Why would someone choose an inferior product that costs more. Considering the Tress-FX which puts down most of the high end PCs, the extra added next-gen effects, lighting and physics, running at native 1920 x 1080 at 60 FPS it is a technical avhievements even for high-end machines ( you can bring your Alienware or Origin quad SLI Titan + 64 gigs of RAM which you can only see in your dreams or fairly tales, we are talking mainstream here, check Steam polls, most of users are stuck with GT 9800 which i used to have before my old HDD was fried). The ps4 is good and this is an a achievement for consoles but it doesn't make it high end. Tomb raided simply isn't a very taxing game, even with TressFX with is basically a tessilation technique made more efficent for consoles hardware

I took a look at your link and what you say is not wrong. However what the Kotaku benchmarks show is crazy. I haven't played TR in a while but it was still installed so I decided to use the benchmark tool included in the game. Settings is Ultra at 1080p with Tress FX off (Does not play well with Nvidia)

What Wizard King says is right. A 670 is considerably more powerful than a 660 ti so it would definitively perform WAY better than what the Kotaku benchmark shows, which I suspect was done pre-patch which had TR crashing a lot on Nvidia hardware.

I don't think anyone's trying to put XB owners down. It's just the HUGE wave a denial pre-launch and even after launch that the PS4 was more powerful than the XBO simply needed to be put to rest, and games (multiplatforms) have finally been showing it and more often since COD and BF4 weren't enough and the blame was on eSRAM. Yes eSRAM is part of the problem because there's only 32MB trying to aid 8GB of DDR3 which isn't going to help, but there's also the problem that the GPU itself is a tier down from the PS4's GPU.

And I agree with @Miku it makes no sense to buy an XBO now (PS4 either really), just wait for a price drop, because the games aren't there, and in the case of the XBO the hardware doesn't justify the price.

I would advise against the Alienware Steam Machine. While it's design is the best IMO, it's hardware will more than likely under-deliever. It's non-upgradable which mean it's likely using a one of NVIDIA's mobile GPU's like it's X51's (more than likely the 645m). You're better off with the other two $500 Steam Machines if that's the case, or waiting since Alienware is releasing a new Steam Machine every year.

I would hardly think 60 days is enough time to see either consoles full potential. It took years for the PS3 to catch up to the Xbox 360. We all knew the eSram was going to be an issue early on.

First we were told the Xbox One could only do 720p. Now that releases are coming in at 1080p, PS4 fans are saying it can't do 1080p @60fps. I guess we will have to wait and see. What is the point of PS4 gamers hammering away with having more power anyway? Does it make Knack or Killzone better games knowing the PS4 has more power? How many duplicate stories are really needed at the top of N4G to get the point across?

This kind of info needs to be pounded into the consumers heads, especially since MS knows no bounds when trying to trick the uneducated console buyers with all their slick advertising, bribes, and other low-life schemes to make the XB1 seem like the king of next-gen. What exclusives? As the owner of a ps3, 360, and ps4, Sony has kept me happy with exclusives throughout the console cycle for ps3 while Microsoft completely fell off the map the last few years for the 360. Sorry, there is no exclusive battle between the two. There is no comparison. I have yet to see one game exclusive for the xbone that would make me want to fork over 500 bucks to microsoft. Titanfall isn't my cup of tea, I'm primarily a single player gamer. Quantum Break looks like it could be interesting, but will it be? Who knows. I certainly don't. let's be straight here. every platforms have their own exclusives regardless of the quantity of it. So MS do have their own exclusives like Halo, Gears, Forza and a couple more. If someone prefer those over what Sony has to offer in terms of their exclusive. There is absolutely nothing wrong about it. So to say if you prefer what Sony is offering from their camp over what MS does with Xbox it is fine too. Taste to games is a subjective matter without right or wrong. I have no issues with Xbox fans that prefer their exclusives over what's available on PS.

From previous gen since I own both 360 and PS3, I personally do not adore Xbox exclusive as much. Personally I take Uncharted, TLOU, GOW, GT over Xbox's offering of Fable, Halo, GEOW, Forza. While now in this new gen where it is a complete reversal at least from launch up till this point of time, PS tend to have more superior version of the game. That is when I find they are completely out of touch with reality. It is fine to be a fan of a platform. I've owned a 360 and an xbox, and I want my account to carry over. All my friends are getting xb1's.

I don't like the ds4 (sticks give me cramps), I prefer the xb1 exclusives too. I also use media as much as I play games, and the xbox is just far better at this (especially when externals are FINALLY supported..).

If I wanted a games console that is designed purely for games, I'd get a pc.

Good choice. The best games are on the xbox one in 2014. If I had a PS4 I'd only buy multiplats as their flagship for the year (infamous) doesn't do it for me.
Titanfall, Quantum Break, Halo, the witcher, fifa 15 and maybe Destiny will be the games I'll buy this year.

lol, but PC has all of that, and cost the same price as an XBO, but more powerful, has most of their exclusives, access to XBL, can accept pretty much any controller (lol at DualShock gives you cramps, stop it) and dominates both consoles when it comes to media. The only thing you're losing is the ability to play with you XBL friends online, because you can still sign-in to XBL on PC.

So while you're trying to troll, you're really doing nothing, but showing the XBO just isn't worth it yet, and it's mainly due to Kinect. If Kinect wasn't in there then the XBO could sell for a solid $379, and be worth the asking price.

The XB1 plays games at lower resolutions, with less graphical elements, at lower framerates, and costs more. Any to all of these can be in effect for each game side by side. Some might have one at a disadvantage. Some might have two. Some already have all three.

Meanwhile it costs $100 more.

That's inferior.

It has an asinine memory setup where the ESRAM will always be a bottleneck that not even tiled resources will fix. It's a small bandaid, nothing more. This isn't something that can be conquered. It can just be managed to be less of a hit, but a hit it will always be. The greater the quality...the bigger the hit. So even as they lessen the hit at current levels of quality, as time goes on and quality goes up, it'll get worse again as the drop will be greater then gains of learning the ESRAM and using tiled resources.

Now that we have reality framed, we can still understand such a situation is true and yet XB1 owners can legitimately enjoy their XB1 more then the PS4 or Wii U or even PC. Thus they can actually legitimately enjoy an inferior product more.

You see your mistake is thinking it's not multiple things and that it's an all or nothing thing.

It's not.

It IS inferior, but legitimately some people will like and enjoy it more. True, if more people knew the truth or were more of an expert or simply more inquisitive this number would go down, but some will never care to learn.

The people who like it even though it is an inferior would be those that prefer XB1 first party exclusives. Or for example has a controller preference.

Now when it comes to non-gaming activities, that too can add to how they like it overall, even though the system is inferior when it comes to gaming.

True it does more then gaming, but so can be said of anything. Right now my cable box, my PC, my cell phone, all do things the XB1 crams into what it does. To me, these things hold no value. To others, they may. But none of this changes the core function of a games console, is gaming.

Some people want to use their voice to control the tv. Sure it's faster and nimbler to use a remote, but some people want that. It definitely has uses when the remote is missing, broken, batteries dead. Overall to me, it doesn't sway me at all. But none of this makes the gaming better.

Some people want snap, and others are just fine with switching inputs. Personally snap wouldn't mean much because I'd much rather switch input to my PC to surf the net. I also have an HDTV about 3-4 feet from my gaming/pc HDTV so I can always watch tv and game at the same time anyways. Again snap doesn't make gaming better. It doesn't raise resolution or frames per second, etc, etc.

So yes, the Xbox One as a gaming machine is quite a bit inferior, but that doesn't mean a certain segment of the population won't like it more. For some people it fits what they want better.

Sony's approach though, has shown that the bigger segment of the population wanted a games console to play games better and cost less, and provided that.

Sadly many game sites and Microsoft PR men tried to obfuscate the truth, which is why when you look around the web there are people shocked by how badly XB1 is being owned in performance with multiplatform games. 1080p vs 720p. Better resolution, better graphics, and better framerate. Any or all of the above.

Which is why even though many are satisfied with their XB1 purchase, many were foolish to believe liars and cronies and are rightly disappointed. Had they been informed truthfully about the performance gap they might have made a different choice, or waited until the price of the XB1 dropped.

Game comparison's like this just bring to light the truth that was hidden from the lay person and they are going to be pissed off and vent. I would just remind those people to remember what console manufacturer and gaming sites hid or downplayed the truth. Then remember that for next next gen. But also remember that every instance is unique so don't be dumb towards the companies that did right by you this time as next gen it may all switch up again

I had all major consoles before it and the Dreamcast but the PS controllers make my hands cramp (I have big hands). I don't not buy the PS4 cause it sucks. The only reason to buy a console are the games in my opinion. Hardware does not matter at all with consoles. Buying a console because of its "superior" hardware just makes no sense, the PS4 could have all the power in the world. It would still not play Mario. Or Forza. If you wanna play Mario/Zelda/DK but go for PS4 because of better hardware you have just wasted alot of money.

There is one small exception: A console that offers gameplay experiences (you enjoy) that aren't possible on PC.
Wether I play multiplat game XY on PC or PS4 does not matter at all. I could even use the DS4 pad on PC. But it is not possible to have an experience like Wonderful 101 or Kinect bla game on PC.

That's why PC+WiiU = win, at least for me. And the PS4 is one of the most boring consoles ever. I can totally understand why a more casual gamer would get one. You have one system that has pretty good visuals for a decent price. But if you care about visuals you go for PC and if you want new and unique gameplay experiences there are better offers.

But the PS4 is the best value in the low and mid range gaming spectrum. There's nothing that offer that same level of value right now. You can build a gaming PC for $500 that's above the XBO, but you can't build a $400 gaming PC that's above the PS4, it takes $600 to do that, on top of that with PS+ you're getting 12 games each year to play.

There's no greater value than the PS4. That doesn't mean the XBO is bad, but right now it's simply not worth it except to the diehard fans. And IMO it's not worth owning either consoles since there aren'e enough games out and lack of backwards compatibility (although PS Now should help Sony on those grounds).

But the PS4 is pushing up to twice as many frames here, and that is significant. What happens when games push the PS4 down to 1080p30? Where does the One version sit? 15fps? 720p?

To compound the issue further it seems the One's upscaler causes noticeable visual issues so dropping the res is more problematic than it should be.

I don't think it's all doom and gloom for the One though. It does have some unique features and potential that can set it apart in a good way. And Crytek pushed outstanding visuals using software upscaling, so I'm optimistic other devs will learn from their techniques.

I'll end up picking a copy up since I missed it on the Xbox360/PS3. This early in the new generations console life cycle, releases like this are common. It's sad to see some of the entitled comments on the internet that are becoming more and more common. People complaining that they should get a free digital upgrade from the previous console versions is not realistic. Then we see all the "not good enough" comments. It's ok to not buy games if they aren't right for you. The internet is a funny place though and it's much easier to hurt the gaming industry than it is to help it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to be a little responsible with what is said and understand what impact our words have on the industry as a whole. The problem I have is that it extends way beyond 1080 vs 720 or 60 fps vs 30 fps.

In each case we are talking about an enormous difference in represented power. (To be honest, though quite a bit more powerful on paper the PS4 is seeing a disproportionate performance edge in most recent games, probably due to ease of programming.)

The frustrating thing is that sure, the games will be fine at 720 or 30 fps (though NOTICEABLY less good), but people act like that's the full story. It isn't.

If todays games run at twice the frames/pixel count, if the trend continues then later in the generation when the machines are pushed to the limit and PS4 can only hang on by it's fingernails at 720 + 30fps, current numbers tell us xb1 likely won't be able to play those games, period (or with SEVERE reductions in quality).

THAT is the story here.

Will improved coding help in the future? My guess is somewhat, but not entirely.

If the game dips below 30 fps and becomes unplayable, that would be very bad. From what we have seen it hits 45 fps and dips to 30 fps when the scene is more active. The PS4 version runs at 60 fps and dips to an undefined fps in the same scenes. I'm not sure how much of an issue this really is. It's nice to make a huge deal to support your team, but unless it impacts game play it's not really relevant.

I have an X1 and i dont plan to buy a PS4 for many years. I do want to say though i am very pleased to see that it was able to get to 1080P on stable 30+ FPS. To me that is very very solid on a game like Tomb Raider that has so much going on, especially with the gameplay i have seen and how much they really did increase the graphics. I am getting the PS4 eventually just for exclusive titles (because i am a gamer) but i am again satisfied that it will run 1080p 30+FPS.

As more tools are released and drivers are updated, the DDR3/eSram configuration will be easier to use. The Xbox One will never be as easy or "powerful" as the PS4, but the differance is much less than people claim.

I've personally always prefered fun to play with over pretty. The overall gaming experience should be what we all look at and not simply resolution and frame rate. Interaction with the game through the console and also interaction with other players adds much more immersion than a couple extra pixels or frames per second.

The reason the developer/publisher is asking full pop on the game is due to the effort they put in to making the game "next gen" for the new consoles. If they increased the visual fidelity, how do you expect to also increase the fps without scaling it somehow? If the game looked identical to the previous versions, then 60fps is a no brainer. Take a look at launch software for the last 30 years. Not many systems peak within 60 days. Properly soon should start in a year or two after launch.

You do realize outside of Kinect they do essentially the same EXACT same thing (The Eye isnt as robust but gives you some of the same experiences)? Most people I know turn off all the Kinect features anyways because overtime you get lazy or you get tired of repeating yourself.

MSFTS problem was they tried to tap into casuals and sell a machine everyone would love ... They tried what Nintendo did with the Wii .. they wanted to grow a demographic by appealing to new customers... The problem with that is they alienated their own base and those casual customers have moved on or started to seek other avenues to game (tablets and phones).

Sony did the right thing and gave developers what they really wanted to make games for. They also bolstered their their exclusives over the years..

The only thing i dislike about XB is infact MS.

But what annoys me the most was the constant slagging off of the PS3 before release(i never owned it) Then while i was making my decision of what to buy. XB were braking down, but poeple were still buying them. I don't buy broken hardware.

As for XB1, i have no hate for it, i just don't care for live tv. Services such as bbciplayer etc, if needed are free on the PS3,PC, phone, or tablet. They are free. There is also an app for live tv for PC and Phone which is free.

It's actually the opposite, they said they were aiming for 30fps, but then when they realized they could do more on both consoles they did. PS4 hits close to 60fps most of the time with dips here and there, where as XB1 hits close to 45 fps with dips here and there. Like square said, anything above 30 is gravy, and that's nice, but for this kind of game doesn't make a huge difference...my hope is that they actually pulled back a little so that the dips are hugely noticeable on either system. I honestly would have preferred a locked 30fps to a fluctuating higher FPS.

1080p and 30fps for One is a more than decent result. Of course the PS4 could be considered better, but in an action game 30fps are more than enough (infact Second Son will run at 30fps and noone is crying). I find very funny that a week ago N4G and the forums were full of comments like "who cares about this game, I can play it on PC for free", and now it is considered the reason to buy a PS4 and not a XBOX ONE.

Yes we could all pay $5,000 for a super computer powered pc, that runs ALL games it 120fps, with ultra hd resolutions....BUT IT STILL WOULDN"T ALTER THE FACT...GAMING ON PC's SUCKS BALLS....And not clean, shaven, young balls, nope...Old mans, extra prune shriveled, overly hairy with poo crusties, balls (I don't know why this makes a difference, as balls are balls & disgusting)...Anyway, point is, point & click, & those GAAAAAAAY arse games that pc nerds spend 24hrs a day on, are the only games that translate well on pc's...

Who wants to sit it front of a 17-22" monitor in there grandma's basement playing pc games when there 40yrs old....or even have to try hooking it up to the tv in the living room, & try getting comfortable.

Fact is, XBOne not being capable of running a last gen handmedown at 60fps is a bit of a shocker...Especially considering it is the more expensive console, out of the 2 being compared.
And people can mention how it took so long for PS3 to catch 360...that is BS, it was only rushed ports that were the problem, a lot of which came out 1yr before the PS3 versions when PS3 launched a yr after, & developing for 360 allowed this extra time to get games optimized, 360 was lead dev console also for many 3rd party titles, so some games were ported to PS3 with as little PS3 specific optimizations made, as that would mean extra dev time, work & money, & the publishers knew they could sell the games ANYWAY. It was also a minority of 3rd party titles that suffered issues on PS3...Just like Sony fanboys will blow some of this stuff out of proportion though, MS fanboys did EXACTLY the same with PS3....so get over it, or don't read the stuff that doesn't stroke you & your consoles ego.
PS4/Wii-U for the win baby...Not sure how the whole Wii-U thing will last on my combo though, may have to switch to PS4/Ouya when Nintendo sink tomorrow, as reports suggest..lol

i saw hebrewhammer playing this last night on playstation live. i have this game for pc through a voucher. i will be picking this up for the ps4. the enhancements make the story of lara that much more immerse.
