PS1/PS2 games heading to PlayStation 4

DF: "Backwards compatibility is coming to PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Now is only part of the story. A well-placed source working with Sony's streaming service reveals that only PlayStation 3 titles are currently scheduled to use the "gameplay over IP" cloud service. PS1 and PS2 titles are set to follow the more conventional route of running locally under emulation on Sony's latest console - but with the possibility of HD visual enhancements."

I will with the PlayStation Now beta on its way that is a possibility.

Kayant3740d ago

This is actual BC with local hardware emulation btw with added HD enhancements. Like DF puts it basically it's pcsx2 for PS4.

blitz06233740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

This is great news. It'd be nice if they plan to bring PS3 emulation as well. Helps a lot of people like me who already own PS3 discs.

Rainstorm813740d ago

Sounds good but is it for discs or games in the ps store?

If its for discs this would be huge

Xsilver3740d ago

IF this is True then it will be be a megaton.

pyramidshead3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

I'm more excited about this than PS:N. Mostly because my internet is terrible. Local emulation is something I've been waiting to hear.

Shame the cell is too fancy so that it's not included.

Ron_Danger3740d ago

@blitz

Don't get your hopes up. In order for proper PS3 emulation, the PS4 would need a PS3 cell chip to run PS3 discs. Why not just do the logical thing and play your PS3 games on your PS3? That's what I still do. I've been switching back and forth between Killzone on PS4 and Puppeteer on PS3.

Pricey3740d ago

Blitz i cant see ps3 emulation on ps4. We know it will be streamed though.

Two reasons why are the architecture is vastly different from the ps4 and the power of the ps4 whilst impressive will not be enough to mitigate said architecture differences.

However role on streaming.

M-M3740d ago

@blitz0623

I would love PS3 emulation on the PS4, but that's possibly dangerous. If they found out how to emulate the cell perfectly on x86 architecture, then people will try to find out how Sony did it and attempt to extract the emulation data from the PS4 for PC emulation. That's what I think would happen at least.

dboyman3740d ago

@blitz0623 Nope unless they plan to carry a PS4 with the Cell. Current ps4 cup is not powerful to emulate Cell effectively. Better keep your ps3 for now...

FamilyGuy3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

Cool, there's no reason a PS4 shouldn't be able to play PS1 games and it's definitely powerful enough for PS2 emulation. I wonder if this is why PS Now has only mentioned PS3 game streaming recently when they initially said they'd be interested in the entire PS legacy.

BattleAxe3740d ago

If this is for the PS Store digital downloads I would be extremely happy, and while backwards compatibility with discs is huge, I don't personally know anyone who has actually kept a collection of old PS1 or PS2 game discs.

brightlight3740d ago

THAT EXPLAINS ALL NOW : http://www.freepatentsonlin...
"A method and apparatus for adding trophy support games that do not have trophies without modifying the original game. The method and apparatus are used to detect particular disk access, use the detected disk access as potential trophy triggers in games, and recognize the triggers while a game is played. Trophies are awarded based on the triggers, and the awarded trophies are stored."

UltimateMaster3740d ago

Hopefully, it'll let me play my PS2 discs.

Information Minister3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

Backwards compatibility means being able to use your old existing software on a new platform. If you're required to buy a new version of the software you already own, then it's just a re-release. And do keep in mind that because of licensing or technical issues, only a selection of PS1/PS2 games will be made available through this method (I'm still waiting for a PSN release of Omega Boost).

That's the way I see things, and if that is the way Sony is planning to do business, then count me out. The HD collections we have now are better than this fake BC.

GribbleGrunger3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

Just a word of warning here guys: This is an article by Leadbetter and I'm not inclined to immediately believe anything he says. It could be true or it could be something I've seen certain journalists usee over the years:

You take a confident user base, feed them extremely positive news (something they've always wanted) and when their expectations are through the roof, you pull the rug from under them. This is how you take positivity and turn it into negativity. Suddenly you have people who were happy with their purchase and have turned them into disappointed consumers.

So just weight that against your hopes and all will be fine.

PLASTICA-MAN3740d ago

i noticed something about the emulator used by Sony on PS3 and PS Vita. I bought the first Silent Hill and the loading screen has Harry Mason running fluidly and normally on a regular PS1 but when yoh use the emulator o. The the next consoles, you get him running in a clusmy way, getting blurry with multiple hims destroying the screen, try it if you have it. i think the emulator on the latest PS consoles is based on the old bleem where I got the same problem whereas with PCX2 you don't get that problem. Bleem doesn't have many features like changing the the res and so while PCX2 has many features. That's why I think the old PS emulator is based on Bleem while the PS4 one is based on the new and better PCX2.

deathtok3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

I see this statement that PS3 can't be emulated because of cell architecture come up a lot but its not accurate.

Emulation is writing software that mimics the instructions of another processor. The cell is complex but Sony custom built this with IBM and have intimate knowledge of what instructions can run natively versus those requiring emulation.

That being said, it's unlikely that they'll invest in delivering this because the PS3 still moves hardware and software units.

cannon88003739d ago

pcsx2 is such a good emulator when you get it working correctly. It makes games look even better than the hd remakes for ps3 and even higher resolutions too!

mechlord3739d ago

haha.
they should hire some of the people that made pcsx2....now that i think of it, wasnt there some patent by sony dealing with adding trophy support to games without modifying them?

It makes sense, because it would add another incentive to replay all those old glories of the past

morganfell3740d ago

Can't wait to run SOCOM.

DragonKnight3740d ago

@morgan: Sony shut down SOCOM servers today for all SOCOM games. So if your excitement is the singleplayer, then cool, otherwise prepare to be disappoint.

morganfell3740d ago

I am very aware of that. That would be necessary in order to run SOCOM titles in MP under this new system.

BattleAxe3740d ago

^^^

Are you aware of H-Hour: World's Elite by David Sears?

morganfell3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

Yes and have spoken privately with them. They are less than an hour from me and I know one of the guys there personally.

BattleAxe3740d ago

Nice, I'm a Kickstarter backer, and I'm really looking forward to H-Hour. I'm confident the project will succeed, especially in light of what Takedown was able to achieve, although not being a very good game from the looks of things.

BattleAxe3739d ago

I've known about Ground Branch for quite some time. I'm kind of unsure about this game. I've never been interested in ARMA because it just doesn't seem fun to me, and I think that Ground Branch might be a similar type of game.

I was a huge huge fan of Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm however, so I have enjoyed a methodical tactical experience in the past. I'll just have to wait and see if the early access interests me enough when it finally comes to Steam.

Ok...I already decided I'm getting a PS4 at some point but this would make that decision even easier.

I've never been a Sony game until I got my psp last year. I've missed out and a ton of great games of the years, especially RPG's.

There are way more PS1/Ps2 games I'd want to play, than PS3 games, as I have a 360 and a decent amount of them are on that.

Looks like Vita + PS4 it is.

Retroman3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

ok, someone plz!! share with me what "Local Emulation" means and is??? take a shot if im wrong someone plz!! explain. local emulation: something can be emulated "reproduced" without physical disc.but with a disc for ps3 backward compatibility gaming???

thanks in advance.

BitbyDeath3740d ago

'Local' meaning on the box. (no internet required)
'Emulation' meaning it can convert the code/language to run on the PS4

Conzul3740d ago

Local Emulation is when the PS4 uses its own power to translate older game code into something that can run WITHOUT older hardware. IE no Emotion chip or Cell.

Which makes it weird that people still think PS3 emulation on PS4 is impossible. Unlikely, but very far from impossible.

rainslacker3739d ago

@Conzul

It's not impossible to emulate the Cell on x86. However, it may not be possible to emulate it at a speed that would be sufficient to run games. You lose a lot of speed during emulation in most cases. The Cell's SPE architecture is a lot different than x86, although newer x86 architecture does borrow a lot from the Cell in terms of hyper-threading. The APU's in the newer consoles actually are what the Cell has become, sans the SPE's. Most of the work that the SPE's were meant to handle on the PS3, are now being offloaded to the GPU in the newer setups.

I do concur with a lot of people that it would be awesome if they get local PS3 emulation working, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I have said on countless occasions though that I don't know why they wouldn't include PS1/2 emulation though before the reveal though. It's already possible on less powerful PC systems.

Joey_Leone3740d ago

This is great news. PS4LIFE

djtek1843740d ago

I have a huge collection of ps1 & 2 Games. This would be one giant leap if the ps4 could play them all.

Tapewurm3740d ago

Have all of my old Socom discs and a few other classics....would be nice if this were true. 8)

If i can't put my PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs into my PS4 and play my games, then it isn't backwards compatibility. i'm not gonna pay for games i already own. An no one give me your bullshit excuse about "should netflix offer you free movies if you own the physical version" because their are other alternatives. i can buy a VCR/DVD/Blu Ray unit and still have access to my back catalog of movies and access all the apps like netflix & Hulu if i chose too. plus last time i checked movies costing 50-60 bucks each game.

GuruMeditation3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

But there ARE alternatives. Just like you could buy a VCR instead of a Netflix subscription, buy the legacy console instead of PSNow.

Aside from that, I agree with your sentiments.

VitaOwner3740d ago

Just because you have to pay for it doesn't mean it isn't a form of backwards compatibility, even if it isn't the most ideal. Also, if you already own a game, don't re-purchase it on PS4.

fenome3740d ago

I kept my backwards compatible ps3 and still have like 2 ps2s, those are my 'other alternatives'. I get what you're saying, but the VCR/DVD thing was a terrible example

Kayant3740d ago

Am not disagreeing with you but there is one difference that doesn't make that comparison work. "Alternatives" There are no alternatives to PS games(excluding multiplats) so the only way you could play them was to have the hardware(or I guess PC to emulate).

Again like it's your choice to pick whether to stream a PS3 game with Playstation Now or to play it locally on hardware like you can choose to stream a movie on netfilx or watch it on your dvd/blu ray player.

The problem is they can't guarantee it's your copy and not a borrowed one for you to just gain access to stream it.

And we still don't really know the pricing and if it will actually be a netfilx model for playstation now. If it's not then I would say if you have a DD version of the game there you should gain access to it for free.

Jubez1873740d ago

Idk when people started feeling entitled to BC. How many consoles out of the 30+ that have ever been released are BC? I think PS2, Wii, and the handful of first generation PS3's that are still alive. That is IT.

"I can buy a VCR/DVD/BLU Ray" and you can buy a PS1 and PS2.....

DryBoneKoopa853740d ago

@Jubez187: The Wii U is BC with your Wii library. Plus all the Nintendo handhelds are BC as well. So there are a lot more then just those few.

I'm a game collector so I own just about every console and a ton of games so BC doesn't mean much to me but I can see why some people would like the convenience of it.

Jubez1873740d ago

@DryBone

I said "consoles" because I know that most handhelds tackle BC pretty well. However, I did forget that the Wii U existed, thanks for adding that.

Prime1573740d ago

@drybone

Initially the ds and ds lite played advanced games until the dsi when they opted to phase out that tech.

Backwards compatibility is something that "technology ignorant" people expect. Sometimes the architecture limits the ability or emulation is difficult to add (here's looking at ps3's cell processor), ESPECIALLY IN CONJUNCTION WITH profitability and affordability on the business side.

Don't get me wrong, I like backwards capability, but I understand the challenges and effects that it causes.

dumahim3740d ago

" i can buy a VCR/DVD/Blu Ray unit and still have access to my back catalog of movies and access all the apps like netflix & Hulu if i chose too."

Yep, just like you can buy the older consoles to play those older games exactly like you'd have to buy a VCR player to play your old VCR tapes. Your VCR tape isn't going to work a DVD/BR player.

Qrphe3740d ago

This, all this is give me hope of one day using a hacked PS4 to run PS2 discs just like any hacked PS3 can now.

Prime1573740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

"because their are other alternatives. i can buy a VCR/DVD/Blu Ray unit and still have access to my back catalog of movies and access all the apps like netflix & Hulu if i chose too."

Rephrasing with my changed words between brackets so you understand your missing something:

"because their are other alternatives. i can buy a [ps1/2/3] unit and still have access to my back catalog of [games] and access all the apps like [PlayStation now] if i chose too."

So, uhm, seriously? YOU MAKE NO SENSE. It is, in essence, the SAME. Streaming is a sign of the time we live in.

ginsunuva3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

Who cares if it isn't "real" BC.
It's better than having nothing.

Since when did people deserve BC as default all the time? Was it some god-given right?

Go learn something about CS or EE then come back and complain.

mt3739d ago

I don't know why people disagreeing with you? it looks like people want to pay for what they already have. I agree with you at least give us an option.

jackanderson19853740d ago

so is it downloadable content or pop the disc in and play content? because big difference there

DeadlyFire3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

The rumor is that you can pop in an old PS1/PS2 disc and run the game on the PS4 hardware. Although nothing is confirmed yet.

Anyone remember that whole article about 2Gb of RAM AKA 256 MB DDR3 tucked away on the PS4 motherboard with 256 MB Flash memory? + an ARM chip. Considering PS1,PS2, PS3 all are using Risc based CPUs just like ARM CPUs. Perhaps BC was planned all along. Likely its harder to build solid emulation that works around for PS3 titles though.
http://www.nextpowerup.com/...

Prime1573740d ago

I thought that was the standby and background downloading chip. It would be cool if they added bc on that..

On a quick note: you might want to change your text to "2gbs" btw, not gb (gigabits vs gigabytes). I know you know as you go on to say 256mb, just saying that the typo might confuse the average person.

Iltapalanyymi3740d ago (Edited 3740d ago )

This is true. I mean, why wouldn't it? Its inevitable anyway.

Fallout 4 is now available on next-gen consoles, but PS Plus users might be left disappointed

Fallout 4 is now available on next-gen consoles, offering 60fps gameplay and 4K resolution. But it's bad news if you claimed the game on PS Plus.

Probably won't happen for PS+ since Sony makes a clear distinction between a PS4 game and a PS5 game, unlike PC and Xbox where it is not a specific device game (It's now always an Xbox game).

So to make the PS5 game of fallout 4 available. Bethesda would need to renegotiate the complete deal with Sony.
hence why there's often only the PS4 version of the game available on PS+.

Let's hope Bethesda and Sony can arrive to term quickly.

P_Bomb2h ago

In that same link, they talked to further support who said PS+ owners aren’t eligible. What a load of BS! The upgrade worked just fine for FF7R. I was looking forward to this. 😞

ChasterMies31m ago

PS5 upgrades for PS4 games on PS+ are hit and miss. The reason is usually that publisher doesn’t want to hand out free upgrades. Sometimes they offer the upgrade upfront, sometimes they are bullied into it, and sometimes they offer it later in a special edition that Sony buys for PS+. It looks here like Bethesda’s intent was to raise the profile of Fallout 4 (and sell some DLC) so I expect we will see an update for PS+ versions soon.

Mr Logic8m ago

Bethesda themselves acknowledged that Plus users are eligible. There is just some kind of glitch and they are working to fix it.

CobraKai4h ago

I think a hard copy should be relatively cheap at this point.

ocelot071h ago

Roughly a fiver for disc. It's also £3.99 on PSN right now for both PS4 and ps5 version.

P_Bomb1h ago

North America sale just ended. The timing for me absolutely blows.

So if I insert my ps4 disc I should get the upgrade?
