Last Gen vs. Next Gen: Gears of War Judgment vs. The Order 1886

Karam Elahi writes: "In our sixth round of Last Gen vs. Next Gen Graphics, we compare screenshots from 2 third-person shooters against each other. From the Xbox 360 side we bring in Gears of War: Judgment, the latest iteration of the highly acclaimed (and much-loved) Gears of War series, and from the next gen category, we bring in The Order: 1886, an exclusive PlayStation 4 title being developed by Ready at Dawn and SCE Santa Monica Studios."

Is this really necessary? The Order no contest.

Tapioca Cold3738d ago

All you fools above: the order hasnt even been releases yet. We all know screens are not accurate representations of final product. Seriously, cant people just think logically on this site?

Do i want this game to be awrsome? Yes. Is it going to BE awesome? Obviously we dont know.

ABizzel13738d ago

@tapioca

You're the one wrong here. Game Informer stated that the order looks as good as it did int trailer running on ps4 hardware, and was one of the best looking games they've ever seen on pc and console.

The point of these screenshots are to compare past gen to current gen. Only the last 4 Gears shots are gameplay, and if Game Informer is to be believed then that's what The Order looks like in game, and The Order looks.significantly better as it should since it's running on vastly better hardware.

u got owned3738d ago

@Tapioca Cold

If you think a last gen game will compete with The Order you are the one kidding yourself.

BTW this is the game i'm waiting for PS4.

chrissx3738d ago

Gears of war judgement was a very fatigued game and the worst in the series, however the order 1886 feels and looks like a fresh game with a new setting and concept. There's only 1 winner here

FamilyGuy3737d ago

The Order makes me think of:

Van Helsing
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman
Hellboy
That new tv show Dracula

and I freakin LOVE IT!
Can't wait to see more and play this game.

TheKayle13738d ago (Edited 3738d ago )

taking in consideration the difference in art style oh well very close

ABizzel13738d ago

Not close at all. Only the last 4 Gears are from straight gameplay, and according to Game Informer the Order looks just like that, several months ago.

There is a clear winner here.

TheKayle13738d ago (Edited 3738d ago )

im talking about graphics..and polygons...well in textures and lightin clearly win the order

dont care talking about gameplay of a game that we dont know pretty much nothing and could be fantastic as horrible

MRMagoo1233738d ago

So you say "taking in consideration the difference in art style oh well very close" then say "dont care talking about gameplay of a game that we dont know pretty much nothing and could be fantastic as horrible" ...........makes me wonder if you dont just have random ppl use your account or have split personalities.

OT there is one clear winner and the order is obviously the better looking game, i didnt think it would be otherwise.

MadSientist893738d ago

GEARS 1 was an awesome game, 2 and 3 sucked.. I'm hoping Gears of war next is alot like the first game.

georgeenoob3738d ago

Gears 2 sucked but Gears 3 did NOT suck and is definitely the best gears. Stop "guessing" that it sucked cause you obviously never played it. It improved everything Gears did wrong from the first two.

InTheLab3738d ago

Gears 3 is not even close to the original. It's not aweful like Gears 2 but it is nowhere near as good as the first.

Salooh3738d ago

I'm with MadSientist89. Bigger game =/= better game. Gears 1 was perfect for me. I love it. Even if i get back to play it right now i will still enjoy it like before and that doesn't happen in many games. It's a gameplay masterpiece. I'm not interested in the new gears at all because i know it won't reach it's level after all these downgraded sequels..

MRMagoo1233738d ago

guys you cant agree with MadSientist89, he said something negative about an xbox game so he is an obvious fanboy and now you inthelab and 14febR at also going to be forever labeled as such too, at least in georgenoobs eyes and a few others. Ih and you also have more bubbles than him so that means you are sony fanboys too , hence why i have sooooo many comment bubbles too /s

DigitalRaptor3737d ago

In the same way that Uncharted 2 is better than Uncharted 3, Gears 1 is better than its sequels.

MadSientist893737d ago (Edited 3737d ago )

lol yup the sawed off improved everything right ;)

Volkama3737d ago (Edited 3737d ago )

Gears 1 was my favourite too. I did enjoy the others as well though, it's been a good series.

Gears 1 was confined and tactical. With the exception of the sniper rifle it was tuned so that you had to out-maneuver and flank the locust.

Gears 2 went for size and cinematic spectacle. It was grand, but the gameplay devolved into "stop and pop". Like pretty much every other cover-based shooter.

Gears 3 continued the trend from 2, all spectacle. It did a better job of it. Gameplay was stop and pop again.

Gears 3 had the best multiplayer of them.

Gears Judgement I haven't played, so can't comment.

I don't understand why Gears and the order are being compared, all they share is that they a TPS's. The setting and views are completely different. The order is much more serious that a over the top sci fi shooter. stop the comparisons.

The Order: 1886 pushed visuals hard in 2015 - And still looks stunning today

Digital Foundry : Released in February 2015, The Order: 1886 was a stunning PlayStation 4 game at the cutting-edge of rendering technology, with visuals that still hold up today. The game's release pre-dated in-depth Digital Foundry coverage, something we're looking to address with this new video! Ready at Dawn's game never received a sequel and never received a PS4 Pro upgrade, but thanks to developments with exploited, older firmware PS5 consoles, we can now show you the game running locked at 60 frames per second.

The gameplay was bland and extremely frustrating at times with unnecessary QTE combat at points. But the world and the lore and the characters and the story were fantastic. I’ve always wanted a sequel. I still hope Sony will surprise us one day.

shadowT258d ago

Sony missed the opportunity to acquire Ready at Dawn Studios.

Tacoboto258d ago

But... Sony didn't want Ready at Dawn. Clearly

mkis007257d ago

I'm guessing had 1886 turned out more positively they would have.

RaidenBlack258d ago

And let's not forget,
Ready At Dawn showcased The Order 1886 running on PC at 60fps at SIGGRAPH 2015

isarai258d ago

I still stand by my theory that this game just released at the wrong time. Almost every outlet spent a lot of time in their reviews ragging on the game for not being an online experience, everyone was in the Destiny hype train and at the time they wanted EVERY game to follow suit, bashing any game that didn't. If this were released after everyone realized how much that wasn't future, people would've appreciated it more. I loved it, and I'm always disappointed that we'll never get a sequel

Tacoboto258d ago

That doesn't seem to be true about outlets complaining on the lack of online. The review summaries on Metacritic are very consistent: Amazing graphics, but shallow gameplay and a very short length with little reason to return.

Here's an example of how *little* time IGN spent talking about multiplayer:

"With no multiplayer, and no reason to revisit the short and stunted single-player campaign once it’s been completed, there just isn’t a lot to it."

It's the final sentence. They don't even take the time to say "online multiplayer"

MrChow666257d ago (Edited 257d ago )

"Amazing graphics, but shallow gameplay and a very short length with little reason to return."
You are right, that's what everbody was saying at the time, never heard anything about it not being online.
I've been thinking about trying this game for years, I may get it now that it's dirt cheap, no big loss if it sucks

MrChow666257d ago

Oh, add to that bad enemy AI, I remember that from the reviews, I saw a video of a wherewolf boss fight with a very weak AI

thorstein257d ago

And there we glowing reviews for shorter games. It was one of the times where hating this game was "cool."

CrimsonWing69258d ago

Can you show me the reviews that rag on it for not having an online experience?

I’m not doubting you or anything. I’m just being lazy.

isarai258d ago

Sorry, not multiplayer, open world is what I meant.

Tacoboto258d ago

That's also fake news, isarai. Again, the game was consistently criticized for what it was (Pretty but extremely short, extremely linear, hand-holding, no replayability), not for what it wasn't (multiplayer/open-world)

isarai258d ago

Nope, every review uses the term "linear" several times as if it's some inherently bad attribute. Not fake news at all. Since then there's veen plenty of short and sweet single player linear games that get lots of praise, again after the reality of everything being open world set it and it wasn't as great as everyone thought. But at the launch of the last gen everyone had open world fever, and especially the first couple years "linear" was a con in many games reviewed

Tacoboto258d ago

That's your own contortion assuming criticism of its extremely linear design is suddenly a call for it to have been open world.

zumlauf14257d ago

You totally made up a claim regarding an overall review consensus that isn't true. And, instead of just ignoring being called out for it, you respond with "oh actually i ment to say OPEN WORLD". Which literally isn't true either. You can't show us one review that bashed the game for "not being open world". And, somehow the other guy is getting downvoted. Over a bullshit liar.

isarai257d ago

Games were being criticized at that time for any game that wasn't open world or online. So yeah I got one mixed for the other, doesn't change my argument one bit that it would've been received better if it released later. People are agreeing because if you were not riding the "online and open world" hype train at that time, it was blatantly obvious there were biases in play for how games were criticized. Now after all that has happened since people want to say "oh wait these games were actually pretty good" cause they know better now

Rude-ro257d ago

The gameplay was very shallow and when one says repetitive, it is by the very definition for some fights. As in, completely identical but different setting.

The game has amazing potential.
The graphics, the lore, characters…
This could most definitely have been all corrected with a sequel and became a franchise hit…
Still would love to see an attempt.

Ie fantastic premise and moments that shine…
But it had its downfalls that deserved the negative marks.

thorstein257d ago

It was the "game to hate" when it launched. And right here, on this site, we saw people posting stories that were outright fabrications about the game. It was weird. The game launched, it was fun, a really cool game but the hate was too much. And so were the lies.

Minute Man 721257d ago

It was just too short....but I loved every minute of it....double dipped and grabbed the ultimate CE

babadivad257d ago

That isn't true. I remember people talking about how incredibly short it was and the somewhat janky gunplay.

KwietStorm_BLM257d ago

First I'm hearing of this. I don't know what multiplayer has to do with anything. The game was just dull. Amazing graphics, great narrative, great lore, boring gameplay sprinkled in pieces between cutscenes, and lackluster AI and controls.

anast258d ago

People cried this game was too short. No people are crying because games are too long.

isarai258d ago

Pretty sure everyone is complaining about bloated games lately but ok

anast258d ago

Thank you for the ok. I needed that.

RaidenBlack258d ago

Games like Ubisoft open worlds not enjoyable lengthy games like Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate III

anast257d ago

I get it, but people also complain about the main stories being too long or just games being too long in general because they are "adults".

Gears of War: Judgment - 10 Years of Gears' Most Misunderstood Release

Gears of War: Judgment launched 10 years ago today, and quickly became one of the most misunderstood titles in the series.

ZwVw406d ago

Easily the best control-wise of the series. Judgment introduced melee-ing with the lancer and is still the only installment of the series (to date) which enables you to change weapons while roadie running simultaneously.

Gears 2&5 are the worst controlling in the series.

ocelot07406d ago

It killed the series for me tbh.

Sciurus_vulgaris406d ago

The Arcady aspects of the campaign should have been unlocked after completing a campaign play through. Seeing score screen after battles caused awkward pacing. The multiplayer was too different from other Gears games.

giovonni406d ago

Judgment felt more like an expansion than an actually game. To me, I was fatigued from the series at that point. The story was ok, over all it wasn’t bad.

Ranking The Gears Of War Games From Worst To Best

The Gears of War series has been a consistent deliverer of quality for Xbox, but which games are the best?

KicksnSnares672d ago

Gears of War is my favorite video game franchise, and the Locust is my all-time favorite faction.

My rank list:
1. Gears of War 2
2. Gears of War 3
3. Gears of War 1
4. Gears of War 4
5. Gears of War 5
6. Gears of War Judgment (No Locust in multiplayer was a disgrace)

ChasterMies671d ago

Agree 100% with this ranking. The campaign in Gears of War 2 is among the most fun campaigns ever made. It’s been downhill from there.

Zombieburger638671d ago

I’d say gears 2 and 3 are pretty even. I absolutely loved both of them.

darthv72672d ago

2 is still my favorite but 5 is also up there (for me). Then I'd say 1, 3, 4 and Judgement. Tactics isnt the same type of game, so it seems odd to rank it among TPS when its a strategy game. So I make that one all its own. Pretty fun game too.

Jericho1337671d ago

The first is and has always been the best one imo - the story, the levels, the set pieces, the soundtrack - as close to perfect as a campaign can get.

I’d say the series had been on a continual downhill slide until 5.

Om4ever671d ago

Naaaan ... 2 is the best by far

MadLad671d ago

3
5
2
1
4
Judgement

I love the series as a whole, but 4 was pretty by the numbers, and Judgement was just ok.

LoveSpuds671d ago

I played them all since picking up a Series X about 7 months ago. Personally, I don't think time has been kind to the earlier games and they feel very slow and repetitive to play. Whilst the newer games may be prettier, they stick with the original gameplay mechanics too much in my view so as a whole series of titles, I think they are pretty average games.

Not to say they weren't fun and I have a lot of nostalgia for 1 and 2, I just think there are far better action games out there.
