hold a few updates. The reduced size is nice, but that will vary from person to person. I like electronics being a little beefier and again, this doesn't really make the system better or world.

All things considered, the only reason to not find a 1,000, is if you aren't interested in the Vita at the moment or can find the 2,000 for a lot less.

It is rather large for a portable. It's not something you can put in your pocket, though I have a 3DS XL too and that's not a pocket system either. Vita has a big screen, though.

I swear, these handhelds are getting bigger every generation. Soon, they're gonna be bigger than the original Game Boy.

It actually fits in my pocket, but I always have my cell phone in one and my wallet in the other. I don't want to force the sticks or risk scratching the screen though. And most of the games are not really for 5-10 min bursts... they are more immersive, not really portable ones.

That's why I would prefer a Vita more like the Nvidia Shield, bulkier, more comfortable and with all buttons. I really miss the L2/R2,L3/3
It's four button less! And often not well mapped on the rear and front touchpad.

i know it would compliment my ps4 very well with being able to stream ps4 games to it but are the games really that good? or would i be better off sitcking to my console games on the big screen?

ive not owned a handheld since the gameboy O.O so may end up being a waste of money in my case :/

One important thing the vita 2000 has above the vita 1000, a better battery life which IMO sounds like the push for me IF my OG vita dies.

Battery life and design are swaying me, but not until my original dies... And if ever it does, I'll probs end up opting for an older, cheaper version w/ a better screen... I mainly use mine for @home play anyway + short trips of 2-3 hrs, so batterylife is not hat much of an issue.

Yeah, I've had my phat since launch, and don't often play for sessions long enough to drain the battery completely.

I would complain at some longer life though.

replacing the propietary charger port with a standard micro usb port is nice and all but not enough to convince me to upgrade.... now if they had changed the propietary memory card slot for a standard sd card slot.... that would have been a killer feature

I'll be getting one, it looks "sleek" not "plasticy" imo.
The Slim has a warmer display, while the OLED has a cooler display, from the looks of pictures anyway.

the same thing that happened to the psp is happening now with the vita, the new vita will be made with some cheap ass materials to make it slim and drop the manufacturing costs, guaranteed a psvita release version will stand a fall of 6 feet with some scratches while the cheap version(aka slim) will desintegrate or receive deep damage.

i have a vita right now and it has withstand some harsh situations, i also had a psp 1000 and a psp 3000 accidentaly dropped the 1000 from 6 feet and it only got a dent, while the psp 3000 later on dropped it by accident from like 2 feet and the UMD door slot came off '-'

also compare the psp 1000 to the later versions, the psp 1000 has metal and stuff inside that make it alot more durable....

The majority of your reply concerns whether or not it will survive a fall as well as the original. I will never drop my PS Vita, so the answer to that is a bit irrelevant to me. To you though, this aspect may be very important. What's good for me may not necessarily be what's good for you.

As far as my original response to "Apart from the screen, is the ps vita slim the better version?" I retain that it is indeed the better version, and here's why:

1.) Lighter weight
2.) Better battery life
3.) More ergonomic
4.) Better buttons

I own a PS Vita PCH-2000 (Slim), and I love it. You may decide that it feels cheaper, or infer that it will be made of less "premium" materials, but have you held one yourself? If not, then you're going on pure speculation.

From my personal experience on owning both models the slim is better in every way apart from the screen. The new lcd is good may be better for other peoples tastes for instance when playinf SFxTekken on Amoled the characters skin tones are super orange and colours a bit too much but on the slim's screen the skins tones and colours are normal and the same as what you see when you play the ps3 on the HDTV. For most games it doesnt matter. Only a few that stand out better on Amoled is killzone, Rayman Origins and Legends, Muramasa and blazeblue, and thats out of the 53 Vita games ive got. There does appear to be a slight motion 'blur' but becomes unnoticable after 15 mins. The longer battery life is great and the grip on the slim is miles better probably the best designed handheld ive got to grips with and after a day i dont miss the AMoled at all. Ive still kept it because ive got a US and UK accounts and have tons of games on both but the old vita does Feel super chunky everytime i go back to it same feeling as old psp vs psp 2000. Ive had my slim model since november

The portable Vita battery charger gets you a full charge and you can play while it's charging. So in that way it it's really two full charges of playtime. It's $25 on Amazon... prepare to be very pleased.

The slim definitely seems better, but the OLED also justifies not upgrading. I dont know about you guys but that OLED kicks the crap out of everything, I swear when I play killzone on the vita I have to shade my eyes when the HDR kicks into high gear.
